Famous Bollywood actress Waheeda Rehman on being asked that what was the base of "Kagaz Ke Phool"? She replies,"In my opinion Guru Dutt was inspired by Judy Garland's "A Star is Born". Though I have never seen the film but he had taken the treatment of the concept and also how Bombay film industry runs, how junior artistes are being treated, how success is given respect and love, and if that person fails his little bit of failure changes him or the others as person he have used the treatment of the film keeping this concept in mind.
On being asked that how much authenticity the film had in it about Bombay she replies," In my opinion it was a lot authentic."
On being asked about what were the real touches she answers," Like whenever Guru Dutt ji used to enter studio everybody used to greet him by doing a salaam. The telephone operator used to look at the watch and say that the boss has arrived. The clock strikes nine and the boss enters. He is so punctual. The whole studio and the workers used to love and respect him so much. The same scene is visioned at the end of the film that he has failed and left the studio. he comes in torn and tattered clothes but nobody notices him. to some limits this is a truth. Its difficult to say it occurs in Bombay industry but the whole world behaves like this. The rising star is always been worshipped and if he fails a little bit the whole world finishes him."
Waheeda was born in a Tamil and Urdu-speaking family in Chengalpattu-Tamil Nadu, India.A year after her dad's death she appeared in a Telegu movie 'Rojulu Marayi'. Her role was as an dancing child artiste. She is proficient in Bharat Natyam. It was here that she was spotted by noted Bollywood actor and film-maker, Guru Dutt, who gave her a lead role in C.I.D. She went on to appear in 5 Guru Dutt classics - Pyaasa, 12 O'Clock, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand. Her pairing with Devanand was very popular and they had 5 blockbusters - C.I.D., Solva Saal, Kala Bazar, Baat Ek Raat Ki and Guide and 2 critically acclaimed but box office flops - Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Prem Pujari. She has acted as a child artiste, a leading lady, then switched to character appearances. She has procured the Best Film Actress Award in 1965 for her role in 'Guide', and then again in 1968 for 'Neel Kamal'.
