Completely agree about danseurs needing appreciation: I grew up when Baryshnikov and Nureyev were active, and would go so far as to say danseur appreciation got a real boost from them - I had a real crush on "Mischa", and was able to watch him live several times. It was exciting. And I caught Nureyev live in Vienna, in what was likely one of his last performances, as Siegfried in "Swan Lake". He couldn't really do much compared to what he had once been able to, but the magnetism was as strong as ever.

I also got a kind of crush on Baryshnikov, though, I never saw him live and I'm too "late born" for this, so I would just rather depend on his recordings...I really wish to see any "big dancer" live, as so far, I never had to chance and would stuck with only recordings from bigger companies...whether London, Paris or Moscow...it must make so a difference...

Wow. I am old! I clicked on this video expecting to hear you talk about Baryshnikov and Nureyev, lol. I didn’t know any of the danseurs that you spoke of today. But I have to say of the ones that you highlighted I kind of lean towards Kimin Kim, too. Of the clips that you showed, he seems to exude so much joy in every passage and leap, and it’s just so enjoyable to watch him. I know I’m five months behind the times here, but I would like to see you give a kind of history of ballet dancers and show where ballet was in the 50s and 60s and where it has evovled into today. Kind of like the way gymnastics has evolved from the 50s till now or ice-skating. Surely something similar has happened in ballet?

I was in London a couple of weeks ago and I watched Nela & Vadim do Don Quixote. I'm still recovering. They did the coolest curtain call by jumping out from behind the curtain. So fun! I'm based in NY, so I'm always looking forward to learn more about the dancers outside NY and outside US. Hopefully once I have enough money I'll travel to see them perform live! But my very biased list: (ONLY listing the dancers whom I've seen in multiple live performances): 1. Daniil Simkin. Obviously!!! There's Gravity. And then, there's Daniil Simkin, who says "F*&^ Gravity! Watch Me Fly!!!" (He was guest principal at ABT so I got the opportunity to see him in live performance) If one day scientist discovered that he is secretly a mutant and his superpower is to manipulate local gravity I wouldn't be surprised at all! 2. Aran Bell. Amaze amaze amaze! Literally if he's performing I've going, and I'm gonna try to buy the best ticket possible and that is how good he is. This summer I saw him in Giselle. I used to say if I'm Giselle I'd seek revenge and kill Albrecht. But when Aran Bell is Albrecht, I was like "yeah understandable, totally understandable, I'd forgive him too"... 3. Chun Wai Chan (Okay I'm probably biased as he's the first and only Chinese principal in NYCB. He is good!) This fall I saw his premiere in Apollo as a little birthday gift for myself. And now I'm 100% convinced that Apollo is a Chinese guy! 4. Jake Roxander (yeah he's corp at ABT but I think based on the performances I've seen, I wonder if ABT will make an exception and skip the soloist level to promote him directly to Principal). This season I saw him in Etudes. And I was like HOW, literally HOW are you not soloist yet? His turns, so freaking clean and effortless yet powerful as if his supporting leg is nailed to the ground. And his jump, is another one that jumps like there's no gravity. And this Fall season he debuted Puck in Dream. How can a man be both cute and strong and weightless? Like HOW???

I've seen Daniil dance twice, and when he did Ali from Le Corsaire, the entire theatre gasped at his entrance. It was hypnotic and he had multiple standing ovations, and that was when he was cast with Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev! I really think he is a master class in technique. He is a short king and there is nothing like his dancing out there.

i didnt expect danceur to be pronounced this way in english!! i love seeing how french loanwords transform once integrating english/another language + it make me gain new but familiar vocabulary that is oddly specific to one subject haha thank u for ur videos, they r so informative to me as someone who wants to try and get into new ballets, but has a hard time doing so being introduced to the field of dance with the people who work in it helps me appreciate ballet even if i dont necessarily sit down to listen/watch a new one

I’d add Ivan Vasiliev. I love his cheekiness in Don Quixote. And boy, can he jump. I think it was him that started the extreme backend they do at the end of some variations now. Very nice selection! I grew up watching Zakharova and Bolle dancing together at La Scala, and Sarafanov is my all time favourite dancer. Sadly, I believe he has retired from Mikhaolovskij not long ago, but not so sure. I'd like to mention one of my favourite dancers, Friedemann Vogel. He is the most elegant, artistic, clean, light and expressive dancer at once. His dancing is absolutely effortless, and he manages to support the ballerina in the back while at the same time being equivalent to her, in other words he doesn't disappear behind her. His interpretations of neoclassical story-ballets like Onegin or Lady of the Camellias is one of the most impressive art performances I've ever witnessed.

Hello, ladies. Greetings from England. Ah, VaDream! The Royal has a particularly good roster of male dancers right now, but I think consensus would be that Vadim leads them all. To your ‘effortless’ I would add ‘elegance’, which he has in spades, plus he seems to be a thoroughly nice guy. As well as Marcelino Sambe, I would also mention William Bracewell, another very elegant dancer. Watch him in Dances at a Gathering and you will see what I mean.

I honestly wouldn't be able to rank the RoH dancers atm, they're all so different and fabulous in their own ways ! They also approach the same roles in very varied manners, which gives such a diversity of readings of characters. They have some slightly less "high profile" principals (I hate calling them that) like Ryoichi Hirano or Alexander Campbell, who do amazing work too. Steven McRae's Mayerling was just *chef's kiss*.

I liked the bonus picks better than the main three bc Marcelino and Kimin are two of my personal favorites too! Lol. I wish you girls had included Carlos Acosta even tho he’s older now, but he was such a star with the Royal Ballet. I also like Ivan Vasiliev very much. I think Polunin could’ve been included but he’s so problematic and has too many projects going on outside of dancing that I don’t blame you girls for not featuring him. Plz do a historical version for both the men and the women next!! I want to see you girls talk about Misha and Nureyev, I like your way of describing dancers.

I moved to Italy from the United States in 2019 and let me tell you that the worship of this man (Roberto Bolle) is a real here ! I would say the only other dancer that has achieved his level of fame here is Carla Fracci. When she died a couple of years ago she was given a funeral on par with like an ex-President/queen/ pope. I have a feeling that he will be revered and much the same way, hopefully not for many many years though. Interestingly enough, I feel like Alessandra Ferri ended up being more popular overall in the United States than here even though this is where she was from. So yeah, expect a funeral fit for a dead president when Mr. Bolle’s time comes. He is an absolute cultural icon here.

I agree with this list absolutely, although as others said I would also put Carlos Acosta and obviously Daniil Simkin there too. Someone I also really enjoy to watch is Gergely Leblanc. He may not be this famous, he dances at the Hungarian State Opera, but i find his style powerful and delightful at the same time. :)

There's someone with ABT in a class video they shared this week...see a purple unitard in the last 15 minutes. But then as he was doing his turns a la second I realize a woman behind him was also phenomenal but didn't stand out with her yellow top lol.

Oops, not yellow top (although all are awesome)...meant the girl behind him after 1 hr 20. Sort of a red/orange top. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMmUrdKezpbWc2g.html

"Roberto Bolle is universally acknowledged as the biggest ballet star." Ha! Take that Denis Rodkin & Ivan Vasiliev! Joking aside, I had three favorite principals from the Bolshoi - two of whom (Alexander Volchkov and Ruslan Skvortsov) are no longer principals, which leaves just Mikhail Lobukhin, and I'm nervous he'll be retired out soon. Besides these three, my favorite principal is Leonid Sarafanov, formerly of the Mariinsky. He's my favorite "happy" danseur, able to really shine in the lighter roles, whereas the others are better suited to more serious roles, in my opinion.

YES KIMIN KIM!!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤ I was going to have *issues* if you didn’t mention him 😂 I was super lucky and saw him in La Bayadère and he was SPECTACULAR!!! Mind blowing, fabulous, amazing… all the words lol There’s also a danseur from Kazakhstan, Adam Zhanbaktiyar (? I follow him on Insta so not entirely certain his name) who just is stupendous

Late with my comment, I really like your great breakdown ! Good choices. Though, I also have a like of more character dancers than only the principals. I'm also fascinated of such like Derek Rencher, being more impressive with villains with stage presence (;

I love you guys. One thing....if you chose a 'danseur' who made dancing looked laboured, well I guess they wouldn't be on the list as that wouldn't be a quality that would lead them to the top of the list....any list of great male ballet dancers.

Your selection, with truly instructive reasons, was simply outstanding! Since several comment posters have mentioned Reece Clarke of the Royal Ballet - and sing it was world Ballet Day on the 1st Nov (my inner ballet nerd came out in full flow!) - here's a video for your delectation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7GGlJtovc7DhJ8.html Go to 4.02.30 - it's thirty minutes live recording od Reece Clarke and Natalia Osipova rehearsing for the current Don Quixote ROH production.
