I agree. Rachel had complications delivering Jess's Dream, too, but Rachel's Valentina nearly killer her. Nothing in the world should be worth risking the life of a horse that has done nothing but treat the owners and fans well...imo, poor Zenyatta has pretty rotten luck with her foals, too, and it might be better for her mental health to permanently retire her as well. Poor girl doesn't deserve to keep losing foals. It's hard for women when they lose their pregnancies/children. It can't be any easier for mares.

@@konaaukai5541 Actually and I don't mean this cruely you are projecting human emotion onto a horse. I'm also not saying it isn't sad when a foal is lost, to humans at least. In the wild a mare will reject and or leave a sick foal or one that can not keep up with the herd. The first few days what you are seeing is instinct to keep a foal alive so the species survives, not human motherly love. After a few days the mare doesn't even care and goes on about her life.
@rosamunddrag8971

@@nightmyst855 in a wild, yes. But domestic horses tend to be different from their wild counterparts. They are not only vocal, but more social and human-understanding. Mares can definitely feel anxiety and sadness over loosing a baby. Some even go into emotional distress. I dealt with this myself. Seen a mare that was trotting around looking for her foal for a week. She tried to make him stand up right after birth, even tho he was barely alive. She didn't let anyone into the stall, she had to be dragged out for the baby to be delivered to the vet. Thankfully, baby survived, but still. Stop saying that animals can't feel emotions. They experience them in a different way, but they still do. Humans and horses are both mammals with insane emotional spectrum.

Steve Haskins described Rags to Riches race in the Belmont like this in a great column: Rags to Riches, who had stumbled badly at the start and then raced wide the entire way, took the outside route, while Curlin, who had saved ground, split horses inside her with a quick burst of speed. Now, as they honed in on each other, it was time to see which one had the strongest will. It was a classic male vs. female confrontation, something you don’t see in most other sports. Rags to Riches’ powerful four-wide move had enabled her to outrun Curlin and establish a slight advantage turning for home. Curlin fought back, as both horses switched to their right lead on cue. Velazquez threw a wide cross on the reins to gather the filly, while Robby Albarado went to a right-handed whip, causing Curlin to duck in, away from the filly. When Albarado switched to a series of left-handed whips, Curlin came back out and bumped Rags to Riches. But the filly, who has been manhandling humans since she was a baby, was not about to be intimidated by the powerful chestnut. Albarado continued to hit Curlin left-handed, and again he came out and bumped Rags to Riches, who again shrugged it off. Velazquez resorted to only a single left-handed whip, then switched and gave her one right-handed whip. Her blood was up, and Velazquez realized she needed little encouragement. Although Curlin kept digging in and battling back, Rags to Riches refused to relinquish her head advantage. As she eased in slightly and Curlin again came out into her, the two were leaning all over each other as the wire approached. Most horses, especially fillies, would have been intimidated by the contact from a bruiser like Curlin, but Rags to Riches seemed to relish this test of superiority. Velazquez now was just waving the whip and leaving it all up to her. With sheer grit, determination, and tenacity, Rags to Riches kept her head advantage to the finish following a sizzling final quarter-mile in :23.83.

And it's somewhat lucky that it happened, at all. Street Cry came to Australia for a few seasons when he first went to stud, but his offspring didn't shoot the lights out, and so he was dropped from Australian service. But his early crop runners showed that they got better with age, and after an absence of a few years, Street Cry was given a second chance out here, but I do know that it was a 50/50 call. Thankfully for the racing world, they did go ahead and bring him out for a second time, and it was in that second life here that Winx was conceived.

I know what you mean KRG, but it's not really that amazing. Mares at best can only have one foal a year, so realistically they only get maybe 4-5 chances to produce a top runner. Stallion have hundreds of offspring in their lifetimes, and even the top stallions struggle to do better than one in ten being stakes class. Mares just don't get the statistical opportunity to show what they can pass on.

I hate how these videos make out racing to be something nice. A race horse starts racing as early as a two year old. Horses aren't supposed to be ridden until they are at least 3 and a half years old. Not only that but race horses are FORCED to run at unnatural speeds. And don't tell me horses love running. While they're happy to prance around and have zoomies, they do not appreciate being whipped for a few hundred meters or a few kilometers. Young race horses sometimes have fatal injuries which result in owners putting them down because they're worthless. Now, when a mare retires, she spends maybe a week or two a year not being pregnant. As you've seen in the Rags to Riches part, she was sold to Ireland in 2009 and had 12 foals since then. That's 1 foal a year. A mare is in foal for about 340 days, sometimes more, sometimes less, but the difference isn't usually more than 5 days give or take. When a race mare gives birth, she is almost instantly taken away to a stud farm where she gets into foal heat. Foal heat is what happens to a mare about a week after giving birth when she is around stallions. They instantly breed her and get her back to her foal that was without her for some time. This is stressful and cruel both towards the mare and the foal. And a lot of race horses in the world end up in meat factories. The ones with injuries get thrown away or killed. To the race industry, horses aren't animals but machines that work for them in unnatural conditions. So, a race mare spends a week or two A YEAR not being pregnant. After giving birth, she is taken away from her foal so she gets into foal heat, and then she is taken back to her foal. This cycle repeats on and on. Imagine being forced to be pregnant every year for over a decade. I understand horses are animals and some may say this is fine because horses in the wild would do the same. When you look at it, humans are also capable of the same thing. But pregnancy puts irreversible, massive strains on our bodies. Same thing happens to horses. These horses are not bred so the horse population rises. These horses are bred so they can become money machines. And most horses that end up on the track end up with terrible bone and tendon issues in the future. That's unavoidable for any horse that spends years on tracks. I'm sorry. Actually, I'm not. Horse racing is abuse. It's a terrible industry that uses pain (whipping) to force an animal to do something that animal is not supposed to do in order to get cash. The racing industry is trading horse lives for money.

@@balayagesalon I agree racing isn’t the same. Horses used to race 40-80 races before retiring now they are lucky to race 20. And added to that is the native dancer curse. Ruffian prob shouldn’t have raced as a 3 year old after getting a fracture at 2. Both her sire reviewer and dam shenanigans died from leg breaks. They need to more accommodating to take special care into lines like native dancer with a history of leg breaks. It is ridiculous the whole idea of the polyurethane tracks was to ensure more safety to the horses and then it was just trashed and Santa Anita and all the poly tracks were changed back to dirt after the bs of curlin and Rachel. Then Santa Anita and all the tracks switched and on track deaths dramatically increased and now horses are being ran a lot of the times on drugs. I love horses and racing but the need to seriously relook at interbreeding and drugging in the industry. The stigma being attached to horse racing is approaching the stigmA of captive performing killer whales and the future just needs the obsessed libs start attacking horse racing like they did sea world and we could watch the end of fastest 2 minutes in racing.

@marysueeasteregg
@marysueeasteregg 2 жыл бұрын
1) Zenyatta was famous for her Spanish walk, a dressage move which she did naturally. She did it before many of her races, perhaps all of them, in the walking ring and the post-parade. I don't know if it was nervousness, or a way of showing off for the crowd, or if she did the move around the barn, as well. I do know it was perfectly normal pre-race behavior for her and was oft commented upon; the Wikipedia entry on her mentions her "dance moves." In another video featuring Zenyatta, someone made the comment that her soundness would be questionable if she walked normally (because it was not normal for her). 2) A horse with laminitis is NOT going to entered in a race, and would certainly not be winning regularly over several years, as Zenyatta did. Nor would she have been able to carry her pregnancies without the extra weight exacerbating laminitis. There is a 3-minute video on KZfaq titled "ZENYATTA'S DANCE!!!.dv" showing her exhibiting this behavior in various post parades.

@@MollyGrue1 The jockeys aren't actually hitting the horse as THAT IS illegal. ALL racetracks have SPCA on standby and trust me when I say, there'd be severe consequences to ANYONE caught breaking that golden rule. It only appears that they're hitting the horse when in reality, they're hitting their boot. And if you were able too, you'd hear the whip making a sharp cracking sound, this is what encourages the horses to get a move on. Trust me, if you were to strike one of those horses, as sweated up as they are, it'd create an electric jolt. You'd literally down your horse within seconds. And there's been massive studies that have shown what these 'faux electric jolts' can do. It can cause muscles to burn, cook flesh, etc. At that point, a racehorse's career is literally over with. As for surplus foals or foals who don't run well, there's loads of options that breeding farms, owners, co-owners and share holders look into after a racing career is over. Many OTTBs become successful eventers, cross country racers, dressage horses, therapy horses and regular run of the mill, trail mounts. Keenland even plays host to specialized sales for such a thing ^^ But it's kept pretty hush hush because kill buyers are, sadly, a thing.

An interesting idea was put to me some years ago when I was actively involved in "bloodstock breeding" in Africa. It was this, that where one has a filly that can compete and win in open races against colts, it is because the filly carries a higher than usual percentage of testosterone. The excess of this male hormone that gives the filly her athletic ability, may well also hamper her reproductive ability...
