Two weeks ago our fan favorite in the grand prix dressage freestyle was Paula Matute Guimon who found herself on top of the podium last night. And we are thrilled for her. So this week we have a new fan favorite! Our fan favorites are chosen by the fans on our TikTok livestream.
----
Spanish rider Paula Matute Guimón pulled off the biggest win of her career, piloting her own and Julie McAllister’s 14-year-old Delagronge to the blue ribbon in the Grand Prix Freestyle CDI4*, presented by U.S. P.R.E. Association. The second “Friday Night Stars” evening freestyle on Friday, January 28, of the 2022 Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) in Wellington, Florida, also provided a personal best for Matute Guimón and the De Niro stallion of 74.480%. AGDF, which hosts seven weeks of CDI competition, runs through April 3.
It was an international podium, with Germany’s Christoph Koschel finishing runner-up on the striking grey Lusitano Favorito 11 (71.670%) and Mikala Münter (USA) filling third on Salsa Hit with 71.425%.
Runner-up Christoph Koschel found his horse, Favorito 11, during a clinic in Portugal.
“I train a few team riders from Portugal, and I found him there,” explained Koschel, who rode to music from “Peter and the Wolf.” “The guys said his head is a little too big, so they didn’t want to have him. I said I’d always wanted a Lusitano. It was just for fun, and I wanted to see where I can get to, and so I bought him when he was five, and now we’re in the international ring.
“He was a little scared under the lights in the canter tonight,” added Koschel, who explained that the horse was due to make his CDI debut last year but it was delayed due to white line disease in his hoof which took a year to clear up. “It’s really his first time away from home, but I was really happy with my ride.”

Finally a horse who doesn't look like he'd rather be anywhere else and with anyone but his rider. Plus, I love the light contact and the gently swinging tail- and no hint of over bending at all! Thank you!

Finally a performance that I watched with a smile on my face :DDD Ofc, there are hiccups (piaffe and pirouettes not in rhythm for example), but it is a damn good performance! Let's not forget that the rider knows to keep the curb rein loose and only use it if necessary. I may be a LITTLE bit biased - I love Baroque horses and to get see one performing, and not that version diluted with "german sport horse" blood, but one tru to its type, was a great pleasure! Ah, and kudos for the music! Befitting the breed :D

Great music for this horse! Lovely ride ... Great combination. It's nice to see no abuse! Soft hands and horse's expression says it all.

Well, I'll probably get yelled at again, but....I still say that Baroque horses are best suited for this kind of work, as opposed to Warmbloods. It comes more naturally to them.

I don't disagree with your observation. However, there are warmbloods who do Excell at Dressage. But, many are not suited for it. Additionally, this rider clearly displays true, classical Dressage riding technique. When a rider takes the time to strengthen their horse, a perfect example of that is Carl Hester and Charlotte DuJardin . So many dressage riders are more about the money and prestige instead of correct riding.

EXCEPT one little thing - extensions... Baroque horses are damn good at dressage - it was basically created for them- they are moving in natural collection, but extension is a little problematic, because of their built. To put it simply they are as high as they are long, and to do extensions is better if a horse is a little bit more long- more space for the legs movement. But, yup, it should be the general type of horse in dressage, not "german sport horse". I love Baroque horses, especially Pura Raza Espanola.

@Paulina Rapicka Good point I agree with your comment. Good extensions are almost impossible because of conformation.

Agree about the extension, but it seems dressage scoring is only about how much extreme extension can be shown. It's a bit absurd.

@@julie99nl agreed. I'd go so far as to say that the extensions are shoehorned in for the Warmbloods.

I love this horse's trot work, the way he carries himself and the rider's light contact. There were little hiccups in rhythm, and I feel like his canter is a bit choppy, but the transitions were really creative and impressive. The horse just seems focused and happy to be doing the work 🥰.

Gosh, it's nice to see a fairly relaxed horse, tail swinging naturally, appropriate head/ neck position, rider not jabbing with spurs or hands of iron. A loose curb rein! Not perfect .... room for improvement; and fun to watch.

Love the demeanor of the horse… the curb rein had barely any contact (this horse likely performs beautifully in a very simple bit or without one at all because of his breed’s natural conformation, build, & carriage.) And as much as I LOVED how light the rider was with his aids, the horse was lacking impulsion and real momentum. Not sure if anyone else noticed the horse was barefoot behind, and I could be totally wrong but specializing in correct free movement, that horse could use a better farrier and a bit more lower leg from the rider. These baroque horses naturally carry themselves beautifully and in my opinion are born suited for dressage - there is a reason the Spanish Riding School uses Lipizzaner stallions! And if the rider used leg correctly I guarantee spurs are completely unnecessary as well. Everyone should check out FUEGO XII at the Grand Prix Freestyle WEG Kentucky 2010…. THAT is impulsion and the rider has no spurs, does one handed tempis, it’s beautiful

Nice soft rider, great performance. I didnt care for the music. Just my opinion. Such technical music is hard to keep perfectly in sync. Found it a bit frantic in spots.

I see a lot of front leg action, but not a whole lot going on with the hind legs. The horse is supposed to be pushed from behind, not pulled from the front. This is how you end up with a perpetually lame horse. This doesn't even look like good riding.
@paulinarapicka
@paulinarapicka 2 жыл бұрын
No, that front legs action is a natural movement for this type of horse. The strong behind will come in time and training
@Frutticattygirl
@Frutticattygirl 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulinarapicka Given the training that horse likely gets then I've yet to see any horse get better hind leg action. Even if those types of breeds have bigger front action, it doesn't change the fact that there's no hind leg action....at all. It's like looking at two different horses in one. I give that horse 1, max 3, years in the lime light.
@horsecrazy4978
@horsecrazy4978 2 жыл бұрын
@@Frutticattygirl I would have to disagree. There are points when he is less engaged in the hind end yes, but there are also plenty of points where he rocks back rather nicely. besides, with the lots of little rhythm hiccups I think this horse still has a good bit to go in his training. I thought the riding was well done too, even if the test wasn't perfect.
@Frutticattygirl
@Frutticattygirl 2 жыл бұрын
@@horsecrazy4978 Any training he gets from here on out will only make the issues with the drive of the hind legs worse, unless the rider stops being so heavy handed on the bit and stops training the horse like they're afraid the horse will run away or refuse to obey them. This rider does in no way trust their horse. It doesn't take an expert to see how tense this horse is in his entire body.
@horsecrazy4978
@horsecrazy4978 2 жыл бұрын
@@Frutticattygirl ??????? Well you clearly arent anywhere close to an expert. This horse is incredibly relaxed and calm throughout the test and is very willing to perform. The biggest and most obvious indicators of this being his ears and tail. If you know anything about horse behavior/body language you would know that this horse is comfortable and happy in the environment and what is being asked of him. And the rider isn't afraid of the horse either. In fact you can see the double reins dangling at points if you think that the rider is trying to hold him back with all his might. Tense? Bruh watchu talkin about?
