Wow. Thank you SO MUCH. I've been scouring the internet for quite some time now in order to figure out what grip might be best for me to start fire fans. I haven't found anything with as much great, practical, useful, and straightforward advice as this video. Your information about what's harder on the wrists, what you might prefer for hand size, as well as the demonstrations of 'flow' vs 'static' movement differences is absolutely what I needed to make my decision. THANK YOU!!!!!

I'd say, one more factor to consider is that fans were always meant to be a large and beautiful prop. So by settling for comfortable small fans you sort of sacrifice the overall look. For example, some negative space moves might be easier with small fans, but they also don't value as much because moving something small in the negative space just looks easier than when it is barely passing at all with large fans (and that is what makes it a 'trick').

Hi Rem! Thanks for watching, and for your comment :) I think the factor you mention is more of a personal preference on aesthetics rather than a practical aspect of the grip/movement style. I don't feel fans are 'meant to be' big, or small - both styles exist and are valid. Some people find the larger size more beautiful and impressive (like yourself), while others prefer the aesthetic of the small size - and many people like both! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I personally don't think choosing a small ring (or large ring) is settling, but just going for a different look and feel. Cool to hear why you prefer the large size though! Thank you for sharing :)

I found that some companies offer small ring or large ring fans in both big or small fan shapes such as neoflowart. And some people like the smaller fan shapes for smaller spaces and crowded areas (like me sometimes) while others like bigger fans for performance and to utilize more space. In the beginning, larger fans were available but as the popularity of fans start to grow then different variations of fan shapes and styles start being available which is very refreshing in my opinion.

@@JessySpin I mean originally, like before 2007, fans were large, because there are more fire spread around the person and this was perceived as more beautiful by muggles. Because when you spin them there is this illusion of big circle moving around, symmetrical and with right proportion to human body. When you reduce the size, reduce the number of wicks to 4, and now they are not even making a circle, you lose this illusion. At least that is what I mean saying "fans were meant to be big"

@@iridescencewithin6657 sure, there are different people who like different things, but it does not matter what you like, what matters is what your audience likes. So if your only reason to like smaller fans or smaller rings is your personal comfort, then that is where we disagree. Papers fans are even more comfortable :)

Hi there! If I understand correctly, I think this video should already cover your questions! I refer to the two style of rings as 'small ring' and 'large ring' here, as I find it to be more descriptive. But small ring fans also get referred to as 'america/tech style', and large ring fans get referred to as 'russian grip'. So this comparison and description of moves of small ring vs large ring is the same as american/tech style vs russian. Hope that helps!

Hey, I was hoping I could ask you a question. I don’t really know if my hands are supposed to be small or average. I keep trying different sized rings to see what works best. So my question is this: Is the idea to have two fingers comfortably in the ring or is it 3 depending on what techniques I’d like to work on? I can definitely fit two fingers with a little wiggle room in a 1.5” ring. I know you mentioned that size typically being small for many people. My palm is measuring right around 3”. I measured in the same place you’ve demonstrated across the palm. I bought all the supplies to make a practice fan so I’m not just practicing without a prop. I wanted to be sure of what size I needed before I actually order from Etsy. Thank you so much for your help! And I’m really excited that you offer classes! I didn’t really know where to start with this but you have made it really easy. :-)

Two vs three fingers is mainly a decision based on comfort. For example, I find two for me is a bit of a strain along my forearm, while three feels much more natural/comfortable. And because I prefer three, that's why around a 2" ring works best for me (I can fit 3 into a 1.5" ring but it's squishy). Fan techniques will work the same whether you have three or two fingers! It's just what feels more comfortable for you. Exciting that you're starting your fan journey! So glad the videos have been helpful. Welcome to FireLily Family!! :D
