The venue is a Fans Forum in East London back in 1996. Frank Lampard was just 18 years old. Harry Redknapp was his manager at West Ham United. And the Hammers boss was adamant that Frank would go to the very top when a disgruntled fan told him Lampard was not as good at Scott Canham or Matt Holland.
"I did not want to say this in front of him. But he will go right to the very top. Right to the very top," insisted Redknapp.
"There ain't no doubt about that in my opinion. Because he's got everything that's needed to become a top class midfield player. His attitude is first class. he's got strength. He can play. he can pass it. And he can score goals."
When challenged by the fan who criticised him for letting Scot Canham and Matt Holland leave the club, Harry repeated his conviction when he said: "I'm telling you I couldn't feel more strong how I feel about him."
While Lampard looked on embarrassed by the criticism, chief executive Peter Storrie weighed in to support his manager saying: "It's not just Harry's opinion. I don't know if many of you knew but during the European champions in the summer England decided to take several young players from all over the country to various training sessions. When terry Venables came to the ground to speak to Harry and I not too long ago, he said there were two outstanding youngsters of all the ones he had. That was Frank and Rio (Ferdinand). "

Lampard is a few years older than me but as a kid growing up in East London, I knew of Lampard in the youth set-up and used to watch him, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand amongst others and knew just like Harry that Frank Lampard and Joe Cole would become top players I couldn't see it in Rio at the time but he went to do amazing things too. Frank's shooting low and hard was what captured me cos my dad always taught me that and Frank had mastered it.

I love Harry Redknapp for this . I'm an Arsenal fan . But sticking up for a young kid like that is unbelievable . And how right was he . What a career he's had . For me he's ahead of Gerrard and scholes just for the amount of goals hes scored . Any midfelder he scored that many goals and has that many assists is number one on the team sheet . Goals win games and it's the hardest thing to do on the football pitch .

I was with you until you put him ahead of Scholes and Gerrard. I'm a United supporter and think they were all outstanding players but I wouldn't put Frank ahead of them, as fantastic as he was. The greatest unknown for Lampard I feel is that 'ghost goal' against Germany. If that goal had counted, and England had went onto win the game, I think his legacy would have increased a hell of a lot.

Personally, I feel like Scholes never got replaced in my team and he's the sort of player that you don't really appreciate until he's gone. I remember watching this in 2010 before Frank won the Champions League, what the owner still wanted. People were STILL saying he hadn’t made it in the comments. He was runner up in the UCL in 2008 and later beat Bayern Munich at their home ground in 2012 to put this to bed. Not to mention the multiple EPL titles he already had. I think it is fitting that he also retired as Chelsea’s all-time record Goal Scorer’s considering the players Chelsea have had, and that he was a midfielder!

Shows why football managers are football managers, everything Harry predicted came true: He said Canham wasn't good enough, Holland was probably good enough for lower premier league and championship, and Lampard would go to the very top. 20 years later: Canaham spent entire career in provincial lower league teams, Holland had some good premier league spells with Ipswich and Charlton and got 49 caps for Ireland Frank ends his career with Premier league, FA cup and Champions league winners medals and 106 caps for England.

Lampards maturity at this age is scary... Everything that's being said he isn't even considering or taking on board, it's just bouncing off him as the words are said. You can see in his calmness and demeanor that he knows in himself he is going to be successful, he is probably already training to the point where it's impossible for him to fail. What an inspirational human being.

He said in a recent Sky Sports interview (the google questions one) that he didn't feel great at the time, but loved Harry's backing of him. For him to come through that pressure and hatred he got from West Ham fans to have the career he did is incredible to me.

I remember his first PL goal at Oakwell on the opening day of 97/98 season. He came on as sub and scored the winner literally within 30 seconds of coming on. It broke my heart that day but what a career the man has had. Unbelievable footballer.

Well I mean the "fan's" got a point... after those those years all Lampard has done is won few PL titles a couple of fa cups community shields the europa, captained the side to win the Uefa champions league became Chelsea's top goalscorer. The only midfielder top be amongst the top PL goalscorers of all time. Worked under several mangers and styles and yet contributed goals and assists . Rishi I’m definitely not a Chelsea fan but respect Lampard, and it will be good for the game if he’s successful as a manager. Great to see younger managers like Lampard, Solskjaer, Arteta at the helm of big clubs. And in frank’s case it’s good to see an English manager getting a chance.

Once a year I watch this video. Even Harry at the time, didn't know how true his statement was. One of the most profound predictions ever. Now, Frank was one of the best midfielders ever, a true Chelsea legend. But wait, he'll also go in history as one of the best football managers ever. So, when Harry said "He'll go to the very top", did he mean as a footballer, as a manager or both? Frank has 3 qualities that make him unique as a player and as a manager - enormous passion for the game, professionalism and very hard work...

Neale Bertram probably before being his uncle. I went to school with Frank and he used to play 2 years above us though he was in our year. He was in the school 1st XI at 14, in the school cricket team and got 7 As at GCSE I think!

At 17, young Frank had to walk into West Ham, from a private school background where his Uncle was the manager and his Dad was the first team coach. Fans doubted him. Said he was being favoured. His own teammates doubted him. Said he was being favoured. Rio said there were times when Frank could probably hear his own team mates doubt him. What Harry knew probably before Frank knew himself, that he had the character and work ethic to make it. This was probably the first time Frank had heard his uncle praise him in this manor.
