Fan Theories #30 : Explaining The Many Geneses Of The Cybermen

This Fan Theory is a bit more of a Did You Know…? but one that explains a point raised by many fans in Series 10
Any ideas or theories discussed in these videos are purely my own interpretation of things that I personally like to think of as canon, and I do not speak for anyone other than myself in these videos.
I am not suggesting these theories are official canon or that anyone else should accept them as canon, unless they wish to do so, please respect my personal opinions/ideas/theories even if you do not agree with them.

*_IMPORTANT NOTE : Please read before commenting_* The parallel evolution theory, along with another instance of the Cybermen originating from another universe are addressed in the Big Finish UNIT boxset Cyber-Reality. However at the time of recording I have not listened to this story, hence why it is not referenced in the video.

I always liked that idea that was hinted at the Cybermen book by David Banks. The Original Cybermen, the ones from the Tenth Planet were the originals but later more advanced Cybermen, the ones we see in the Invasion and Tomb of the Cybermen, are ones who left Mondas to form their own colonies, such as invading Telos and taking over Planet 14. The ones we see in Revenge later locate the ones frozen on Telos and these become the 80s style Cybermen, a hybrid design reflecting the technology.

But for my money, Spare Parts is the best version of the origin. And my headcanon theory is Mondas also had Silurians, and when the Mondasians dug down into the planet, they found these remnants and that allowed them not only to survive underground but was the basis for the first Cybermen technologies. Consider the three-eyed Silurians and the handles leading up to the "third eye" which in some stories, like Revenge of the Cybermen was a weapon. Make sense?

There are surrounded by much differing media, hopefully I'll eventually cover them all in my A Brief History series but the idea of a hybrid design is very interesting! As for your idea about the Silurians it's certainly an interesting idea and maybe a good idea for a theory in future, with credit to you for the idea of course!

@@willgillies5670 heck whats to say that maybe some of the cybermen aren't Also Silerians that were converted into cybermen, along with the human ones

Just to add something, in the audio play from the first war master box set, Cole creates by accident a cyber man like race to survive during the time war, so I think this also fits into your theory of the multiple starting points. Great theory btw

There is another parallel universe origin of the Cybermen, in the unit boxset 6 Cyber-Reality. Where the Cybermen have control 48% of their universe and they invade other parallel universes using headsets.

I haven't listened that yet so I wasn't sure if they were ACTUALLY from a parallel universe or not, but I thought by including the reference to parallel worlds such as Pete's World is covered that in case they were

CaptainJimiPie yeah I know, sorry I just wanted to bring it up because it is a good listen with some great performances from Jemma Redgrave, Ingrid Oliver and Derek Jacobi. It nice to see lore videos on Doctor Who especially Big Finish related, great video 👍

Could Daleks be considered Kaled Cybermen?

They are similar but personally I’d say no as the Cybermen slowly replaced their body parts with cybernetic components, whereas the Dalek shells were designed (with the intention) to protect those inside them or be used as a war machine/tank for a single Kaled Eventually it lead to the Kaled mutating but they still remained separate from the casing rather that integrated into it, unlike a Cyberman
