Lily Gladstone's gonna shine this year, I can feel it!

The Mill Valley Film Festival just screened this and Erica Tremblay was there for the Q&A. She said that Lily was attached to the project right away and casting the 13 year old was a long search because the teen would have to be able to match the very presence of what Lily brings to the screen because she is THAT strong. She said that once the teen was cast, she and Lily spent two weeks immersing themselves in the language and they hit it off super well and became tricksters to the rest of the cast. She also described how she herself was of mixed heritage and attended a 3 year language immersive program in Canada because the Indigenous language we hear in the film is endangered and only about 29 elders in Canada speak it any more. This film is the first time this language has been spoken in a film at all. There is a scene that is light hearted about young girls getting their periods (won't spoil it), and Erica based it on her own experience. This is another female centered project that is so rare it must be celebrated as Certain Women and also Unknown Country that showcase Lily also. All 3 films would make for a fantastic trio for screening at a film festival. Lily is one of those for the ages in film history.

Thank you for this review, this is another movie I would not have been aware of otherwise but it sounds really worth seeing. I have Indigenous friends in my life who have spoken about the fraught politics of adoption and the long history of government interference in family and cultural life on reservations. There has recently been heightened controversy in Canada particularly over the discovery of mass unmarked graves for children who died at residential schools where Indigenous children were taken away from their homes and deliberately denied a chance to learn their parents' language, all in the name of assimilation. If you just google 'residential school graves' you will see more about this painful history. I would like to learn more about these types of issues while also being moved by a well-made piece of art. I'm an Indigenous (Osage) person. My white mother was granted custody of my brother and I over our Osage father when they split, and that definitely hindered my brother's and my connection to our culture. I'm really excited to see this one. EDIT: The Indian Child Welfare Act actually gives the tribes authority over the adoption of Indigenous children. It makes it harder to remove Indigenous kids from their homes and gives placement priority to family and other Natives before non-Natives. The Supreme Court heard a challenge to it back in November. If overturned, it will have massive implications for Indigenous families, so I implore anyone interested to look into it.

Is there any chance if you guys could do a video on Past Lives? That's the one that as soon as reviews started coming out on letterboxd that immediately caught my attention. And sounds right up my alley. I just wish it was available to purchase a digital screening for it for the general public.
