Man On Fire has a 39% from critics and an 89% from audiences. That movie is legit. Tony Scott and Denzel Washington brought it.

I never knew that not liking "Love Actually" was a thing. Every person I met at least liked it. My father loves it, and he's not an open romantic. It's so not a "girls' movie", it's just a really good romantic movie, point. Also very British (well to me, and I'm neither British, nor American, but anyway...). Aside from the actual love stories there's so much to enjoy - the whole Billy Mack line, the "American girls" piece, the prime minister's awkwardness. I cry at the airport scene, at the wedding scene when the musicians start to pop up and play All You Need Is Love and at the funeral scene. I totally get why Notebook is cheesy and actually I have to close my eyes to a few things to enjoy the romantic side of it, but Love Actually is a completely different category, it's smart and stylish and much more realistic in terms of the iterations of love, in contrast with the stories themselves that are a little cliche (deliberately I guess).

That is a great example of a movie that you go into leery of an SNL crew film (I know Lonely Island is only tangentially related to SNL) and you come out like that film shouldn't have been as funny as it was.

Since they brought up MacGruber, does anyone else think Hot Rod is stupidly/absurdly funny? The whole LSD scene just cracks me up. Then there's riot scene. Mmm, so good. Anyway, Compared to MacGruber's 47% Critic score and 37% Audience score, Hot Rod has a 41% Critic Score and 64% Audience score. I really thought MacGruber was funny, but Hot Rod just hit the funny bone a little harder.

I agree with Roth's comment about how perfect a movie is should be judged on what it set out to do. Thus, we get perfect comedies, dramas, action movies, horror movies.

Roth, I was COMPLETELY in agreement with you and Dan when it came to the Greatest Showman. I think it would have worked better had it been fictional and they went all in on the message presented in "This is Me". "From Now On" is the song I enjoyed the most and it actually made me a little emotional, but I'm also the type of person who cries during the opening crawl of Star Wars. It tricked me into thinking the movie was better than it actually was. Music has a way of doing that *cough*Dual of the Fates*cough*.

Based on what Roth said about "Rate a film on what they set out to do and did they achieve", one of my favorite movies of all is the low rated (both by critics 28% and audiences 42%) comedy "Take Me Home Tonight". I think its a very good homage to the 80s classics films, with a great cast and characters. I love how every character from this movie is going through some sort of life crisis, even though the film is mainly focused on Topher Grace. Anyway, I really don't care what people think about this movie. I just love it.

With Empire Records watch the original cut not the re cut edition that they released on DVD first called Remix Special Fan Edition. There was some strange interference to make it more audience friendly for the DVD release it made a rather mess of the movie. Real strange to think about with studio meddling these days for theatrical releases.

These are movies I like enough to own in my collection with crap tomato scores and way better (like fresh level) audience scores: Secondhand Lions, I am Sam, The Man Who Knew Too Little, What Dreams May Come, The Mummy(1999), Penelope, I Robot, Elizabethtown, August Rush, The Thief and the Cobbler, The Book of Henry, Only You, Corrina Corrina, The Lake House, and Where the Buffalo Roam. I guess I don't have a critic's taste. I like movies that get me hooked on characters and make me feel. Corrina, Corrina is one of my favorites and The Man Who Knew Too Little is hilarious.

Just because a movie is a fan favorite doesn't mean it's good. I mean, I find Showgirls to be very entertaining and funny (unintentionally) however I wouldn't be caught dead saying it is a good film (though Gina Gershon gives a great performance as Cristal Connors, probably because she might be one of the few who knows what kind of film she's doing). I enjoy eating a Cheeseburger. I wouldn't say it was good for your health. And a film isn't good just because it was commercially successful or else Steven Seagal missed out on an Academy Award nomination for Under Siege.

Most of the reviews I've seen on The Greatest Showman are that the movie is terrible from a story standpoint but it is enjoyable solely because the songs are fun and make you feel happy. I've not seen it. It doesn't sound like something I'd spend money on based on those reviews. It's been a bit since I've watched the review here on Screen Junkies but I do feel that the review is in line with other reviews minus commentary on how fun the songs are. I think you guys did your job to warn people that it's probably not something you want to spend your money on. I did see Pitch Perfect because that review here said it was a delightful fun movie and that was exactly my experience and what I was wanting the day I saw it. I also saw Paddington while I was sick over New Year's because Roth recommended it so highly. I didn't get out to see Paddington 2 this weekend but look forward to watching that sometime over the next week.
The breathtaking visuals of John Wick films.
