The whole reason for blowing in them was due to dust getting inside. It started with the original NES games however it has been said that blowing into them actually could damage the game "Frankie Viturello, who is one of the hosts of the gaming show Digital Press Webcast among many other gaming-related projects -- he also worked in a game store for years. Viturello's first response was: "While I admittedly may have dabbled in a little cartridge-blowing as a naive NES-playing youth, I've long-since been an advocate for not doing it with the stance that for whatever it may do to aid in the temporary functionality of an NES, it ultimately opens the door for damage and distress to the hardware." mentalfloss.com/article/12589/did-blowing-nintendo-cartridges-really-help

I honestly never got what was the big deal about the N64 controler's design. Just grab the middle and right part of the controller and it's perfectly fine. The left part with the D-pad was only used for the few games who required. I seriously never had any questions or issues with the controler growing up with it.
@bsslayer4771

Yeah, as a 12 year old (almost 13) when I got the console, a few days before the official launch (thanks to my parents of course for reserving it for me). Not once did I wonder how to use the controller, was common sense! The Z button was the L button for games that required you to use the thumb stick. I thought the control was great and the first of it's kind for a major console.

So it would be basicly the same experince as what they were used to in the 2D game era. It was a back up Plan...

2nd best feeling controller ever. If it had a modern joystick, it may have been the best. The third handle on the left was for 2d games using the d-pad, but Nintendo didn't really develop 2d games as they figured out 3d pretty quickly (except good camera controls). It was never intended to be used at the same time as the middle handle.

After playing with modern day consoles, I think n64 controller has aged poorly. I played an emulated version of Goldeneye with a PS3 controller, my experience was butterry smooth. Nintendo is and was really proud of the durability and dependability of their products, sort of like how American and Japanese automakers are proud of the durability and dependability of their trucks. At the Nintendo museum in Japan they have a Gameboy that was partly melted and slammed by hundreds of pounds of concrete when the apartment it was in got blown up by a jet fighter. The Gameboy still works.

We couldn't afford the newer gaming stuff when I was a kid so my first video games were on the N64. We had Starfox, Xena, and a racing game called Wipeout. Though we also had a really old computer I'd play Putt Putt and Freddie the Fish on. I remember going to a friend's house and seeing a real computer gaming set up and watching KZfaq for the first time. It was a video of Spiderman aggressively dancing at people on the street. Blew my mind.
