The name Mary Sue actually originates from a star treck self insert fanfiction, in which the main character was named Mary Sue :) she’s forever been used as an example of what not to do in writing. Mary Sues name has been burned into my mind as an art and writing interested kid. It was very very controversial if ones oc was a “Mary Sue” like literally one of the deadly sins

Not the Polyvore links. I completely forgot about the icon that was polyvore. The constant hyperlinks of outfits to help the reader truly 'immerse' into the fic because no one could be bothered to describe them.

I recently got into fanfiction again after 8 years without reading any. I was in a really bad place mentally, failing all my uni classes (still am) and just felt like I needed some fluff in my life, something to make me feel less miserable, so I looked up fanfics of this one couple I'm currently obsessed with and now I'm addicted to fanfiction again lol

Bad boy x Good girl works best when 1. The "bad boy" isn't a bad person; if he's just a rascal who might be out of pocket sometimes, maybe he's a bit blunt or rude bc he wants to be honest, and when you actually evaluate his actions you realise he's got a good moral compass, and 2. the "good girl" likes his rascal personality and doesn't want to "fix" him; if she likes him for his principles, and stands up for her own principles at the same time, and genuinely enjoys his presence, I love it! It's also REALLY important to me if she has desires and wants of her own that he supports. He's got to also genuinely enjoy her presense and not want to change her. It's my favourite trope when done right, but can VERY easily be written so wrong, so toxic, which is why I just write the stories myself in my own head before I fall asleep lol When the two of them are always arguing I'm like "do u even like each other 😭😭😭 stop forcing urselves,,, just kiss and move on,, it's okay 😭😭😭"

i used to not get the appeal of fanfiction about real people until i got back into k-pop and missed reading fanfics from a fandom i really enjoyed. I've found most of the people writing are just using these celebs names as stand-ins for their original characters, or base their original characters of certain personality traits they like in these celebs. honestly I've found these are the people within the fandoms that are most aware that you can never know your fav celeb intimately because we're not their friends and they're always playing character in public to certain extent -- or at least the more mature ones do, cuz i am sure there might a few young ones that believe they know their fav k-pop boy intimately. k-pop itself just lends itself very easily for these fan-created media because we never really know much about the singers as people themselves since they're always trying to keep a very wholesome image despite it all so there's a level of disconnect that artists in western media are less likely to achieve, i think. also it's just fun to envision these celebs in ridiculously mundane situations.

This is such an obscure topic that many people don't know about and I'm so glad you covered it!! Fanfiction was such a big part of my childhood, teenhood, and a smaller but still important part of my adulthood. Loved hearing your breakdown of it, especially as someone who was more a Twihard than a Potterhead in my teens, and of course loved the My Immortal section call-out is always so funny. I'll add my opinion on fics of real people. Firmly in the 'no' camp, as the character's are (usually) fleshed out and have distinct and appeasing personalities, but the real person is someone we as fans don't know at all. I tried reading a real person fic when I was younger, and even then it felt creepy. Anyways, another amazing video essay Jordan!!

Personally, I find the fun of fanfiction is in the romance of fictional characters who make sense together. I never went for y/n or original characters, I actually disliked that trope. I still like reading about people falling in love, but I reach more for established pairings rather than anyone I could see myself in, probably something to analyze in therapy lol

i loved this !!! your excitement is contagious jordan and i really appreciate how you approached the topic from a place of love and not mockery. obviously there is a lot of room for criticism when it comes to fanfiction and it's totally ok to laugh at it sometimes but too often do i see people looking down on the genre without acknowledging any of the good parts and thinking they're "better than" because they never partook in fanfic "culture".... i agree with your point on fanfics about real people though

There's another Harry Styles fanfic that's published and there's four books in the series. It's called Anarchy by Megan DeVos. Basically imagine a post-apocalypse/dystopian society with the last of us overgrown-post-warzone city scenery and rival groups set up (with a touch of hunger games childhood trauma) and put harry styles and an original character as the leads. It's very teenie with the love-story in the first book but the story itself does develop into a more serious plot and actually overtakes the love story later on. Plus the world building is very good imo. There's a fancast list and the first couple chapters of each book on wattpad still but obvs not the full series and also for the published books harry is now henry. It's a good book if you were into the maze runner/hunger games/divergent type literature.

I'll be honest, I love fanfiction as much as anyone, but I understand why some authors don't want anyone to take the world they've crafted and use it in any-which-way. Especially when the characters/worlds are Bad™ or if they have some historical context (which often need to be handled with gravitas). Fanfiction writers sometimes take them and remove all of the bad/important things that the original author included in the first place. It can come off as "I just want a fluffy little setting and fluffy little characters where I *the fanfic writer inserting themselves* can do whatever I want," which I get, but I understand why some authors wouldn't want that.

im glad u mentioned rpf bc i feel like when people have been talking about fanfic they haven't mentioned it when it's a pretty big part of fanfic worlds - at least in my experience, bc my primary fandoms as a teenager were always musicians. for me, i was always kinda uncomfortable with non-au (alternate universe) fics, i.e. when it's set in "real life" and can lean more into theorising (i think frerard is a big thing for this lol), but i think, as someone else mentioned, a lot of rpf is basically treating these real people like actors portraying their original characters. a good example of this imo is unholyverse, a huge mcr fic series that has the first section based off the film stigmata (i was also surprised no one mentioned uhv as an iconic fic lmao). fundamentally i also think no one should be showing fanfic to the people theyre writing about or anything honey this podcast isn't big enough for the two of us also has an ep (i think it's the 'religious ecstacy in the pit' one) that does mention rpf and they basically say that in that instance the real people portrayed aren't those real people like they're a representation/they become a character in a way, which i think is rly interesting. for me, i think this is definitely true with people who have more of like a public face/persona like a musician or an actor etc whereas i find the fact that rpf exists about football players rly weird/hilarious bc of the lack of fandomisation of football and footballers not rly having that kind of persona if that makes sense? loved this tho this was so good and u unlocked deeply repressed memories of quotev and the polyvore and weheartit attachments!!

I hated using Wattpad. When I uploaded my fanfiction, it just wouldn't show up in the categories I tagged bc you can't filter "new" stories, the algorithm prefers popular stories. But how are people supposed to discover my work and find out if they like it when it's not in the search? Help also couldn't help me, they were like, "but I can find your story? It's there, I can read it and everything. What's your problem?" And I was like, "yeah, but you had to specifically look for the title to find it. Don't you see a problem there?" And the answer was no

RPF is, indeed, a bit strange if you think about it too closely. I have still been reading various forms of it for, like, twelve years at this point. In my experience the people writing and reading that sort of thing are very much aware that it's not really about the real people but rather just uses their names and appearances (and public personas) in order to write a story in a setting that the writer finds interesting, like the music scene or whatever. Nevertheless it should be kept out of sight of the people whose names get mentioned as much as possible because, well, yeah. I can see why that would make someone uncomfortable. Links to that stuff definitely don't belong on Twitter, not even as a joke.

It's great that you recognized the queer representation in fanfiction, but I'm a little disappointed you didn't go a step further and cover the importance of fanfiction to ace (asexual) folk. Many are a lot more comfortable exploring sexuality through media, and fandom helps with repressed sexuality in general too. For example, I didn't fully understand sexual attraction or even craving physical touch as a teenager until I found smut that I really enjoyed reading. Through connecting with fictional crushes I found out I'm actually demisexual (+biromantic, gender didn't really matter as I read lots of gay fics too). It's also worth mentioning fictosexuality = being mostly attracted to fictional characters. Yup, there's a label for it! Anygays, great episode 👍👍
