To be fair, they also did this in even older smut/trashy novels. Both 90's romance novels, and 1900 romance novels. Probably earlier... definitely old folk tales actually, basically the concept of consent has never been very popular... Although, I think it's also worth considering stories about non-consent as a fetish rather than as a reflection on our ability to respect women or something. I like @Evie lupine 's video on Belle Delphine for an explanation of this distinction. I'm sure it's not sex-consent-awareness-ability-healthy for kids, obviously, but ya. If you're in to that as an adult, that can be chill if it's consensual-non-consent with, like, safewords. That's common 🤙 Got cross faded playing the drinking game in this, so blame that for the essay lol

I wouldn't even call them "bad boys", these guys are just straight up abusive assholes. The bad boy/girl trope is supposed to be about not conforming to the patriarchy and rebelling against an unjust system, hence society deeming them as "bad" simply cause they don't conform to these rules. And somewhere down the line this whole trope got warped into something else entirely.
@carissashley
@carissashley 3 жыл бұрын
Same. I grew up in an abusive household and so once I was out I knew strongly to steer clear, but I STILL have friends who are enchanted by this. And I...do not get it. For the most part, I just try to help them keep it fictional. I know for sure if any one of my friends ended up in a relationship like in After, I would not be afraid to physically fight to make sure she was okay.

The fact that so much sexual fanfiction was written about one direction members while they were still minors makes me so sad. And it's especially gross that a lot of it was written by adults. This happens in so many fandoms and it's just normalized in fan culture. I feel like more people are calling it out these days but it's still overall not addressed enough.
@JamesChessman
@JamesChessman 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t really know the specifics but I would expect a fanfic to let the reader interpret the ages however you want to? It’s fiction after all, lol. But I could be wrong because I’ve never read this lol
@mashiromihoazuki
@mashiromihoazuki 2 жыл бұрын
Its not just normalised it is very well-entrenched in fan culture. Fanfiction itself isn't bad bc it encourages people to hone their writing skills and be creative and helps fans to express their passion for a piece of media. These days people are more critical of them bc the readers themselves have grown up and see what they didnt see before. You'll notice that a lot of the stuff that ppl find problematic come from fanfic that were written around 2000-2010. Most recent ones don't have this problem, or are usually too lowkey to have any influence worthy of ppl to call out for.

quick reminder that this movie/fic wouldn’t exist if 9/11 never happened 😀👍 **explanation if anyone is confused: “After” is inspired by fifty shades of gray, which originated as a twilight fanfiction. Now, twilight was inspired by one of the most - if not _the_ most popular rock band of the 2000s; My Chemical Romance. Edward is inspired by MCR’s lead singer, Gerard Way. Gerard formed My Chem after he witnessed 9/11 on the way to his internship at Cartoon Network and was basically like “yeah, this ain’t for me, chief” (It’s also ironic how Gerard had a friend around the time twilight was written - who’s middle name is Edward lmfaooo)

51:12 When I was 13/14 like 2/3 years ago, I was obsessed with the published book (After) and said something similar when I and my mother had a fight. I said something like “Only because you can’t control anything in your life doesn’t mean that you have the right to control me”. Long story short: Never try to use arguments from a Wattpad based book.

Ooooof, that's gross of her. Last I heard of her shennanigans, the Shadowhunters TV show had angered her because it did a better job of fleshing out her characters and their motivations, and she was pissed that Magnus and Alec in the show were so popular but show fans often refused to acknowledge the book versions. The actor for Alec in an interview said 'why don't we just throw out the books?' Love him. By the conclusion of the TV show, the actors and directors mostly stopped trying to make the author happy. It didn't help that she sided with booktubers who were mostly straight/white and mean about the Shadowhunters cast and characters they only liked in the pages they knew. I don't think the fandom schism will ever fix itself after that debacle.

@@somethingaboutlemons3540 that was 100% me. It was this surreal, out of body experience; she was someone I saw as a mentor, this big famous author who seemed genuinely interested in the writing of some random teenage girl from New Zealand... I can't really convey how devastating it was to my self confidence for YEARS. So moral of the story, I never share my original fiction to this day, let alone put it on the internet.

Honestly, the person who I feel the most bad for is Harry Styles. I feel so sorry that he has a bunch of these fanfictions in which his character is something that he is far from in real life (and most likely condemns these tropes, such as rape, unconsensual sex, etc). I would feel so uncomfortable just to know that people (young teens especially) write these stories about you, and especially if it gets made into a movie series

i mean most times, in stories like these, they write out unrealistic fantasies that would never happen in real life, like i'm pretty sure no one actually wants to be kidnapped, you write out crazy wild scenarios that are like what ifs. and everyone goes through this phase where they fantasize about (read this dramatically please) "being the only one able to control and tame the wid tendencies of this hot damaged person" so i do think after falls more into that category, except that it's set in a real setting and portrays an abusive relationship which is triggering. and also young writers tend to be influenced by the things they consumed, as is clearly the case for anna, and a lot of relationships that were popular at the time had this element of the broody bad boy that acted all tsundere (okay the only one i'm thinking of is like damon and edward, but like those are bad examples lmao) and it was something she was into i guess. i am not defending the relationship or whatever, i've not read or seen the movie, i only watched like a million videos on them lmao
