I have always supported Elaine. But what I did not appreciate was her taking to social media and said she expected it. That makes no sense. Yes I’m glad she starts her season but go train some more for real. Or she could open in a lower caliber race. That’s humiliating for the reigning champ. I’m saddened. Wishing her all the very best as always

It’s okay for her to open her season regardless of the field !! It’s a start better than not showing . She came out of the blocks and just ran slowly…She ran faster than that in training. I am not utterly disappointed since it’s the first race.

I agree that more grace should be extended, but we have to be understanding of fans too. They’re basing their criticisms of her performance and especially that she has not performed in recent times. Fans were looking for a better performance. But I understand your point.

Different athletes do things differently, as do different coaches. Some will still be in heavy training and won't run fast, because their bodies are tires. Others will be out of that stage and working on race sharpness, they will hopefully be running a lot faster. The ones still in heavy training will want to race at some point to see where they are at, which gives them a better idea of when they need to transition out of heavy training. They will often want to run in a competitive race, i.e. with high level competition, so that they perform as well as they can. If Elaine entered an easier race, she may have run even slower and they wouldn't necessarily know if she had run as fast as she could at the moment. It's only May. Runners need to be fast enough in time for selection, but it doesn't take long at all for times to improve when the training is adjusted. Many athletes are choosing to stay in heavy training for as long as possible this year, so they can get as much benefit as possible from it, prior to the Olympics. This is more noteable with sprinters, because sprinting requires more power, so they benefits of working in the gym are more pronounced than for distance athletes, which is why many of the sprinters have been running slower than usual times this year, but that has been less aparent in longer distances. Think back to Tokyo. Lamont Marcel Jacobs had never run sub 10, prior to those Olympics, than ran 9.80 in the final, improving in each round. Obviously for some countries, athletes would need to be running faster than that in time for selection, but these are experienced athletes with even more experienced coaches, so they know what they are doing. Obviously mistakes can happen or things don't always go as planned, but for the most part people are race ready when they need to be.

@Neofolis I understand your points. I believe fans are just not accepting of her running last because of the fact that she's an elite athlete. Back to back double sprint champion. On another front, fans had not see her for a while and they wanted to see her more in the 1, 2, 3, spots. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Shericka and gabby are obviously still in heavy training. I think Shacarri may have got off heavy training after her 200m performances in China. But she probably got off heavy training for now so that she could be fast for trials. Because she doesn’t have the luxury of running the bare minimum and qualifying for the Olympics especially this year.
