In London groups of friends tend to support a variety of teams. I am a West Ham season ticket holder, my wife is Arsenal and my best man was Spurs. In the North a lot of friends/social groups will support the same team so they 'build' to the match together all week. I first start thinking about the game a couple of hours before kickoff. That said London got some massive stadiums (West Ham, Arsenal, Tottenham) and they are full every week regardless of how the teams are doing, so you still got loyal fans.

I think there’s a lot more socio-economic nuance to this conversation that just “NORTH VS SOUTH” 😂 i think it’s more about classes, albeit the North is more working class than the South, but this isn’t an exclusive rule. West Ham is more of a working class team than say Chelsea. Crystal Palace is more of a working class team than say Arsenal. Ultimately, there’s more similarities than differences.

Clubs in the south have generally become more family friendly, so the crowds reflect that. I know of hardcore fans being banned for barely anything. Only 2 clubs have ever had crowds of over 30,000 in all 4 divisions and they are from the south. A lot of clubs in the south outside of London have barely won much at all compared to the north, but still have good followings.

It's true that northern fans are more passionate than southern, but that's not always a good thing. As a Southampton fan, I always thought that we generally avoided relegation every year because the fans weren't as bothered and so the players played with a bit of freedom. Newcastle/Sunderland/Boro's fans cared far more and that held the team back when it comes to the key games in April/May. In key moments it just means too much sometimes.

Northern cities are grounded working class. There is a seige mentality in cities like Liverpool and Newcastle. There's currently Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham, Palace, Fulham, Brentford and Luton all having "derbies" Liverpool and Everton have eachother United and City have eachother Newcastle have nobody Sheffield United have nobody It may seem mad, but i think London clubs could just have too many rivalries to deal with makingt them feel less important.

What does derby matches have to do with who's more passionate North vs South? I could just say all those northern teams bar City have louder, passionate fans compared to the south teams at home games. Chelsea and Fulham are like morgues. Arsenal and Spurs are dead quiet unless they're winning. West Ham is the only one I'll give a pass to. Great fan atmosphere at home games.

How many millions live in London? Compared to the millions in Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds and other major Northern Cities? London still have a larger population. Though in the North with have other minor cities and major towns. Look across Yorkshire and not just Leeds and Sheffield. Huddersfield,Bradford, Rotherham, Barnsley, Hull, York etc Such a large area with everyone spread out. Also got Rugby League to deal with aswell. Far superior in the North. It's real. I see they started off talking about success. In terms of success, The North West is the Powerhouse of English Football, always has been, always will be. Even ignoring the likes of Blackburn who were founding members of the Football League, and have 3 Titles (1 in the PL era), Manchester & Liverpool have almost 3 x the Titles that London has. 57 Vs 21.

Football is too diluted in London. There’s what 14 teams in the prem and championship. Then more in the lower leagues. In the north football is all that have and at most the cities have two teams. Sure Arsenal probably have more fans in London than the other London clubs combined but still it’s diluted a lot.
