Trimming out the porches continues with unseasonably warm weather as we welcome the New Year. In this episode we install custom aluminum porch column wraps from AFCO Industries. AFCO is a 75 year old, 100% employee owned American manufacturer in Louisiana. They are the ONLY domestic column and railing manufacturer that extrudes their own aluminum products. Everything is finished with an AMAA 2604 powder-coat paint, offered in seven different finishes.
Part of AFCO’s Traditions Series of Aluminum Columns, the Natchez is based on a traditional, site-built box column design with the cap and base aesthetics of a “one by” wrap capped with 163 Base Trim molding. These have the same matching powder-coat finish of the Aluminum AFCO-Rail products.
This product can be used to wrap an existing post like in our project or as a stand-alone, structural post. Without any additional support, the Natchez column can support up to 20,000 lbs. of dead-loading depending on the width of the column.

Looks like a million bucks! Water will find its way inside the aluminium cover and probably there will also be condensation, so if I were you, I'd leave at least one side of the bottom uncaulked, so that it can run out.

Another thing the ends can be used for is to hide the pots of plants, or they could be used as planters if they had a bottom installed. Best wishes for the new year.

Historically the only type of wood preservative you could get for construction lumber was a cupperic-oxide solution (copper), either painted on the surfaces or infused via pressure treating. Now with all these "safer" chemicals, copper can't even touch our pressure treated boards? Crazy. Great video as always.

The bases you can glue on with urethane sealant. You don't need the JB Weld. OSI works well and comes in bronze. Caulk behind it, at the joint, then across the top and the bottom. Put masking tape on it until it sets up and it's good to go.
@matthewsteitz7296
@matthewsteitz7296 2 жыл бұрын
Nice job, the material looks solid. I would suggest leaving a weep hole at the base so any water from condensation has an escape route. That aluminum will probably condensate in the sunny areas and the water needs an escape route.
@baseballhunk723
@baseballhunk723 2 жыл бұрын
Since you sealed the bottoms, how did you(will you) seal the tops of the posts in case any rain drives in and hits the tops?
@jamest5149
@jamest5149 2 жыл бұрын
A suggestion, drill a weep hole in the bottom of your post trims… I would not have sealed the bottoms, any water that make it’s way in the top of the posts will now fill up the post trims.
@zeninsyt
@zeninsyt 2 жыл бұрын
Here in Canada, the temperature gets much lower and has a wider range than where you are, so aluminum is not as popular due to the expansion and contraction that sometimes reveals seams and gaps ;) Your application looks great :)
@practicalguy973
@practicalguy973 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. I've seen covering wood posts with aluminum turn into a disaster some years down the road. I think even Mike Holmes show had an entire sub division that all had that issue with relatively new homes. Metal with the different expansion rates than concrete water gets in it can't get out and then there will be hidden rot at the base.

I am about to install these and I thought hte JB weld was a good idea. Wouldn't you want to JB weld the top caps while they rest on the bottom ones, then slide them up into positions to screw them as a surround to top of column? Seems like it would be hard to get the mitered corners aligned with screwing them two pieces separately. Do you think that is reasonable approach?

I know the railings you are about to install will be around the porch but do you intend to also put a banister (or whatever it is called) next to those beautiful stairs? As an elderly person I could not possibly make those stairs without holding on to something. Believe me when you are old you will want to hold on to something going up the stairs.

Interesting product. Two questions... 1) are you going to drill a drain hole at the base of each post? You can be 100% certain that water will eventually get in, the trick is to ensure it can get out. 2) Did you consider fitting only three sides of the post cladding before putting the handrails on to allow access for packing and general adjustment?
@Guildbrookfarm
@Guildbrookfarm 2 жыл бұрын

Hi, I have a question about porch posts. I need to replace my porch floor (w/pvc boards) and posts (w/cedar). Do the post rest on top of the TnG boards with solid blocking underneath or do they need to go through the floor and rest on the brick pillars? Thanks so much! Btw, you are a fantastic teacher!
@Guildbrookfarm
@Guildbrookfarm Жыл бұрын
Posts usually sit on solid footers and deck boards are notched out around the posts.
@rrezartbeqa83
@rrezartbeqa83 Жыл бұрын
@@Guildbrookfarm thank you for your reply! So in my case, with the brick pillars coming up few feet - I would just drill and install post brackets and fasten the cedar posts on to the brackets, correct? Should I wrap the bottom of the cedar posts with any flashing tape to protect them from moisture or just seal the bottoms of the posts?
@Guildbrookfarm
@Guildbrookfarm Жыл бұрын
Porch posts/columns that hold up a roof need to be on footings. Railing posts bolt to the decking with blocking beneath. No need to treat cedar but I would use a good oil based penetrating stain.
