I live in Kansas 6b and if there was one plant I wish I could have is a lorapetlum. I have one area in my garden I have thought about testing the boundaries. I’d have to drive south of the border to find one 😜.

I'm in Charlotte. The deer continually ate my dystilium and for Ed me to move them to safety in the back yard. All deer are different but I would not recommend for those with high deer pressure.

I think that chefs choice rosemary does well in 7b. I see it pretty often. Every spring I also see gardeners filling up their shopping carts with lavender here in the Deep South. It’s pretty much doomed. :-)

Been there -done that, even in the Charlotte area. Aggravates me no end when unsuitable plants are sold at the big box stores that simply aren’t suited to the area.

I've tried lavender twice in Kentucky, Zone 6B. Both times, my plants died despite being in full sun haha. Our soil is just too heavy I think.

Thanks to all the people who commented on growing lavender in the south. Would love to grow lavender, but have tried twice and that’s it for me here in Virginia. And, having gardened for about twenty years here, I feel the same as the person who replied about big box stores that carry plants that just won’t thrive in the area in which they are sold. Plants are very expensive now and it’s a big investment to have it fail.

I hope you have better luck with the rosemary than I have had. I live in zone 8b and lost my chefs choice in the arctic blast this year. I had replanted it from the previous year which I had lost some but not all to freezing temps. It had been planted on the south-facing side of my home and got plenty of sun. Can’t wait to see if yours makes it. Thank you always for these informational videos.

Oh, how I WISH I could visit your nursery!! I have learned so much by watching your channel! If ever I am in your area, it's a definite YES to stop by! By the way, you know how y'all sometimes have trouble getting the camera to focus in on something? I may be wrong, or it may be just my camera, but try a gentle tap on your screen where you want it to focus and see if it doesn't focus in on what you want folks to see. It works like a charm on my camera. Take care and Happy Gardening! 🌷🌼🌸

However, I only have a balcony for plants. I think I remember you saying that a relative that is in the same situation and gardens in containers. Could you do a video on the plants that can be grown in containers. Interested in perennials like the new azalea that can grow in pots. Thank you.

In greenville sc zone 7b sunshine ligustrum is a beast that I have to cut back twice a year to keep it under 4 feet tall and is not evergreen for me and in the winter looses most of its leaves. I’ve have it in the ground for over 5 years.

I just came by and purchased 13 of your beautiful shrubs today. Met your hubby but you were busy chatting with customers. Maybe I’ll meet you next time. I’m trying to fix a 70 yr old landscape that was dug up. I’ve planted 55 shrubs so far. I live 7 miles from you honey but did not know your nursery existed. Jenny I’ll be back all year buying your beautiful products. I’m in heaven finding out you are just down the road. This fall I need 9 Evergreen Shrubs to make an instant natural fence. 10 ft tall and maybe bird friendly like hollies etc. Do you guys have shrubs that mature and do you deliver and plant? Thank you for making my Saturday bright. I watch all your videos and found you by way of You Tube.

Thanks for all the great advice. I love all the evergreen choices. What would you put if you wanted a more English garden front landscape but want color interest in the winter as well? I need to redo my front. My house sits high off the ground (1860 farm house with front porch deep and as wide as the house and 8ft wide steps, 8 steps high). On both sides of the railing I have a camelia that is in terrible shape, Azalea that need to go with deep roots and lots of open space.

I’ve been gardening over 40 plus years and find if a plant zone is on your heat zone Border, I do morning sun maybe a little early afternoon. I try to avoid the 2pm forward time and make sure they are in light shade area in late afternoon. If your shade is too dark just take off lower tree limbs to give you a high canopy shade.

What foundation shrubs would you recommend for under a low window with a deep flower bed in zone 7B? The previous owners did azaleas, heavenly bamboo and day lilies but they're all looking terrible. The drainage isn't great and I can't build up the bed because it's already directly under the house siding. Anything out there that loves clay, poor drainage, full sun and stays under three feet 😬

When you dig your hole try adding Espoma Land and Sea with your native soil you take out of that hole. Do native soil at 75% and Espoma Land and Sea at 25% ratio. Plant your shrubs with the top of the root ball soil 2” above ground Then top dress with a good hardwood mulch that’s triple ground. If you have to buy mulch in the bags and can’t go to Jenny’s nursery, then get it from Lowe’s. They have Hardwood Mulch and you can see through the bag to see that “It’s Not Bark Chips”. You do Not want Bark Chips and don’t buy the color dyed mulch. By the way Candy Corn Double Play Spirea by Proven Winters loves Sun in Zone 7B and grows 2 ft tall. It’s Beautiful in bloom and out. I know I planted 16 of them and they made it through the Arctic blast and this last freeze. I do plan on covering them Sunday because they are so so beautiful right now and I’m not going to take a chance. They are hardly from Zone 4 through Zone 9. Candy Corn leaves start out red and transition to a pineapple yellow. They bloom in summer. Even when they transition to pineapple yellow, some leaves will be bright lime green and some will be red. From distance it’s looks like it’s flowering even when it’s not in bloom due to the variation of the changing leaf color. Forgot to say they are cold hardy but I’m covering because they are newly planted with new tender leaves. Next year I should not have to cover

Hi Jenny! I found your channel through your visit to Laura and Aaron of Garden Answer and so glad I did! I live in 7a (Virginia, hi neighbor!) and I'm so happy to have found a channel focusing on plants and growing conditions more similar to my own. I love Garden Answer but their conditions are so very different, as you well know. My question for you today is about the Lorapetalum. I have plans to add these to the front foundation planting of my house facing Northeast and along a retaining wall facing South. Would you provide information on pruning? I've seen them sheared into balls but that doesn't seem to be their natural growth habit. I'm aiming for low maintenance shrubs that are the right size for the location. I've chosen Purple Diamond for the front foundation and Ruby for the retaining wall where a larger specimen would be welcomed. Thank you so much for your videos and any advice you can offer!
