Thank you Claire for a very honest review. I really appreciate all your reviews because they always mirror what I like and what I look for in a book/product. I personally do not think I will buy this book because it looks like the artwork has been half finished and as you say rushed. Keep up the good work and thank you for all the lovely technique videos they have really helped me. I'm still completing my colour charts - terribly slow process for me. xx

I am so sad for Kerby Rosanes I feel bad for him. I wish the editors would let artist be. I think next time he should have down it as Kickstarter instead so that he has more creative control. I think I’ll just stick with his older ones honestly

I think you summed it up perfectly. It just felt generic to me, and all the love and passion for the art was gone. I returned mine, not because of the cut down content, but because of the images only 2 or 3 felt like Kerby and none of them made me excited to color. I miss the doodles.

I haven't bought the book. There is a few images that I really like but not enough to justify the cost. I don't mind the single sided pages, it would give me a chance to use markers. I think the book should have at least 25 pages.

Thanks for sharing this Claire, I had this book on preorder fully expecting it to be like his other work, which I love! But I managed to catch sneak peeks of the pages before it shipped. I cancelled my order. This book is heartbreaking. I was wondering why it seemed so incomplete and unlike Kerby’s artistic style, this definitely explains it and shows what happens when you don’t let an artist “fly free”. Unfortunately I don’t think I will be adding this to my collection. But I did order myself a second copy of Imagimorphia cause I just love his first three books so much, lol. Might have to get a duplicate of Mythomorphia too. 😉❤️🌹❤️🌹

Something very dark must has happened in Kerby's life for him to produce this as dark as it is. Yes, is a complete shock as it is no where near the Kerby we know and love. As its a one off, he must have experienced something in this era that shows in his works here blessed be. I will still enjoy colouring these amazing pages. Maybe bringing these pages life may change that negative darkness into light. Blessed be. Thank you Claire & Kerby Rosannes xxx💜🙏🙏🙏😪😊

Thanks for the review, Claire. I can always count on you to be honest and give an unbiased opinion. I’ve cancelled my order. It is with a heavy heart, as he is my favourite illustrator, but it’s as if these images have come from the reject pile from previous books, been rehashed and then deliberately un-Kerby-fied. If he’d been tied in for a 5-book deal (which he wasn’t) I might have been more sympathetic, but he could easily have pulled the plug on these last two books. Such a shame.

I completely understand and agree with your and others' reviews about this book. But, on a positive note, i actually do like the shading... it's kind of like coloring grayscale. And I also like that it's single-sided because I can use watercolors or alcohol markers with it. It is certainly over-priced considering the amount of images. I will say, though, that it hasn't diminished my love of Kirby's work. Looking forward to the next one.

Very accurate review Claire. Some of the images are so very unmorphia it's surprising. I am one who would usually buy a new release on the strength of the artists previous books. I learned my lesson with Tomislav Tomic's Vilin San. This was also half the book for the same price although the image quality was equal to first book I felt cheated when I got it. Had I bought this one thinking it was like the others I would have been quite upset. So thank you for making such quick work of this review. After seeing the book for all it is I won't be getting it.

Thanks for your stellar in depth review. You just pointed out everything what I was feeling whilst watching the early flip throughs and then afterwards when I received my own item. I was only dissapointed but your review quite got it spot on why that feeling emerged in the first place. My copy was on pre-order and already shipped. The price was dropped to 7.99 EUR but I felt it still was to expensive for the content. When I claimed to return the book (cancelation was not available due to already shipped) Amazon Germany gave me a refund without wanting me to send it back (I guess regarding it's size it is not worth the postage and handling the full return process for Amazon). So now it's still sitting on the shelf and I don't now if I will ever feel the need to work in it.

I found this one so difficult to buy, emotionally that is. Same price as his others, for less quality and less images. BUT, at the same time Kerby Rosanes is my absolute favourite; few things inspire me to colour as much as his books does and I wholeheartedly want to support him. I won't mind colouring these images, but I will love my other Kerby books more. So making the decision to buy this book was difficult because on one hand I want to support the artist, on the other hand I don't want to support the editors that ties his hands like this. But I did go ahead and buy it, thinking that after all: if sales for his books are good, perhaps the success can spill over and aid him in getting the jobs he feels inspired to do. I truly wish him all the best on his future endeavours.

I preordered this book without thinking because I love the work that Kerby Rosanes does. I’ve never been disappointed by his books before but I agree with you, the whole book seems rushed and way out of his normal style that I love. If I’d seen a flip through I would have never of bought this book, which is a shame as a fan of Kerbys work. I feel sorry for Kerby having his creative freedom being a bit strangled by publishers with eyes on the profits. I’ll be hesitant to buy the next book - definitely will not pre order it.

I'm very torn and of two minds about this book. I just received my copy today and though it's not the type of book I would expect from Kerby Rosanes, there are aspects that I do like about it. Let me preface this by saying that the reason I started colouring is that I live with a severe mental illness and my doctor and therapist recommended that I try colouring for mindfulness. It's helped me more than I can express and has been instrumental in helping me recover from the terrible place I was in a year ago. Generally my choice of book on any given day depends on how I'm feeling mentally, and having a "simpler" book from one of my favourite artists is something I am very happy about. The book isn't exactly cheap considering that it has so few illustrations, but I am alright with that as the paper is great quality and I do love the illustrations and theme. I own all three of his previous colouring books and Animorphia and Imagimorphia can be a struggle to colour sometimes for me as the extreme morphing can get a bit overwhelming when I am having a difficult time concentrating and the noise inside my head is overwhelming. Mythomorphia struck the "sweet spot" for me with less morphing and a few single pages mixed in with the two-page spreads and a good mix of difficulty levels (in my opinion, at least). With this book, the lack of backgrounds and less complex, nearly greyscale images I can colour pictures from one of my favourite artists when my mind simply won't focus enough to work on something more complicated. I was hoping that this would be a gothic version of Mythomorphia and it's obviously not, so that is a huge disappointment. However, I am going to keep the book and colour it when I want to be able to complete a picture in one sitting. My fingers are crossed that Geomorphia will not suffer the same way Fantomorphia did, but for now I am just going to take the book for what it is and enjoy it in its own way.

More than anything I would love another book similar to Mythomorphia as far as image complexity and 2 page spread to single page ratio, but I think I read somewhere that Geomorphia is going to be another single-sided book. My fingers are crossed that it has more images and is a bit truer to Kerby's style...but I don't have much hope to be honest. *Edit* The biggest disappointment is having only the front half of the wolf that appears on the cover actually inside the book to colour. There is obviously a back half (as it's on the back cover, heh) and this is a half-arsed (ha...ha...) thing for the publisher to do to fans :/

Hi Claire, I understand how difficult it must be to do a negative review but you did it well and thank you. I received my copy yesterday after having it on pre order for ages. I have gotten some dud books in my time but never have I felt so betrayed, let down and, frankly, so ripped off and taken advantage of before. I also feel sad for the artist as it damages his name to present such a poor quality product to his expectant fans. I agree with everything you’ve said, so diplomatically put. I can’t help thinking this book should never have happened but I’ll leave the reasons that it did happen for others to decide. Regards from Sandra @colouritinn.

Just an added note. I have other books with very dark areas and I’ve found using Coliro aka Finetec metallic paints give a wonderful cover even over dark areas esp as this is a one sided book which becomes a bonus. Admittedly you need to see them in the light but they still look fantastic. I think I might try this with this book. Gold effects would certainly add to the colouring in certain pages in my very humble opinion.🎨

I was so disappointed in the book when it arrived, I feel it was a waste of my very limited resources. I do like some single sided pages allowing for multimedia materials and the paper is a really good quality. However, I'm bitterly disappointed in most of the images, I'll find many of them terribly difficult to work on. Yes, there are a few that I'm excited to try. I'm really hoping the publisher will pay attention to reviews like yours and reactions like mine. And now I'll have to pay double for the rest of the book when it comes out in October.

Kerby needs to go the route of Bennett Klein. Self publish, own site...... so disappointing that he was not allowed to flex his considerable artistic talent with this book. Shame on the publisher and editors, they really “screwed the pooch” for this amazing artist. If they have 2 brain cells to rub together, they need to let him have control of the second half of this book. Let him do what he does best, and show his signature style without constraint!

I agree with the below comment. As an artist I understand how the industry works. If an artist is self published they can publish as and when they want to. If an artist like Kerby is with a specialist publisher then he will be contracted to do so many books. Looking at the flip through it's obvious Kerby doesn't want to to do the final 2 books and has clearly just gathered cast offs from his previous books to make a 'new" book. Not all images make it into a colouring book. Many of my works I'm doing for my 1st book I've held back from publishing for another book.

He was finished at Mythomorphia and said that was his last book... can only infer that he decided to re-contract for another two. What gets me most is how 90% of the images don’t even have his signature style, they could be from any illustrator :/

I'm really sad about how this book turned out. I'm still going to buy it, but maybe a few months down the line if the price drops or if I can get a good coupon and pick the book up at a store somewhere. I love the artwork in the book, but you can tell it was rushed by the publisher and that they wanted to put a second book out later this year with the other 19/20 images as a cash grab. I really hope that Kerby Rosanes won't stop making coloring books after this, but I do hope he finds a publisher that lets him have a bit more say.

Even though I think the artwork is amazing in all his books, I've shied away from buying them because to me they seem very daunting with so much detail that it overwhelms me to think about coloring. I actually have some other books with a lot of shading and some stuff already darkened that I like to color because it's faster and easier for me. So this might be one that I'd buy. I do agree that it shouldn't cost the same as the other books if there are less pictures to color. But, I like that it's single sided and just seems easier to color. Maybe he was just going for something different, or maybe the publishers rushed him to produce content quicker than he was able. Thanks for the review!

I had cancelled my pre order of this because I’d missed some work and needed to watch money for a few weeks. I’m sad to say, seeing the reviews and the final product I’m glad I cancelled it. There is no way I’m paying that much per page for a coloring book unless it is the size and quality of a “Serene.” Im probably going to take a pass on this one. Imagimorphia is my favorite of his and I’ve barely made a dent in it. I’d rather re-purchase one of his older books to color again that buy a half book.

I also like using Prismacolor Pencils. I have a small set of Prismacolor markers but for the most part I enjoy using Crayola markers for his books. With the single sided images I dont have to worry about bleed through or anything like that. So personally for me I love all of Kerbys books. I still enjoy your video and I do understand why some people won't like them. However I personally love them. His imagination is great. I also enjoy Johanna Basford and Millie Marottas coloring books :) Hope you're doing well. Take care.

It's so fun and relaxing, even though there's still much to learn for me xD Kerby rosanes books are so beautiful and I fell in love with his work instantly! But I honestly don't know what to think about Fantomorphia. The pictures are okay imho. Of course no chance against mythomorphia, but I don't want to compare these books because I don't know if he was in a hurry or if he's just trying a new style. But I kinda feel tricked by the cover. It is so beautiful and looks like what we expect from Kerby. I thought there were more pictures like this... The half wolf inside really disappointed me as well. (Sorry If my English isn't perfect. I agree with you 100%, I was incredibly let down with the sheer lack of content and lack of design, especially for the price. As for the book in October, I have no intentions of pre-ordering it and I will not buy it until someone reviews it, it will have to be a really stellar book like the 3 previous with more content to make up for what this one lacked. It's a shame really as we realize he did just want his publisher wanted, and now you can clearly see by it's ranking of 2.5 stars that there will most likely be less people buying it meaning it's going to end up in a discount store sooner than one might expect.

Claire just for a price point comparison, in NZ, colouring books are about $25-$35 , for the likes of Hanna Karlzon, Johanna Basford and Kirby Rosannes etc, $25 NZD is roughly $18 USD or £12 (if I've worked it out correctly). It cost me over $60 NZD to get a copy of Serene.. 😣

Alycia Burke Hi Alycia, Just saw your comment about the price of colouring books in NZ. I used to live in Australia and its the same there, with all books being very expensive. I used to order books from Amazon uk, until they stopped free delivery to oz on orders over 25gbp. Then i used book depository, which has free worldwide delivery, so worked out cheaper than amazon. I know people like supporting local businesses, however, why should you bother if the rip off is blatant?! If they’re doubling the price, they can’t use distance as an excuse, it’s unfair on consumers and counting on them wanting to remain loyal while they rip people off. I went on holiday to nz last year, and beautiful place, although i was shocked at the cost of everything, even in comparison to expensive Australia. Sorry for the long msg, just wanted to tell you that you can get cheaper from overseas.

I usually never comment on KZfaq videos, but had to, because I just bought my copy of Fantomorphia today. And because something about it felt weird to me, I had to refer back to this video. So, the Finnish editions don't usually have the search and find element, and my Fantomorphia doesn't have either. What I do have is 17 extra images, including the one that shows up as the cover for Kerby's next book (the polar bear). Wonder what that is about, not that I'm complaining.

Yes, I'm glad to not have pre-ordered this book. I don't have a problem with the dark or black parts in it, but to me it's nothing you imagine when you think about "Kerby Rosanes". I heard rumors that the book has only this many/less pages, because another book "geo morphia(?)" will be published in october and that's what the publishers wanted him to do. So usually it would have been a book in size we know, but the publisher wanted to make two out of it. I'm very dissapointed and I won't buy this book and I don't understand why it has the same price as the other ones. I like that there are single sided images, so people can use markers if they like, but I just don't get why there is not a single double-sided-spread. The cut-offs you mentioned on the top of the sides are really incredible within every other issues. I looked up the colouring from +Dede Willingham today, but she seems to have the same version as you or all versions have this issue. But she managed to make a good picture out of the boring tree.

oh, I commented before I heard the last things you said. Therefore the book really is unusual for Kerby, I think it's maybe true that the publisers had their hands into the pictures so deeply and just wanted to make money with his name. Tbh, I feel, he shouldn't have done it like this. I'm sure someone else would have offered him something near what he got for this, and he could have made another great book to make his fans happy. That way it feels like an very careless "good bye", although I'm sure it's not meant like this in any wayl from Kerby, and he maybe is as upset about it by himself, as many fans are.

Your thoughts on this book match mine exactly. Except I have a few more gripes. Such as one of the butterflies on the skull page is unfinished? The top ring of the clock also looks unfinished. The page with the beetles, is one of the worst imo. I didn't mind it at first, till I looked closer. The facets on the gems are a mess. There is no way they can be colored properly.

I agree with everything you said, except I did like a couple of the images you did not care for. That is so sad the publisher did this, it is kind of like it all ends on a sour note with everything previously from Kirby being amazing. The paying twice for a half book is definitely not good. I wonder if they are going to take all the 'Kirby' out of the last book also? I get my book tomorrow and I am not nearly as excited as I would normally be for receiving a new Kirby Rosanes book :o(

What really upset me was the second edition I found now in June. It has double the amount of illustrations, but they are still dark and too detailed... And I'm not fond of having the illustrations only on one page... Because of this, we lose the entirety of the beautiful wolf, and several of the other pictures could have been better if they had been part of a double sided illustration...

This book caters to distress inks, watercolors, markers and chalk/pastels. If you know how to use them, this book is perfect for them. That's why the pages are thicker and shades are darker. Maybe people should learn other mediums and get off the pencils. Many people have posted completed Fantamorphia books using these mediums. They are AMAZING!!! Many have copied the back of the book for the back half of the wolf and added it to the drawing.. The artists are adding their own creativity..

I love the fact it is single sided, and it did not have all the little things in it to color. I don't mind only having 19 pages if there great pictures, but there not. Glad I seen your review before I wasted my money, I don't have much to waste.

I don't mind the black and shading too much as long as it doesn't start taking over every page, it can be a help if you don't feel like shading. However I hate that it's one sided, that's such a classic move to have less pages to colour, and I loved the storybook feel of the previous books. I am also really disappointed that the publishers decided to dictate everything to him so much that it has completely taken the unique creativity out of the art. And that wolf being cut off... It feels disrespectful to the buyer, really. Just ridiculous.

you know what i like about this book eventhough its not that much of illustration? 1. its only a few illustration so a lazy colorist like me this is a miracle! i could actually finish and complete all of these! (bear in mind i do own his previous books i barely completed half of the books and now its rest in peace in my shelf. I should probably try to complete those books since i spent lotsa money to buy em. 2. The one page blank its a huge improvement! now i can experiment with watercolour or related medium where i dont have to care about damaging the other pages (like his previous works) 3. The illustration is less complicated which is easier for me to colour and not become easily tired of the complexity! How brilliant is that! Plus all the 'simple' illustration for me is far way stunning! Less is more bitches...i meann huneeeyyyy!!! 4. I am huge fan, so as a fan i need to at least fan over this and keep supporting him. He is not GOD and hey no colouring books in this world is perfect! Definitely will grab my copy and will experiment with watercolour, acrylic, or maybe copic third parties or many moree!!!

I think Kirby was probably under some kind of contract & had no say. Almost forced to do this. I love most of the art. It does suck that some were cut off at the top. I don't agree with them being too dark. That is just my opinion. I have seen greyscale this dark or darker. I do like them being one-sided. Just wish there were more.

Well... the price, size of the book, briefs... ect... were not his decisions... but he still agreed to them. I had hoped it would still be great even with those restrictions i heard about... but i don't think his heart was in this book and it shows. I just hope the coloring community would be more understanding of someone they love... we have no idea what heartbreak or sadness he experienced or went through when he made it. A little understanding and compassion goes a long way. Doesn't mean I'll buy this one... but those giving him a hard time are not taking the whole picture into account. Thanks for the info at the end, and it makes me joyful that he might move on from doing something he's not enjoying anymore to find something he can really get behind. One disappointing book does not take away all the great work he's done or will do... and I'm still a huge fan of him and will cherish my mythomorphia and imagimorphia books even more knowing they might be the last books i get of his. Thanks for a well done honest review Claire!

David Pollock I know about contracts... but you'd think someone such as Kerby with the clout of so many popular books would be given more of the decision making at this point. I'm a self published illustrator for this reason; when they wanted to take over all creative control i refused to sign over my work and instead did all of the hard work myself... finding a printing company, running a kickstarter campaign, packaging and shipping out every book myself. I know a little bit about the business... He could do the same as me if he chose... and make more profit and fans by following his creative vision instead of agreeing to these restrictive contracts in the first place. That said, like i said in my original comment... i do feel for him.

I totally agree. I also don't like putting everything on the publishers either. That seems so "scape goaty" to me. The one thing he could have done no matter what is let people know it is different than the others. If this was a book I had no expectations for and didn't pre-order it would be a much different story.

I still love his work and this book, though different, doesn’t disappoint me. Even dark areas can be coloured and now with it being on single pages I can use watercolour. I think we’ve been spoiled by the previous work. Every artist has off times, we need to support the artist through those times if we want the artist not to give up. The wolf is a joke, though.

Thanks for your excellent review, I love his other books, but won’t be buying this one. There are three or four pictures I like, but not worth buying for that. Very disappointing, and I find it quite incredible that a publisher can have so much control over an artists particular style of work. Perhaps the next book out will have the back half of the wolf!

I heard that his publisher is making him publish 2 smaller books instead of another big one. So he can't help that! So I think you could have brought all that up in the beginning. I got mine at Barnes and Noble just this month. There it was cheaper that his other bigger books.

I could not agree with you more, Claire. With all due respect to Kirby, I know this was not all his fault. With that said, this being below HIS standards, this could have been the project he should not have accepted. My biggest issue was the price of course. $10.80 in the USA. 19 pages to color. I paid under $10 for Mythomorphia and that has 76 pages to color. FOUR times the pages and Fantomorphia costing more???? NO WAY! It is true I appreciate single sided pages. I hear the paper is excellent. Those are the ONLY good points. Mythomorphia is the only book I care for. There were a number of images in Fantomorphia that resembled Imagimorphia....ugh. Some resembled Animorphia. Very little resembled Mythomorphia. And the page of bugs? Hanna Karlzon???? Really??? Not a book I want at all, sorry to say. Ohhh, and the wolf? Another resembling Animorphia and image cut off too? Totally unacceptable.
