Muzzle loading firearms, even newly manufactured ones, aren't designed to use smokeless powder. If you attempt to use smokeless powder in a muzzle loading firearm you will probably destroy the firearm and risk personal injury. The manual will usually specify BLACK POWDER ONLY.
@jeremya673910 жыл бұрын
I agree, but with an addendum. Modern manufactured replicas of cap & ball firearms (muzzleloading rifles, 1860 Colt & 1858 Remington Revolvers, etc...) should never be used with smokeless powder despite their modern metallurgy. Generally if the powder goes in separately from everything else it should be black powder only.
@CertifiedHustler6810 жыл бұрын
I tried smokeless powder on my left nipple and black powder on my right. My studies have shown that both powders function optimally when put through the twist test, the pick and flick, and the one-man double reach-around.

G'day! Just to add a comment, black powder is technically an explosive where as smokeless is a propellant. I use bp when I run short on emulsion on small blasting jobs.(extremely expensive proposition in bulk not like the 1800's) It is also the basis of low pressure explosives in mine rescue applications where a trapped party may have to endure blast effects in a confined space, having said that thanks for the vid! Interesting

I used Dupont smokeless bulk powder instead of black powder when I was a kid. It was a roughly granulated green powder that was much cleaner to shoot in a percussion shotgun. Probably not too safe, but I kept the loads moderate.

Hickok, thanks, it's good to share this information. As you implied, it's not an ideal choice but what's the saying, "Desperate times call for desperate measures?" Well, if one found themselves in a serious pickle then such knowledge could be critical if improvisation is required. Take care.

Hello Hickok, I love your videos and can't wait for the next new one. You are also a smart businessman, recording videos while on a vacation trip allows you to write it off on taxes as a business travel expense. Great scenery, but I would love to have your backyard shooting range; that gong must be fun? Keep up the great work.
@MattC062110 жыл бұрын
It would probably be valuable to add to this conversation that it is overwhelmingly a bad idea to use even a little smokeless powder in a muzzleloader. There is one (I think) manufacturer that makes a mz that can handle the higher pressures from smokeless, but 99% cannot. I've heard of some folks trying to use a 'booster charge' of smokeless to try to get higher velocities, but that can blow up your gun and potentially seriously injure yourself or someone else. Please don't do that.

Don't forget that Black powder is better with a full case. You always want your Bullet seated against black powder... or you can get a real bang out of it. Note some reloading data calls for wading in black powder or reloads with shotgun powders. 45-70 for example... people use reduced loads of 2400 ,Clays, unique... some the loading data calls for fillers.
@Ratkill900010 жыл бұрын
Smokeless gives you more bang for your buck. Blackpowder if you light it with a match or open flame it explodes, smokeless will just burn. I haven't tried it but I saw Gunnery Sargent R. Lee Emery do it on his TV show Lock n Load.

Oww, that leaning on the cactus looked a bit painful, unless the spines were worn off...but good into, though I always figured that older guns were made by spinning and forging iron on a mandrel, and that could cause problems with the higher power smokeless, and conversely the mess black powder will make in a modern gun.

Please, all of you may take into consideration that if you load a cartridge not completely up to the bottom of the bullet with black powder (or any surrogate of it) - that is you have some "free space" in the load - you may face some not expected overpressure by firing this cartridge. This is due to the strange behaviour of black powder and company. General rule: No air in the cartridge! If you leave no space in the load the pressure of black powder is way below modern "smokeless" powders. If you leave a space it may blow up your gun and someone who is next to it...

How did you like passing through our desert state? In AZ we don't have to have a permit to CC or OC. Though a CCW permit still does have it's advantages in this state. On an unrelated topic, I would like to see you do another video on throwing tomahawks. It has been a while since you covered this. Also I would like to know how you rate the Ruger RS1911 vs the Springfield RO. I know you ended up buying the Ruger, but what I hear, the Ruger reviews are about half and the Springfield are near 100% good. If you could paint the sights on the SA, would you choose that over the Ruger? I am not looking for a carry 1911, just a range 1911.
