Today’s Cybersecurity Lesson: Making the Case for a Faraday Phone Case
A Faraday Phone Case is the perfect accessory for the Cybersecurity Aware. As you go out and about town, you can be confident no one is scanning your phone.
But how does it work?
Just like the Faraday Cage it’s named after, the Faraday Phone Case is made out of materials that have strong electromagnetic shielding. The primary material is often a woven metal fabric, such as copper or nickel-coated polyester. These metals have high conductivity and can effectively block electromagnetic signals.
When you slip your phone into a Faraday case, it essentially becomes isolated from the outside world.
This translates to a number of benefits that will enhance your cybersecurity, including:
Signal Blocking. The case prevents both incoming AND outgoing signals, including cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, and NFC.
Silent and Dark. You can maintain your privacy by preventing remote access to your phone’s sensors including the microphone and camera. In other words, your device can’t be used to spy on you.
Cyber Attacks. Faraday cases can help safeguard your phone against certain remote hacking techniques, such as mobile signal interception and relay attacks.
RFID Skimming If you slip your credit cards and passport into the case, you also don’t have to worry about someone skimming that personal information stored on the RFID chips, stealing your identity and your money.
You may have your security locked down at home, but it’s another kind of challenge to be secure in public places. Especially when you’re traveling, using a Faraday case adds an extra layer of security. GPS signals are blocked, which means your location is hidden. The case prevents your phone from connecting to unsecured networks, or being vulnerable to various cyber attacks. But remember, it’s important to practice other safe digital habits as well, like using strong passwords and being cautious of suspicious links or downloads.

But you also can't receive messages or calls... Isn't it simpler to just turn your phone off?

I guess the cellphone must also be put in airplane mode to prevent battery drain or simply be shut off. Leaving it on in the case, would mean that it would always try to find a GSM signal and constantly adjust its power to do so.
@haqvor

Just putting it in airplane mode should theoretically do the same thing as putting it in a Faradays cage, with the condition that you depend on the precise implementation of your phones airplane mode. There is of course also the obvious problem that some gadgets that are sold as being a "Faradays cage" is just an expensive plastic bag that does nothing, but that is a problem with relying on any product that are sold with arguments based on peoples hopes and fears have. (Products in this context very much includes ideas and information that you "buy" with your time, attention and looking at ads)

I already do this where I work because there aren't many places I get service. I just keep the phone on airplane mode to stop the battery drain.

@@haqvor I doubt that airplane mode would do anything if your intention is to prevent things like tracking or being detected. Even with the tiniest amount of battery it will still attempt to find signals. If you buy a cage I would try calling the phone inside to check how effective it is. Even then you can never be one hundred percent sure
@haqvor
@haqvor 5 ай бұрын
@@cipher3966 that is why I said that it is implementation dependent, you are absolutely right if you are in a situation where it is vital that your phone is not able to send or receive any radio signals you can not depend on any hardware or software that you don't have control over, the only option is have to have a physical barrier that isolates it from the outside world. The obvious safest option is to not bring your phone at all. You also have to take into account that even the perfect copper lined pouch is not a proper Faradays cage as it is not connected to ground. As with all security related issues in the end it is about risk management. What risks are there, what is the cost (not only monetary) if they are manifested, how likely is it that they happen and which tradeoffs are you able and willing to make to mitigate them. From a security standpoint phones are a nightmare and the app companies that track their users is making the situation worse than it needs to be.

Turning off the phone is cheaper, and even cheaper carrying a brick instead a phone.

I have one of these 'Faraday cage' pouches. I don't use it. You can't get incoming calls. You have to reveal your location whenever you make an outgoing call. You must remember to turn off your phone or it will drain the battery quickly. I use a GPS based app that tracks my bicycle rides so I can't use it there. I think this kind of security is useful if you use it all the time and if it's used in large enough numbers that surveillance has little payback.

For everyone joking "you can turn it off" - turning it back ON is really slow. With this, you take your phone out, use it, put it back.

Some say turn phone off. Most phones still monitor when off. A faraday case may be un-needed for some but if you do need it you understand this video.

For the naysayers in the comment section, when in airplane mode and even turned off your phone is still sending and receiving signals. Do some research.

I did and you're wrong. When the phone is turned off it stops sending signals.

I really can't see the practicallity. Of course having a connection machine completely disconnected is safer, but why have it if it's isolated? The whole purpose is defeated by the security. I guess we're getting there with our other devices as well, where the security measures make them impractical to use anymore... We'll be back on pen and paper soon at this pace. And yes. If you're going to put it in a Faraday case, you might as well turn it off and save the battery and heat of the system trying franticly to find a signal.

Information security engineer here. No, but this kind of short videos is of course not able to do more than barely skim the surface. The usefulness of this format can be discussed, it can make people interested to find more information, on the other hand the limitations can make it a bit sensationalist and misleading without more info. (and Socratia can't take criticism and are notably absent in the comment field, I have had several comments deleted) This will make your phone useless and means no incoming calls or messages, but on the other hand no one can track you or hack your phone either. You will have to decide if that is a tradeoff you are willing to make when you are in high threat environments. I'm not sure how much just putting the phone in airplane mode will differ, but in that case you are depending on the specific implementation of your phone. Using something like this for your credit cards and other rfid cards is highly recommended, I have a metal card wallet that effectively shields them.

I was waiting for a punchline for a whole video. Should I write the app that would do the same as faraday case but for a half of a price? You know, I could learn how to turn off the phone from software.

@@DimaZheludko to be fair, theres a whole separate computer on the radio part of the phone. It's all closed source. If you were being targeted, it's not unreasonable that this could be comprised or backdoored and user to transmit even if you turned the phone off or put it on airplane mode.

@@roflchopter11 That's why detachable batteries were a good thing. Just take it away and you're sure there is no shady business inside. As a bonus, battery drain cuts to zero.

So basically turn off your phone to reduce risks connected to having a phone. I'm all for teaching good cyber security habits but this is not even remotely practical. For the people that need extended security they already know what to do, or have people that take care of that for them.
