Farewell 40's Circa 1983 - Manchester Area

Here is a treat of some rare old VHS footage. Class 25's, 31's, 40's, 45's, 47's and more shot in 1983 around the Manchester area. This is not my footage and I can't recall where I got this from (quite a few years ago) so if you are the original owner then please contact me for full credit or if you want it removing.

I stopped trainspotting after the death of the deltic, i didnt ever think back then that all these other great beasts would disappear too, so thankyou for capturing these and sharing too

Thanks for adding this. It was great to watch. Manchester Vic was a great place to see some interesting locos and stock. They always had to thrash out of the station to get as much speed as possible heading up towards Miles Platting ! Best of all I thought were the shots taken from the bridge at Clegg Hall and this is the very place I spent many many hours from the late seventies to the early eighties with my mate 'Greeny'. There was a signal box and sidings there years ago but I have only seen them in pictures. Just visible in the background is the L&YR signal box at Smithy Bridge. This wonderful village icon is now but a memory having been ripped out and smashed to pieces a few years ago. In those days the whole of BR was like a giant version of a heritage diesel railway. Happy memories of much more interesting times.

Amazing.. loved the 40's..all the blue dirty diesels..I can smell the fumes from sitting in brute trollies..if only we had time travel..

Excellent video 🤠. I enjoyed seeing the older BR freight trains(workings). Especially with the older style wagons and even with a brake van 😁

Loved the 40 whistlers , those and the 37s where my favs, but I likes all diesels in those days. Superb but never to be repeated unfortunately

I have seen some of the engines I used to drive when I was at Stratford retired now but brings back memories I do miss the railway

Growing up in St Albans these were quite hard to see, just the odd one on east coast mainline but my parents dropped me at Manchester Victoria one day and I think I saw about 40 of them in one day.

If anyone is going to see this, can I ask what would have been the filming equipment? From a quick google search 1983 was when the first camcorder was released from sony, the Betamovie BMC-100P so this is all the information I have currently.

The magenta effect in part of your video was due to the camera not being white balanced properly with piece of white paper in front of the camera while white balancing.

Funny aint it! We had the 3 car class 158 trans pennine units not bad...then we had the awful class 185 units!!!!! which was effectively a 2 car unit!!!!! Enormous toilet and 1st class(why!!!) and now reverting to loco and carriages!!!!
