Granny's Garden

Granny's Garden

Күн бұрын

The 3 year plan to recover a neglected garden comes to an end and so does my KZfaq journey. I have documented 2 years and 2 months of the process - it took the Covid pandemic and lockdown to nudge me into wanting to document the process. We bought the house 4 years ago and spent 1 year reforming it, but every day I took my gardener's eye out into the garden to see what was going on. It was totally overgrown and unloved. As the seasons changed my "to-do" list got longer and longer and finally, house under control, I started ripping out dead plants and trees, treating diseased shrubs and trees, pruning and rejuvenating hot-messes and trying NOT to get hysterical. I also had to deal with major problems (as if taking down trees wasn't a major problem!!!), there was a very sick Cypress hedge - past the point of no return - on top of a very steep embankment. There were also invasive vines on EVERY fence perimeter on the property....a big headache to remove. I was faced with lawn die-back on a certain area of the lawn, but discovered a hidden patio underneath (WOW!!!). I created "Rooms" in the garden: The Woodland, The Shrub Border, The Rose Border, The Terraces and the Maceta Garden. I wanted year around interest or as near as I could get to it and I wanted colour and texture. All these new borders are in their infancy, but now it is just a waiting game (with lots of maintenance to keep me busy), but the design element has concluded and the recovery now is a work in progress. All this could have been achieved in less time but with more money spent and contractors brought in. Miguel and I wanted to show that it is possible to get it done in bite sized pieces doing the work ourselves (despite being pensioners). We only brought in a contactor to cut down the Russian Olive trees due to the nature and lack of stability of these trees....everything else was done by us.
The garden has afforded me the opportunity to show how to prune and recover many shrubs. Pruning is something I love and it has always been my strong point as a gardener - so I guess there are some advantages to buying a chaotic garden!
I would like to thank each and every one of you that has accompanied me over these last 2 years. It has been a real privilege. I will still post photos on Instagram - hopefully I will post more regularly there - but the KZfaq journey has come to an end.
Thank you for accompanying me on this journey.
"Hasta Siempre Amigos"

So sad to hear it’s your final video Una. I’ve learned so much from you, particularly on the pruning front - my shrubs are less scared of me now when I walk past with the hedge trimmers 😂. I love that you have been inspired by the videos. I think as we get older there is a real danger of slipping into a negative mindset where we wrap ourselves in cotton wool and feel we are past our sell by date. My Mum learned to play the piano at 70!!! You are never too old and you can always adapt your garden to suit your requirements. I have always been independent and while I love my husband helping, I don't need him to help. I can use chainsaws, electric drills just the same as he can. We just need to believe in ourselves! So keep gardening and keep pushing the limits!

@@GrannysGarden You're so right. I bought my mini hand-held chain saw because I saw you using one. Now I also have a 14" electric chainsaw that I use on occasion. I don't need my husband to do everything for me, but of course his help is appreciated. I like doing the work, and making the decisions, myself. I've always been very independent, and proud if it. You've helped me to make decisions though by giving me good information to use to make sections. I will always be grateful gor that. You said there are are plenty of gardening videos out there. You're right about that. What I made yours grab my attention first was that you're about my age and still not just gardening, but making informative videos about gardening, not just the "how to" but also the "why" in many cases. I can understand why you're done with the extra work required to put out the videos. I wouldn't mind cutting back on some work myself and spending more time in the garden.

Thanks Janette. Ever since our collaboration on my first Christmas on KZfaq a wonderful friendship developed and it will continue behind the scenes... Friends forever. I will probably take a few months off to enjoy the garden and my next grandson is due in November so no rest for the wicked! I would like to start writing next year but taking things calmly. Lots of ideas for the book racing around in my head, I just need to knock them into shape. We are right in the middle of a brutal heatwave right now so I can only garden up until 11am and then after 7pm. The rest of the time we are hiding inside the house and the poor doggies are flat out on the stone floors! I'll keep in contact 😘

Thank you. Excellent Spanish by the way. Spain is a wonderful country and so diverse with the cool green north to the desert of Almería in the south east and everything in between. Well worth a visit, but try to stay away from the tourist spots, that is not Spain!

I will try to find you on your other platforms in case you don't see this message. I wanted to comment on the spirea video but the comments are turned off. I just found your channel because of that sprirea video. I purchased this homestead property in 2021 and have given the shrubs a year to see what everything will do or what it is. The only things I have removed is some of the plants that are considered an invasive varieties in my area. I now am planning to moved the spirea, and two different camellias. My plans for this property is hindered by where these are growing. In my area of NW FL USA this is best time to move shrubs, it is early November 2022, we are zone 8b. All of these bushes are very old and I am concerned about getting enough root ball to have the move be successful. I plan to cut them all back to about 3' in height and then lift them out and plant them in the new location immediately. I plan to tend to them all winter with water and covers if we have hard freeze. We usually have mild winters here and the ground never freezes. I would appreciate any advice you or viewers may have on this subject. Thank you.

I moved into our current house last November and inherited many trees, bushes, roses, lilies and purple irises. I noticed today the one area that has irises are right beside a tree and the root is pushing the bulbs to the surface and looking for how to dig the bulbs up to share with family this spring but I do not know best way to store them. I found a video that said to put in brown paper bag and to keep an eye for if they are too moist or too dry, but it didn't say what to look for or how to remedy this. I aporeciate any information. 🤩

Oh my gosh! I found you because im about to buy a cornus controversa variegata dogwood so i put it in search on yt. Then i had to watch what apparently was your farewell garden tour that was one yr later, scanning very carefully for the cornus! " ( lets see it was by the chain link fence not the white fence!)"😂 then you said it didnt do well because it got too wet there!😢 im getting one tomorrow and i loved your excitement when you got yours....i will learn from you. THEN i realized i watched you two yrs ago about the floppy italian cypress trees!! What a memory as you helped me there too! Aww, i think your wonderful and i subscribed anyway so i dont lose you and will be watching all your gardening videos! You were an excellent person to watch! I hope your well, i hope you got that nasty Russian olive out of there without incident.. Couldnt you do a one yr update😂 Hope all is ok in your area, so scary all thats happening everywhere..im in Washington state usa. But we have many similar plants. Love, from usa.

I've so enjoyed your videos, and I'm sad to see you sign off! (However, of course, you're entitled to choose when it's time to open a new chapter and close this one.) Like you, pruning is one of my favorite aspects of gardening. I'll certainly be following you on instagram, and as a hopeful request, I'd love to see some before/later pairings of some of the items you did rejuvenation pruning on as the years progress! I have some (very old) camellias and rhododendrons that had been sheared terribly by a previous homeowner and I have been gradually pruning them into tree forms over the years too allow for a woodland planting understory. I'm kicking myself now that I didn't document the "before" but I know from your videos that you have good comparison photos to reference! I also did a major rejuvenation attack on my forsythia with some extra courage from your helpful videos. Thank you so much!

Unless KZfaq changes its present policy, past videos will remain on YT unless I remove them. However, I don't think they will be very visible. If you are not posting videos regularly then the Algorithm kicks in and the videos will be promoted less and therefore less visible . But for the moment all the pruning videos will still be available!🤣

Hello! I found your channel from your video saving an overwatered young avocado! I have an avocado in a very similar sorry state, except from under watering. However, similar to you, I am about to chop the crown off of mine and stick it under a grow light. I was looking to see if you had some sort of update on the avocado. Did it take well to the beheading? How is it now? Thanks!
