My mom taught at Regent Park Public School, in the early 1960s. Many of her students had mental and/or social issues, made worse by poverty. Even then, the neighbourhood had a bad reputation. All of the teachers were warned to make sure they were out of the area by nightfall. Toronto made the same mistake as Liverpool, Manchester, and other cities in England did. They were convinced that all the people in the old slums needed was clean, modern housing. By failing to provide the necessary social services and healthcare, all they did was move the same issues into nice, new housing.

Thank you for showing the improvements in this area. When I drove cab I used to avoid that area so I couldn't be given a fare, it was too scary.❤

I remember watching a film made in the early 50s called Farewell Oak Street about families moving into Regent Park buildings when they were brand new. Seventy years later those buildings are considered obsolete and being demolished. Full circle…

Some of the TCHC rooming houses just north of Sherbourne and Dundas need to be levelled and replaced with a 40-storey condo. It will create a great mixed neighbourhood and the low-income people there can be relocated until affordable housing can be built for them that is better than these nearly 200-year-old houses that they now live in.
@sunspiral79

It would..but theres no money to be made in lowincome condos. There as been very few if any lowincome housing built in the city since the 70s

@@sunspiral79 That is the role of the government to fund and create things that are not profitable but serve a societal need. That's why the social housing in the 1970's was built. It is one of the Raison d'etra for government.

@@shauncameron8390 Right now there are approximately 8,000 homeless people in Toronto. 55,000 people in Ontario and about 240,000 people in Canada. That has a high cost in other areas. GDP, policing, health, and social services. If we don't build social housing those costs go up exponentially. Toronto's budget is over 11.35 billion just for policing and healthcare, making up 60% of the entire provincial budget both of these budgets are increasing at a compounded 10% annual rate.
