Farewell Regent is a 90-minute documentary that captures the Regent Park community of downtown Toronto (the place where social housing began in Canada) in the midst of the largest housing redevelopment project in North America. With this transition it will go from a site of 100% social housing to a mixed income community where condos units will outnumber the social housing units 4 to 1.
The documentary profiles past and current tenants, city officials, developers and housing advocates to get an inside view of the complex issues, emotions and drama that are involved in such a massive redevelopment.
The Regent Park community will be used as an example in an effort to examine the larger issues of the social housing crisis that is plaguing so many urban centers throughout the globe. Housing as a human right is central to the discussion.

Will be great to hear the people speak out! Bring on the documentary! I recall as a community worker the 1980s to 1999 that this is the very thing I feared. 25% to assisted housing has the effect of taking way a lot of valuable housing for those needing assistance and giving "wealthy" people access to downtown prime property. Just to much to say about this injustice here. for example, low income people usually do not have access to cars, so need access to public transit. this is a SAD day!!

I'm not saying giving housing in the community to the wealthy to buy up is the solution. But I'm not hearing any problem solving in your comment there. Clearly the community stopped working the way it was supposed to and became a place misery where Toronto could segregate-out its problems. Do you think the solution was to build taller towers in Regent for 100% assisted housing?

I remember when the housing experiment was created, my parents and my family moved in before the sidewalks had been laid. Over 60 years later my opinion is a home is the most stable thing you can provide a family. Housing is necessary for the homeless and poor. It is paramount for future generations. So what is removed must be more than replaced. On looking at recent photos of Regent Park, I notice a lot of structural development has occurred. Perhaps, it is time to change it all into a central green space. GTA Central Park, sounds good to me.

I don't have a screening date yet for Toronto but will keep everyone posted. I grew up in Regent from 1970 - 80's.

Should change the name while they're at it. Only bad things come to mind when you think of Regent Park. I wouldn't walk there I'm broad daylight.

Isn’t the point of public housing to better yourself and move out? Not stay there generationally or accommodate backwards ways.

An excellent point. But I'm sure it's actually the norm. In a way it's like drug addiction. People like addiction counsellors and professional activists always claim it's nearly impossible to quit drugs because they deal with _or choose to focus on_ the most difficult or impossible cases. Meanwhile most addicts eventually move on without any professional assistance. No one notices. No one ever added them to any statistical count, no one subtracts them either.
