I did a thorough walk around on one I saw on display at a museum and was stunned at how compact these jets are. I’m impressed with this fine machine.

Perhaps the finest, low-level, all weather bomber that's ever existed. I'll miss seeing them in the sky!

@Moravcik 25 150 feet was quite high, I have a friend who was a former Tornado back seater before he moved up to the front seat. He said that over Iraq, they had them down to 50 feet quite regularly. He also said that their Tornado's would pair up and 'attack' US naval shipping in exercises. One Tornado would be the bomber and the other would be the 'missile'. They'd fly toward the battle group at low level and try to get past the USN fighter patrols, then at a certain range, the bomber would peel off and try to get away while the 'missile' Tornado would open the taps and home in on one of the ships in the group at wave top height. He said it was a good exercise for all concerned but he wouldn't say whether they 'hit' any of the target ships. What he did say was he was startled at how quickly the big American carriers & other ships could turn. They turn into any attack to minimise their radar signature & limit any damage they might take.

@Moravcik 25 I agree mate! There's something special about the Tornado, when they go by it's like it's not so much passing through the air, it sounds more like it's tearing it apart with that hollow sounding howl. I live up in Shetland, it was quite common to see them training out in the rural valleys and voes. I'll miss them! I think my last £20 would go on getting the last Vulcan, XH558, back in the sky. Amazing old plane!

Brilliant aircraft, have been side by side with these aircraft on several ops in Afghanistan and Iraq over the years, it’s done an amazing job, along with the crews. Big disappointment when I found out that the last 15 that were in use until the end will all be scrapped from Marham sometime in the near future, surely some can be saved, it’s our Aviation Heritage

Sad to see this fine aircraft being retired from service. They have served the royal air force well. The air and ground crews you are a credit to Britain serving this fine aircraft it must be hard to say goodbye to a aircraft that has been a big part of your careers.

What a superb Fighter reminds me of RAF Valley in North Wales ride on British Aerospace had superb memories of working at various sites around the United Kingdom the superb Tornado (TONKA) (FLYING COFFIN) (Tonka/Fin) (Hindenbergs) (Hindenburgers) (Flying Flick-knife) there has been many names to me it was TORNADO. Being based at RAF Bruggen in Germany when 9 & 31 squadron (The Bats and The Goldstars) where stationed there was the best posting out of all the Germany posts. Especially when they were all painted desert pink for Operation Grandby in '91, the Gulf War. What a sight.

Saw them come past Cranfield as I work a few metres away. Was a bit disappointed after, had expected a turn or 2, or at least cracking open the throttles to scare a few people. All seemed a bit of a wasted opportunity, hundreds of people had managed to gather on a weekday afternoon too see them! Was good seeing them fly over the old Lightning though I suppose.

I currently live under the Marham circuit and am for sure going to miss these beasts rattling the s*** out of my windows as they fly over. When they launched against Libya I was living in Shouldham and stood in the garden listening to them leave and wishing the crews a safe return. Prior to that the cottage I lived in with my partner was in a direct line with the runway and you could stand in the back bedroom or the garden watching Tornados on finals. I'm old enough to remember when it was called MRCA and some wag translated that to 'must refurbish Canberra again' :-)

The dream as a council estate kid was much bigger than the possibility of it ever happening but hey ho. Hopefully fairford will put more of them on their line up as last year we didn't see enough of the tornado to be honest which was a disappointment. Cheers

Disgusted that one more fully serviceable RAF plane goes out of service every year the UK's military become less it's got so bad there are many more memorials forgotten in our churches and villages then we have Men/women/Planes/Tanks/ships/Bases in service, we are truly a third world military power

Tornado airframes are at the end of their lifespan. They would need to purchase brand new airframes. And the cost to remake them with the tooling would just be too much and considering the tornadoes age it makes more sense to have the newer f35. However, we do need more kit and people. That I do agree with. Sad to see the tornadoes go though, left Marham a couple of months ago so saw them all the time.

The issue isn't that Tornado is being taken out of service (they're old and they never received a proper radar or engine update to reflect the shift from low level dumb-bombing to medium level smart-bombing), the issue is that we aren't replacing them with a platform with similar range/payload capability. Typhoon is not apparently receiving the conformal fuel tanks (Tranche 3 has the plumbing for them but development appears to have halted on the CFTs) and we aren't buying the F-35A to replace Tornado alongside the shorter-ranged F-35Bs. It all comes back to our long-term under-funding of the military despite the post Cold-War world not bringing the peace and unicorns promised.

When you have all finished biffing off: how has this (excellent) dismemberment and burning machine enhanced the security, safety and sense of self worth of the actual citizens who bought it for our country from a stock exchange listed armaments company. It did form part of the deterrent but can anyone explain using evidence how this aerial bombing system has helped we British? I thought that was the point! I challenge any of you including the operators of this explosion delivery device to offer your point of view. In the spirit of free speech.
