The best thing about this movie is the relationship between Marge and Norm. Look at how they take care of each other. When she gets the call in the middle of the night, he insists on getting up to make her breakfast even though she tells him he can still sleep. And at the end, when he's all bummed about his painting only making the three-cent stamp, she knows exactly the right thing to say to cheer him up. The way they look after each other, they're like a rock of stability in the middle of all the ugliness and chaos around them. It grounds the whole movie.

"One of the baddest bitches ever put to television." That is so true! Marge is one of my favourite characters ever.

There's a lot of scandinavian "vibe" in this movie, and as a Norwegian from Norway, in Norway, I'm really amused by it! Most of it is just the typical "Minnesota nice"-thing, but I particularily love the melancholic fiddle-tunes that are played, especially towards the end, for instance when Margie drives the cop car away, along with the ambulance. Those melodies, the slow, sad fiddles, they really hit right home, and give the movie an even deeper "nordic" feel :D

Frances McDormand who played Margie... got a Best Actress Academy Award for Fargo.

The Fargo TV show is brilliant as well. Highly recommended.

I love this movie. It really shows just how off the rails things can go when you can't swim but you dive into the deep end.

It's not a true story, that's just a joke. But there is a pretty cool Japanese independent movie where the protagonist sees an old VHS copy of the movie, is convinced that it's a true story, and sets out to Fargo to find the money... it's really good.

I could honestly watch movies with you guys all day reallly dig the intelligent commentary added with honest reactions is like GOLD to me ...for the love of the universe and all that is in it please keep it coming 👍

This flick is a masterpiece.

That was so intense with Marge and the Big Guy in the Prowler. She went from extreme anger and disgust; and then she just says “I don’t understand”. It's almost as if she forgives him for being a selfish loser. Great scene.

Marge is amazing, just like this movie. I love it, so good! Not based on a real story btw, it was just a stunt by the Coen brothers to sort of make people more engrossed in the story. :)

What was so cool was that marge's husband is the only decent guy in the story. And his name is "Norm." Watch the television series to "follow the money."

You really should add Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) to your library (or theater?). It's an insanely underrated movie that shows Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, and especially Director Peter Weir at their very best. Though historical fiction, it has a shocking amount of accuracy while not sacrificing story. The filmmakers even went so far as to purchase a replica, era appropriate frigate and taught the cast to sail it. Worth consideration at the very least.

"You know Norm we're doing pretty good". Amazing how one simple line of dialogue can elicit a strong reaction. For me a bit like in Casablanca . "Welcome back to the fight. This time I know our side will win". Always gets me.

I thought it was so cute that you thought Lundegard was sympathetic at the beginning; of all the evil people in this movie, he may be the worst.

The wisp of romance that runs through this magnificent little film elevates it into my top 20.

For what it's worth, the TV show doesn't stretch out this story into a full season. It tells a completely different story and is just as good as the movie.

As a Minnesotan the one thing I gotta nitpick about is wherever they are filming looks nothing like Brainerd. Brainerd is smack dab in the middle of lake country, lots of tree and lakes, there are lots of lake resorts there and a lot of people have there cabins in that area, It looks like they were filming closer to the Fargo/Moorhead area, the closer you get to North Dakota the Flater and more open things get. Also Frances McDormand does an amazing job in this.

Frances McDormand is married to Joel Coen, she can't have children they adopted a boy from Paraguay in the 1990's. If you want to see her "shine" watch her outstanding turn in Alan Parker's 1988 "Mississipi Burning", she is amazing amongst a brilliant cast, and that one is based on a true story.

The first season of the show is one of the greatest seasons of television ever made.

Another great Coen brothers: "No Country for Old Men". And "Miller's Crossing".

There were many times in my life I went crazy up there by the lake.

I will argue that the Coens make what I like to call "inept victim" films - many times, the criminals are smart, or have good plans, but the stupidity or the inability of the potential marks to follow directions, causes the plans to go haywire.

If you want to see a right turn, watch the movie the Coen brothers did after Fargo, a little something called The Big Lebowski.

A really underrated Coen bros. film is their 2004 remake of "The Ladykillers" with Tom Hanks and Ryan Hurst. The 1955 original with Alec Guiness and Peter Sellers is pretty good too.

Also know that the Fargo series ties into the film. There are different generations etc for example in one of the seasons Marge's daughter is the main character. Haven't seen the fourth season but the first three are amazing.

Ok so I read a couple dozen comments and nobody said it's not a true story. The Coen Bros. were both trolling and getting the audience more invested in the story. I'm sure somebody told you that by now, but just in case. Anyway, you guys rock. I'll sub. ✌️

I'm sure it's somewhere else down in the comments, but go watch the Coen Brothers first film "Blood Simple" now. It was Frances' first film, and where she met Joel Coen who she later married. In contrast to this film, it's a sweaty Texas noir film, and has a scene that's super similar to the car chase scene in this one. It's one of the best directorial debuts ever. Also, "No Country for Old Men" by the Coens (no Frances this time) is my favorite movie of all time. It's a master class in fillm making and so freakin' tense with fantastic performances.

Each one of those screw ups got what was coming to them . But there was a lot of collateral damage . There was just the right amount of humor mixed into the lurid narrative to give the film a realism . The two loose ends left dangling after the film was over , and were for the audience : What would become of Scotty , the teenage son of the Lundergards , and the doctor bag full of cash buried in the snow on the highway .

Good follow up would be A Simple Plan with Bill Paxton. Tonally quite similar to this.

3 Billboards is another great dark comedy with Frances McDormand

There was a really interesting and really horrifying analysis of Fargo from the point of critiquing late stage capitalism, but it was written in late 2000s or mid 2010s so I can't find it... The broad point of it was isolation of individuals through capitalistic desires, like Wade ignoring his son in law Jerry while watching TV, the image which is repeated by the wife Jean, who is seemingly not affected by Wade's isolation of Jerry and is OBLIVIOUS to the impending doom lurking outside the window that is money loving Carl, and the lonely killer Gaer who watches a family themed TV show while ignoring his accomplice Carl, both of whom btw BUYS prostitutes to get love, pretty ironic. Jerry is not given a chair while talking to Wade and his accomplice about his finder's fee, and the next scene shows him walking alone to his car on a white snowcovered parking lot, the image which screams isolation(in retrospect, in my own opinion, the parking lot sums up the isolation caused by car-centric city structure and disconnection of community caused by motoring industry's capitalistic greed but thats just me.) And it pointed out that Marge and her baby is not safe from all of this cold isolation of capitalist wasteland represented by the snowy field of Minnesota, as she is seen consuming the peak capitalism(take-out junk food) alone in her prowler and not dining inside the restaurant, watches TV with her husband(Gaer visibly noticed the line from the TV drama "I'm pregnant", Marge is, for some narrative reason, pregnant), and the faith in humanity lost by being lied to by Mike Yanagita, who was clearly mentally ill from being isolated for whatever reason(who also lives with his parents like Jerry who lives with his father in law, isolated). This all points to a bleak future where she carries Gaer through the snowy wasteland like Jerry did in the beginning. What will her unborn child face in this world?

Really hope you'll do the TV show, too, someday :)

You absolutely have to watch the Fargo TV series (at least the first 2 seasons) they are absolutely amazing. Probably the best TV show I've seen in the last decade.

Jerry must have known that Shep was an ex-con, and asked him to recommend someone to do the kidnapping. Shep apparently recommended Grimsrud (he must have known Grimsrud from prison) and Grimsrud brought along Showalter -- all of them hardened criminals, one of them a bona fide psychopath. Jerry is completely unaware of what kind of people they are. He thinks he can do business with them as if it were a legitimate deal. He doesn't know these guys are out of control and he seems genuinely surprised when Showalter says he wants all the money -- or all the money Jerry told him about. There are too many examples of Jerry's utter incompetence to count.

This movie is amazing. I recommend the FX Fargo series.

If this was Based on a True Story this Movie would be Epic , Unfortunately the Only Truth that happened in Real life was the Chipper, Do Humans act this way in Real Life....
