I love the respect in the scene between Lou and Mike. I think Mike actually enjoys talking to Lou more then anyone else. As he can understand him through his riddles and well spoken tone. In the series you see him have interaction with certain characters. You can tell he feels superior due to his choice of vocabulary. But i truly believe that Mike's character only saw Lou as his equal.

Exactly. Mike talks about liking Lou and Hank and I think he genuinely does. He respects them as opponents, for the will and courage. But he absolutely sees a mental equal in Lou. He knows Lou will see his points and Lou isn't remotely rebuffed by Mike's mention of slavery, because Lou is inherently opposed to such beliefs. And then Lou turns and tries to expand how Mike thinks when discussing "owning places, trying to tame things". Mike loves the conversation. It's like Lou is the only bright spot in the whole escapade for Mike.

I love this scene but I feel a bit like they're both speaking nonsense a bit. Mike tells a story that has a point but only loosely ties in to his overall point. Lou uses a metaphor that suggests that he's, if anything, far too simple (I think most people have more than two pairs of shoes, usually 3-5 to serve different practical functions in their lives). But somehow it's both ridiculous and makes perfect sense.

Mike tries to set himself above others with his intelligence using direct questions "Do you know what the definition of sovereignty is?" or here, " Are you familiar with the phrase 'Manifest Destiny'?" but this time we are thankful that Lou Solverson's common sense philosophy cuts through the psychopathic rhetoric with the simple metaphor that all you need are two pairs of shoes, one for winter, one for summer. The dialogues in Fargo are amazing. It was the same with Lorne Malvo's lines in S01, they fit the actors like hands in gloves.

@@JimmySteller yes and what you described is called charity or a form of it. Fact is even nonprofit organizations still require funding to remain active. Just because another party pays for it doesn’t negate that fact. I also wouldn’t exactly call someone giving there time to an organization their day job but could very easily call it a hobby. Even people that do work for free still have a day job as it’s rather complicated to be able to have the ability to do so unless you’re already financially stable. We could also have the debate as to why a lot of people do charity work and the unfortunate fact is most will do it for tax benefits. I’ve worked for nonprofits before and I still got paid for my time/contributions in one way or another. Comparing charities to businesses that are strictly for profit doesn’t make much sense in my opinion. If you’re in the private sector you can’t be considered a charity, this would be the equivalent to calling a church a business which doesn’t make much sense and would be illegal. Again no one volunteers for a soup kitchen expecting to get rich by doing so(financially rich that is), so by technicality that’s a hobby not a job as your doing it willingly without any intention of making money from it.

@@AE_2023 I've seen Fargo more times than I can count, he is wrong because he is basically trying to compare his lifestyle/philosophy to the black gentleman sitting in front of him. Meaning one is a criminal in an era where racism is rampant, he definitely does not share his lifestyle, upbringing, philosophies, or same ideals. He also talks about this greed or w.e like he doesnt understand that is America and black people like him are going to get what is theirs and the mafia wont cease to exist just cause Lou does not want to see what is clear and obvious infront of him. This is their manifest destiny, they will come and not just white, but black, brown, asian, its their time. Lou and his best friend were Reagan-type characters if you watch the show, he makes an appearance, to me they represent the out-of-touch cops that are always one step behind. Hell their entire precint was put on hold by armed red necks, the racial tension in America was palpable during that time and in the show.
