Farina was founded in the 1870s, originally named The Gums or Government Gums. Farina was settled in 1878 by optimistic farmers hoping that rain follows the plough. “Farina”, which in latin means wheat or flour, representing the optimism of the early settlers who hoped the turn the vast gibber plain into fields of grain.
The Great Northern Railway from Port Augusta was constructed reaching the town in 1882, and from 1884 until 1884 before the railway was extended to Marree.
During the wet years of the 1880s, plans were laid out for a town with 432 ¼-acre blocks. It was believed that it would be good for growing wheat and barley, however normal rainfall is nowhere near enough to grow these crops. Several silver and copper mines were dug in the surrounding area.
In its heyday, the town had two hotels (the Transcontinental and the Exchange) and an underground bakery, a bank, two breweries, a general store, an Anglican church, five blacksmiths, a school and a brothel. In 1909, a 1,143 kilograms (2,520 lb) iron meteorite was discovered north-east of the town.
Today nothing but stone ruins and the elevated railway water tank remain of the township. The post office closed in the 1960s and the railway line closed in the 1980s.
The town hasn't been inhabited since 1967, with the closest residents now living at Farina station, visible to the west of the town. A bush camping area is maintained by the owners of Farina station.

WOW! Cannot believe we are treated to another video within a week. This is truely a facinating place. I would love to explore Farina sometime. That underground bakery would hve been a treat if it was opened. Great to see the locals preserving what remains today at Farina. Those bloody flies... Great adventure. 👍🏽🙏🏽🤗

It is pretty crazy that they were going to try grow wheat. Imagine being the last few people living there. Hard to leave everything you've built behind.

Great video, I can recommend the bakery fantastic pies, pasties and donuts. The coffee is pretty good as well. Did you camp in the camp grounds at Farina? Cheers Darryn.

Great video of the true outback! The flies this year are just horrendous and I can definitely say those head nets are fantastic! I got to use mine recently too in the Little Desert. I'm a wildlife/bird photographer... did you see any interesting birds on this trip??

Oh those flys are unbearable. No of the sprays work, apparently the flys are different to the house fly. Can't say I am a bird expert, but when we were just past Marree I sent my drone up, and within 30 seconds, what I think were Eagles, just came out of nowhere, had to bring it down very quickly.

Our great grandfather died near Farina while droving sheep and alone. The death registration of William Heyward McKinlay records he was about 56 yrs of age when he died 14 August 1914 of heart failure near Higgins Dam about 17 km east of Farina, but his usual residence was Tilcha Station. Occupation station stockman, born in Victoria. He is not recorded as buried at Tilcha Station nor at Farina and was probably buried near Higgins Dam. Has anyone seen his grave?
