On Robert Walker? Why? It’s clear what happened. Robert Walker was on another bender and had been drinking ALL day. His doctor foolishly gave him an injection of a medium-high dose of seconal on top of that, without either ascertaining whether or how much Robert had previously been drinking, or having handy the necessary resuscitative equipment for a respiratory distress condition, which can be caused when combining tranquilizers or otherwise having too much of any individual tranquilizer. Robert Walker’s breathing stopped immediately and without resuscitative equipment present the only outcome could be death....the lungs fail to circulate oxygen, then the brain is deprived of oxygen, which will then stop the heart. It was a terrible, unfortunate accident that might’ve been prevented had his doctor acted more presciently under the circumstances. There’s a dual biography on him and his ex-wife Jennifer Jones called ‘Star-Crossed’ if you would like to read more about him and his unfortunate death. I love the ‘Autopsy’ show, but they likely wouldn’t cover Robert Walker unless they were absolutely out of any ideas whatsoever. They tend to do people who are at least reasonably well-known. Robert Walker died 70 years ago, his name is known only to the most serious of classic film buffs, unfortunately.

@@jblue705 The doctor sounds incompetent. I wonder how many other people he did this to? Thank you for the detailed report on what happened to Robert Walker. He was a brilliant actor. I had forgotten how young he was when he died. At the time, I was three years old and would not have been aware of any of this. I saw "Strangers" as a teenager on TV in the 1960's and again at a repertory cinema (remember those?) in the mid-1970's.

@@lemorab1 How sad one person replied here to say the late Robert Walker wasn't famous enough to warrant a documentary on his death. He was a huge talent, who achieved leading man status, despite dying at just 32. Not many actors achieve legend status at such a young age! His death from drink/drugs (but basically from mental illness) was so unexpected, it left producers of the movie he was making. 'My Son John' with a headache. They were only able to complete that, his final movie, by splicing in shots of Walker from 'Strangers on a Train'. Walker's death was crazily premature and tragic, but he left behind an impressive body of work for such a short career. He also left two sons with actress Jennifer Jones, one of whom, actor Robert Walker Jr, was a dead ringer for his father and enjoyed similar success.

Despite his problems and short career,Robert Walker was in a varied range of films including war, western, comedy and even musicals? His lead role with Judy Garland in 'Under The Clock' is memorable and so is his turn as composer Jerome Kern in 'Till The Clouds Roll By'. He starred with Burt Lancaster in 'Vengeance Valley' just before 'Strangers On A Train'. His son,Robert Walker Jnr died a few years ago aged 79. I hate the intimation that Robert Walker was gay. Farley Granger was, but RW was deeply in love with Jennifer Jones whom he married in NY when they were students at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. They were both called to Hollywood, she being chosen by David O. Selznick to star in "The Song of Bernadette," and he for many roles. Selznick became infatuated with JJ and promised to make her the greatest star ever. He divorced his wife, the daughter of Louis B Mayer, head of MGM, and JJ was ambitious and divorced RW, taking their two small boys, whom he adored. Selznick then cast JJ and RW opposite each other, during their separation and before she married Selznick, as tragic young lovers in the wartime film, "Since You Went Away", which was cruelly heartbreaking for RW. He was a devastated man. If you ever come across the book, "Starcrossed", by Beverly Linet, in a store that sells old books, read it. It will break your heart, too. He was only about 32 when he died. He was a popular and successful actor whose whose life was destroyed by a powerful man's obsession. BTW, RW then briefly married but it couldn't last. He did not die from alcoholism or a drug overdose, but from a sedative injection given to him by his doctor. RW didn't want it. He said it would kill him, and it did. Such a tragedy.

Frankly it does not matter whether he was gay, straight,, or bi-curious. Straight men sometimes try things out with other men and it does not make them gay. It does not make them even bi-sexual. Men just experiment sometimes. In any case he was a very good actor.

Well, he described himself as being attracted to both sexes. Also, the longest and most meaningful romantic relationship of his life was with a man...they were basically married for over three decades just without a license...so it definitely wasn't just "experimenting".

@@carollopes5950 just realized that he might have been talking about Robert Walker, not Farley Granger. Granger was bisexual and lived the second half of his life with a man. @@andromedastar4900 But one certainly wonders what with all of Robert Walker’s documented mental health issues whether a conflicted sexuality may have played a role. At that point in time in society & history, it could have. I personally deal with a similar issue so I know what it feels like.

@@jblue705 That is certainly possible. Walker was definitely very depressed and lonely, especially during the time Granger worked with him on this film. On the night of August 28, 1951, Walker's housekeeper reportedly found Walker in an emotional state. She called the actor's psychiatrist, Frederick Hacker, who arrived and administered amobarbital for sedation. Walker had allegedly been drinking before the outburst, and it is believed the combination of amobarbital and alcohol caused him to lose consciousness and stop breathing. Efforts to resuscitate Walker failed and he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. He was aged 32.

Granger considered himself bisexual, he had relationships with women as well as men - just because he settled down with a male partner for the last years of his life doesn't automatically mean that he was just gay. Robert Walker was deeply in love with his first wife Jennifer Jones and was a very troubled man offscreen. I have never heard anything about him being bisexual - it's possible I suppose. I think he just didn't want to be alone (as Farley talked about it here).

Muirmaiden I have never heard of Robert Walker being bi-sexual. Every woman who worked with him has said he was gracious kind lovely man who sadly still loved his ex-wife Jennifer Jones to the point it tortured him for rest of his too short life. They also all have added he was very talented never brought his troubles on set. I just saw two of them speaking about RW on TCM today. Sometimes I think it has more to do with certain actors having been attracted to men like RW that start the rumours.

To a straight woman looking for a romantic relationship with a man, if he has ever slept with a man, or he thinks he could be attracted to a man in the future, he's off-limits, period. All those shades of grey and labels being discussed here are irrelevant to her. Please, when a woman asks a man if he's gay, she means does he think about men sexually. She doesn't want to be tricked into dating a man who is hiding under a technicality.

Walker was in the middle of a power play with Selznick who fancied his wife Phyllis Isley (Jennifer Jones) In consequence he had a breakdown but worked on the film during this breakdown. Ultimately Selznick probably sent in the `men in white` to terminate Walker as he died when fighting restraint. The sedation either OD-ed Walker or he died because of sedation complications ie alcohol. Hitch was obviously selling Granger on the role as he really wanted Gene Kelly (a terrible person) who attended the same Catholic church as Hitch in BH. Hitch had asked Kelly and Kelly refused, pouting: `Why did he ask me?` Anyone who knows the inside story of the MInnelli-Kelly-Garland affair will know precisely why and why Kelly should have played it. My G-d he would have been perfect!

I think the fact that both of them were gay in real life, but having to hide it at the time, was something you can feel through the screen, Hitchcock must have loved having them play these characters because of all the gay undertones. In the movie, Walker's character was openly gay, while Granger's was repressed. The homosexual subtext in the movie and book is very obvious, with Bruno being completely infatuated and obsessed with Guy, while Guy finds himself caught up in the web, seduced by the sociopathic Bruno, in a love-hate relationship. In real life, Granger was openly gay and Walker was straight, although it is possible the two actors had a romantic relationship during the few months of filming and the few months after (Granger had a habit of being attracted to his male co-stars, and Walker was very depressed and lonely, and it's possible he opened up to Granger because he needed comfort from another human being)...as Granger hints at here, but of course he was from a different era and a gentleman, so he would never "out" an affair he had over five decades earlier with a man who has long since passed.

Killer Joe Actually there are more testimonials of Robert Walker being a supremely kind gentle man brilliant actor than being 'crazy'. He had a very difficult time after his wife(Jennifer Jones) had an affair left him for David O Selznick/ wealthly much older film producer screenwriter film studio exec. He adored his 2 young sons by their account was a wonderful father. Unfortunately for him he was unable to fall out of love with his wife which led to the drinking. Robert btw retains much kinder rep in Hollywood than his ex-wife JJ. Robert passed away suddenly in 1951at 32 from allergic reaction to sleep medication witnessed by a fellow actor.

Jennifer Jones was painfully shy and intensely private, and while she didn't necessarily get along with everyone, she certainly made a point of advocating for and contributing to charities, particularly regarding mental health issues, following the suicide of her daughter. Keep in mind, she never told her side of the story. Robert Walker Jr stated a few years ago that privately she would say to her sons, "Why in heaven's name did I ever leave that fellow?" While "Star-Crossed" is an excellent book, the author was clearly biased against Jones (most likely because the actress declined to be interviewed). Since Walker loved her so deeply, she must have had redeeming qualities.
