When I was building and repairing apple bins, I had to make various jigs, that made it easier for production, pre ordered hardwood planks and 4x4s the sizes we needed, had to build a 6hp 3 phase motor into a tablesaw in order to cut the 4x4s in half (triangular half) (we went thru blades , I tell you what) you would have appreciated our shop, and the process, the only thing that wasn't good, was the money!!! Hehheh ... every edge touching fruit had to be rounded , talking millions and millions of linear feet of lumber. No joke. Got really good with a fork lift on that job as well. And the handheld rigid mini router, that saved serious carpal tunnel... the jig table was more efficient, but the repetition was hard on the wrist. Like I said, you would have appreciated the process and the shop we built. And I have a good avalanche story related to this too. Hahahahahha...

Very nice table and workmanship. I built one for my wife that is almost the same dimensions as we could not find one in a furniture store we liked. I used Cherry for the top and a reddish Minwax stain. I painted the legs black. I was the first table I had built. I got a lot of help from YT for ideas. Thanks for posting this video.

Do you have a day job or is this a hobby/profession? With your knowledge, and skills and the quality of this build, I think in time you could bring in some good jobs. My best work was years ago when I did most things mostly by hand tools not electric machines. Now I have machines and my quality has gone down. I have always been a hobbyist, and time doesn't matter but if you're trying to make money then time is money. Machines can help make money but for me seems to have taken the fun out of it. I'm de-machining a bit. Good luck.

Well, I don't usually sell the things I build, so I guess that makes it a hobby. But I do sell plans for the stuff I build so I guess that makes it a profession. We've got a real conundrum going on here 🤔. I do like to use hand tools, and I use them on every single project, but I do appreciate have a jointer and a planer. I used to joint and plane every single board by hand, but on a larger project, that could mean days of planing. Since a jointer and planer can knock out that same amount of work in minutes, it seems like a fair trade off. I guess in general, I use machines for the heavy lifting, and use hand tools for the finer details.

I was going to comment on this as well. Overall all I would give you guys an A . The chamfer is more of an aggravation for the person who has to clean the table. A minor problem that is best avoided with a table cloth. Wives and mothers on real farms used wonderful cotton tablecloths which keeps the table clean and adds to the overall look of the setting in a kitchen or other room. There is something nice about a table cloth and many restaurants charge more for tablecloth service.

Just curious but, by gluing the ends of the table to the breadboard and screwing the rails to the table top, you have essentially halted any possibility of table top wood movement. You've defeated the purpose of the breadboards.Your thoughts?
@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 6 жыл бұрын
Gluing the breadboards is definitely not best practice. I didn't put any glue in the (oversized) dowel holes for the ends in hopes that would help things during wood movement. As far as screwing the top through the rails goes, I oversized the holes, and didn't over tighten the bolts. Since the holes are oversized, the bolts can shift around inside the hole as the wood moves. It's been about 7 months since I built the table. You can definitely see that the wood has moved, but as of yet, no cracks!
@eyeswideshut2800
@eyeswideshut2800 4 жыл бұрын
@@OneMinuteWorkbench from all the videos there seems to be a specific way to do breadboard and you were somewhat on track but it helps to alternate woodgrain and mind how you attach base and top. I've seen enough bad farm tables now to not want to go through the trouble and just do it right, old food trapped in cracks and glasses toppling over is not appealing.

I have watched 10 videos on farmhouse tables, because I am building one this summer. You are the 3rd video to float the bread boards with slots. Dose pocket screws make this step unnecessary or are all those peoples going to wish they had seen your video?!! I worked with a furniture maker for 36 months, we made table, but no bread boards.
@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 4 жыл бұрын
In fairness to woodworkers that are better than I am, the method I used here isn't the best. Providing slots will help, but gluing the boards still causes problems. This particular table has been okay...there has been some movement, but it hasn't cracked anything (over about 2 years time). You'd be better using a more complex method like this: www.woodmagazine.com/woodworking-tips/techniques/joinery/breadboard Oh, and pocket screws will create the same troubles where wood movement causes the boards to crack. I hope this helps!

@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 7 жыл бұрын
Rudyard Kipling thanks for the compliment! I probably would have chosen just to leave it natural with a clear coat, or a very mild stain that mimics a natural wood, and then clear coat that. But I tend to under use colors, so it's probably good for me to build projects like this where I have to use them. Thanks again!

How accurate were the score marks on the doweling jig? That's a problem with the HF dowel jig. On mine not only are there no score marks but the block is not drilled true so the dowel is at a slight angle and the opposing boards do not line up.
@OneMinuteWorkbench
@OneMinuteWorkbench 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking time to comment! I think the block on mine is pretty true, however I haven't done any tests to verify it, other than using it often. Mine is also HF, and just like yours did not come with score marks. I added the score marks and they were probably not that accurate either. To make sure the holes line up, my trick is to just make sure I always start from the same end, and always have the jig facing the same direction for every hole I drill. That way, even if the marks aren't dead center on the hole, all the holes will be the same amount of off-center and line up with each other. Thanks again ~ happy building!

Thanks for the feedback! A few people have mentioned that the breadboards would probably cause some spilts in the top, but so far it hasn't happened. However, the table resides at my friend's house in Southern California, so that's probably not a very fair example of most places (obviously, the weather in SoCal is very temperate; much more so than most places in the states). I've been thinking about doing an update to this table with bread boards that are built better, but there is so much to do and so little time! Anyway, thanks again!
