Andrew, I was really impressed with your kind gesture and appreciation with the black grass pullers by providing ice cream and drinks during their work. I do mostly building work now and when people come out with cake, tea, ice cream whilst we are doing a job for them on a hot day or cold one I cannot express enough how nice and kind and thoughtful it is, well done it’s a simple and cheap though but really appreciated by the workers and I can tell you from experience. Also talking to them and treating them like normal human beings. Great compassion & comrade ship, well done. Tom

I’m done the weed pulling job for years when I was younger, so I know how hard it is and tiring. In fact, I never ask anyone to do anything I’ve not done, another example is shovelling out grain bins!!!

Very good and interesting, good to take the time out and chat with the pulling team. Apparently the skin on ketchup tomatoes are very tough and a job to cut with a knife, they use to grow them on a farm I worked on in Ohio , keep up the good videos Wardy! 👍

I have to say your black grass pullers put to shame people sat on their backsides saying there's no jobs or claiming benefits. A wonderful gesture to spend a break with the team. Ensuring they feel valued and appreciated. 👍

Don't mind which intro you do Andrew, the updates are all good and very informative. Nice to see you looking after the Black grass pullers, things like that go a long with building a good rapour.

Doing well in difficult black grass pulling. Maybe some clever engineer can add a spray to a drone to put dye and glue on the heads to easier find and stop any seed drop.

Answer to your intro question: I watch a number of different farming channels that don’t do intros like yourself. That’s fine, they’re all good in their own way but I really appreciate the detailed educational approach you take in your spoken intros. The overall knowledge of current affairs and industry insight you provide is great! Don’t underestimate the wisdom you bring.

Andrew, I prefer your personal intros, to the clips. Thanks for getting out and about with the grass pluckers, and it goes down really well when you go out and speak to them. They have more appreciation of what they do, and are more invested in the work they do. I did this years ago can't remember why, but good to see the farmer we were working for. Also nice to see Warwick uni's involvement, and some of those Toms looked really good enough to eat!

Andrew. prefer your intro to the camera. Saw the Zurn Blackgrass header at cereals this year and came to the conclusion that if you have to resort to that type of machine you have already lost the battle against Blackgrass.

Spot on, me too. If you’ve got blackgrass at those levels, the wheat yield will be so poor, the crop should have been round upd off weeks ago.

The problem i see with the zurn is, a farmer near me mowed down some blackgrass a month or so ago, they've mowed it again and the BG is still growing and putting on ears low to the ground because the plant isn't dead. I've had 2 people come pulling oats with me this year and its not as expensive as people think. The roots are pulled so the plants dead and the ears removed so there's no chance of them growing

Hi Andrew. Great update once again, and much nicer to see the spoken intro, and even more delighted to see the return of the outro. I think it definitely feels more personal, but I have to apologise again for thinking you might have taken influence from somewhere, I didn't consider the editing side of your work, and knowing nothing avout it I'd hate to suggest or infer that you were somehow putting less effort in. Your videos especially really seem to hit home with me. All the same, if you're having to lose recording time to your regard for their quality then fair enough, but if you're just shortening your videos for run time, I for one would enjoy the extra content in the form of a second video or chapter. Would that make life easier or would it just increase your workload?
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard 24 күн бұрын
Some viewers moan if the vids are too long, that’s why I keep them to around 20 mins. Also, viewing figures don’t favour more than 1 mid week vid at 20 mins. Maybe a 10 min one on Tuesday and another 10 min on Thursday as well as the usual sun one would work but until I edit the Wed one on Wed afternoon, I don’t realise its length! I’ll be posting shorter ones, more regularly in harvest,

How about adapting a sprayer so the bags hang on the boom and the pickers walk behind the machine in a row..no need to carry the bags which wud save time and energy
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard 24 күн бұрын
It would tie a machine and another man up. The headland in that wheat field took 4 hours, that would mean the sprayer stood or crawling for that time. Often it’s elsewhere spraying crops. Years ago when we had a lot, we had a front end loader on a tractor and took that up the tramline.

I think that was a unfair bash at the Zurn machine potentially putting people off the machine. A good friend of mine Kevin Smith (Pasture Care) works his socks off running two machines even towing caravans staying away from home for weeks trying to make a living as a contractor. He offers a good service and has repeat business so that says something. Yes, it might not be a good as hand pulling but many farmers don't have access to hand rouging gangs. However, it is a compromise and it deals with wild oats, Rye grass as well as black grass all at the same.
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard 23 күн бұрын
Totally agree, I did say everyone’s view on level of control you’re happy with is different. We’ve had 11 years of trying to get rid of the weed and zero tolerance is the only way if you’re trying to best it and with the Zurn I don’t think you can’t get that level of control but I also said it’s impossible to say in a few weeks, it would take 4 of 5 years to see if you’re having any impact.

@chrislee2221
@chrislee2221 24 күн бұрын
Black grass is very difficult to control, a lot of it is timing which makes spraying difficult in high wind or wet weather.its also becoming increasingly immune to chemical warfare.
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard 24 күн бұрын
Chemicals come and go at a rapid pace but don’t last long before the weed is resistant to the chemical. The weed make up is incredibly complex, hence a whole load of measures, non chemical, are needed to control it.
