My brother and I testing the IH 46 baler we picked up for $300 at a local trading post. The baler has quite the patina on it, but it had been well cared for. I was worried about the knotters because this model has a reputation for unreliable knotters. We greased it up, put fresh twine in it, and sharpened the knives. Had to make a repair to the knotter trip arm. After the twine cycled, we baled 13 mini bales with no missed ties. It will get a full test during the 2nd cut this year. The old Farmall 400 was our dad bought back in the late 60's - early 70's. We use this tractor almost daily around the farm. We have a New Idea loader for it as well. The engine is original and has never been rebuilt. The thing still fires right up and is a workhorse. We consider it a family heirloom!

I use one of these balers behind a 165. I had knotter problems with mine which i finally resolved this year. I managed to bale 110 bales without too much trouble

I think you are referring to the ih 45 baler . I’ve heard bad things about them but the 46 and newer international balers were quiet reliable . Most things to look for is twine disc timing and make sure the knives are sharp other then that they are great balers and for what you gave for it that was a steal .

Good day Karie. Yes I'm from Ontario. The 45 were bad, 46 I didn't think were much better, gave IH a bad name for balers up here. NH & JD took over. Thanks I forgot Massey for a while

I must of picked up a million bales of hay behind one of these. I used to pray it broke. Never did. Occasional missed a knot but not very often.

I like the positive comments about the 46. Getting one going saved from a wind row.

Yeah! We only had one windrow left in the field after bailing round. This was our first time running this baler so we wanted it to cycle as much as possible. Baled 13 on that row ok with no missed ties. We adjusted it correctly and baled about 300 on the 2nd cut. Missed about 10%. I can live with that from a 60 year old baler that we only paid $300 for. Love that old red equipment!
