Watch Pt. 1 here: • Farrowing gilts on pas...
All gilts have farrowed successfully, rain from the edge of hurricane Matthew, reviewing the performance of each gilt.
I (Jordan) and my wife, Laura, own and operate J & L Green Farm in Virginia. It has been our full time occupation for the last 12 years building this first generation, pasture based, direct to retail farm. We are in the small percentage of farmers that actually make their income from farming. As such we address our farm as a business and make decisions with that in mind. What you see here is what it takes. No BS or disney’ifying.

I recently had a gilt that didn’t know she was a mother. You described the exact thing mine did. 12 in 3 or 4 spots in the pasture. I gathered them all up , took every one to the barn and had to literally hog tie her to let them nurse the first time. After that she was perfectly normal. Thanks for your videos. I learn something from every video seems like.

Thank you for the information shared. Does this system reduce the smell of the pig waste. How do you handle their waste in this system.
@FarmBuilder
@FarmBuilder 7 жыл бұрын
Big topic. No, this system does not smell. In my opinion, any livestock system that has a stench I can smell half a mile away is a gross mismanagement. I prefer to capture every nutrient possible through adequate rotation or high levels of carbon.

Hi! I love your videos! You are so helpful to this newbie pig raiser! We are raising Mangalitsa pigs. We have 2 pregnant gilts outside with the boar. They have calf hutches but I'm worried they will squish their babies as they all cram into one shelter to sleep! What are your suggestions?
@FarmBuilder

They will, you will need to isolate the sow when she goes into labor. Also the Boar will get real frisky. Best move him out while they have piglets.

We got into hog breeding for the first time last year with the intention of farrowing in pens instead of crates. We have discovered the high incidence, however, of smashed piglets, and I wonder if you have any recommendations for finding good mothering genetics. We've thought about heritage breeds, but they do tend to have less muscle, and I'm wondering if the best way to fix mothering is really to make that sacrifice.

Really thats her fate? Remember she is someone not something, instead of slaughtering her because she can't provide you some piglets why dont you consider bringing her to a forever shelter to a sanctuary. make a call I promise you'll have someone there rather expeditiously and maybe you'll understand what it's like to feel good for the doing the right thing. I know what it's like personally not to be able to have children and it's very painful and as you know or maybe you don't know, pigs are highly intelligent not far past humans. let her live her life probably another 20 to 25 years at a sanctuary where she can be who she is and be happy and be free not saying you should do this with all your pigs but every now and then there is something that is right and just about it. My Hope Is that one day you'll switch over to another type of farming that doesn't involve slaughtering of highly intelligent sentient beings

obviously I disagree with your assertions here but take no affront from your beliefs. The fact is all life is built on the death of other life, even down to the microbial level. Our task as farmers is to steward the land, resources and animals for a better tomorrow than today. I firmly believe animals play a key role in this process and are integral to human nutrition.
