My lift gets stuck way too easy, so I fix the hydraulic drive plus several other things. First I disconnect the dysfunctional hydraulic motor, cap the lines, and find it has more power. Then I fix the water temperature gauge which is much easier said than done. Finally I install a new spring brake assembly returning the vehicle to 4 wheel drive.
For those wondering, McClinch is just the name of a company that owned the lift in the past. McClung is the name of a mechanic who I turn to to bounce ideas off of, and he has given me lots of advice on fixing this lift. We have joked that it should say McClung instead of McClinch because of all the help he has given me. Thanks Mr. McClung!

yea so many channels like this I've heard say they didn't think people would want to watch this or that or make short videos because they didn't want to bore people but there is a whole viewer base that just watch for entertainment, in that case there is no issue with the video being too long, thats the biggest thing I find so many channels like this do, I dont bother with the 10 minute ones even if its a playlist, I want to see the whole job start to finish this boom lift series is a spothitter

The coolant sensor to the ECM is probably for timing advance.
@jqoutlaw
@jqoutlaw Жыл бұрын
Agreed. The ECM also may look at oil pressure and coolant temps to kill or limit power.
@MacPoop
@MacPoop Жыл бұрын
Kinda odd that it has a map port too. If it works how it think it might do, coolant temp probably retards initial timing as it warms up and uses the map port as the curve throughout the range. Probably no more complicated than that. No idea how oil pressure is being managed for the machine-side although I'm 99% sure it's got something to cut ignition if pressure drops below threshold (whatever threshold is). Wish I'd known this little standalone ignition/ECM existed 25 years ago as it was a total pain in the ass coming up with good solutions to run early distributorless engines on carb back then and total FI delete (if anyone did circle track back then you'll know exactly what I mean)
@adamvandenboogard509
@adamvandenboogard509 Жыл бұрын
Yes that little ecm should also cause an engine shut down in the case or over temp or loss of oil pressure. It also changes ignition timing base on engine temp.

@MacPoop
@MacPoop Жыл бұрын
@@adamvandenboogard509 You know what, I didn't think of that.. that makes it even more simple than I thought it was.. ECM temp sensor may do absolutely nothing more than kill ignition when temp threshold is exceeded, nothing more, same as oil pressure. Just electronic Murphy switches. That explains the map port now.. that's what's running total timing & the curve. Exactly as a distributor would (twisted for base timing, bob weights or dashpot for the curve). That's an elegant out of the box totally 90's-reliable solution to running a distributorless rig on a carb

As a Boom Technician in Canada, this video intrigued me. I have worked on this very model here. Good job getting the engine and drive problems figured out! Over here, there needs to be an annual factory inspection as well as an engineer's inspection and certification. The engineer inspects all of the welds, railings and frame for damage or breakage. My job is to perform a mechanical inspection and correct anything that does not work as intended. Your boom chains do not need to be replaced unless they are damaged or stretched more than 3%. That being said, it's a lot of work to go back in to replace them later on. If the chains are okay, soak them in diesel to loosen them up and clean them up. If your wear pads look worn out, replace them, do not add more shim plates. Give the extend/retract cylinder as much love as you can, you'll probably only remove it once. At full extension, the boom looks like a bowed fishing pole. This is normal and engineered for this. I'll give you a sub and keep watching your progress.

You did okay with the Allen head drain screw, but just wanted to mention an old trick for stripped Allen head screws. Hammer in a slightly oversized Torx socket. The Torks has six flutes and digs right in. Then use a breaker bar.
@brandon2076
@brandon2076 Жыл бұрын
Mac RBRT extractor allen sockets are great for stripped or rounded allen bolts, they work great even when they aren't stripped and you want to prevent them from stripping in high stakes situations. The torx trick does work, but sometimes you have no room to hammer them in. They're not cheap but considering the time they save you they pay for themselves quickly.

LOVED the discussion of the boom lift at the end - you're absolutely right in tearing that thing down, I basically yelled "WHAT" when I heard "every 2 years" 😲for a complete boom teardown and inspection. Listen I'm a fan of OSHA and general safety and health standards in the sense that they keep corporations from taking advantage of workers too much but that seems like a lot of work even to me 😂 Also absolutely loved the outro music 👍👍👍

Most rent or lease and requirements would be different then. We had osha inspections and lift inspections by the man lift companies. I only know this because I was there maintenance manager for years. Rolling stock was handled by a different shop but I scheduled inspections. They are much stricter with cranes.

If a part costs $150 to buy and I can do it myself for $20 worth of parts, I still have to consider how much time it is going to take. I worked in the equipment rental industry for decades. All the aerial equipment manufactures replacement parts were insanely priced. On aerial equipment, when parts went bad, if the part had a manufacture tag or name, I'd call that company direct and buy the same new part for 1/3 of the cost from the equipment manufacture. Example- 20' electric scissor lifts have a 24 volt DC motor that drives the hydraulic pump. The equipment manufacture wanted $700 for it. I saw the tag on the motor from who made it and called them. They sold me the same motor for $250.00. Some parts were made specifically for an equipment manufacture and were protected meaning they wouldn't sell the parts to anyone but the manufacture. I found that most parts were not protected and bought them direct from the parts maker who sold the parts to equipment manufacture. There are also equipment wrecking yards where equipment is stripped of it's good parts similar to a car junkyard. You can find lots of still good parts in those places as well. Also, I've never heard of a boom mast assembly needing to come completely apart every two years. No way is that right. An annual inspection? Yes, but taking the boom apart isn't part of that. The only time we took a boom apart is something broke inside it. This is with a national equipment rental company.

This is such a great channel! I love watching the videos you put out. To the boom repair project, I couldn’t agree more with the teardown and inspection. I came from the aerospace industry and “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke” only applied to your letter opener. *ALL* of the machines that were used to make parts that went on airplanes were on a preventive maintenance schedule. Before this policy was implemented, the maintenance department joked that they were firemen, running around the shop, stomping out fires. After a PM program was developed and implemented, machine down time that interrupted workflow all but stopped. The gains in productivity were huge. If your butt depends on this thing to function properly, get it on a preventative maintenance schedule that works for you. (If you checked the boom in two years following your up coming teardown and it all looked great, go ahead and extend your PM time frame to every 3 or 4 years. Check it again in 3 years, if it’s all good, extend it out even further. Maybe put a hobbs meter (hour meter) on the lift and check the important things using actual use time if just sitting out in the weather doesn’t hurt it. Make it a system that works for you and you’ll be far less prone to things failing in the field. That’s when the machinery downtime really hurts. Keep up the great content! This is one of my favorite channels. The humor you inject brings you down to earth with the rest of us mortals. Love it!

Oh, what I would give to have a wiring diagram that looked that good! I build custom cables and wiring harnesses for industrial customers. The diagrams I get range from charts to diagrams that are just silly. I kid you not, one customer sent us a "wiring diagram" that was a combination of a layout diagram and wiring diagram that was made in MS Paint at the last minute! That one took the production manager, the head engineer and myself a couple of hours to figure out what they were trying to do.

I absolutely love your approach to things, thoughts and sarcastic jokes about other stuff, from seals to horror wiring diagrams... Keep on, very interesting videos to enjoy. It's also a never ending story, when you ask people about something, you get always lots of contradictory anwers.. As you said, though, when it's your butt on the line, you better check to avoid troubles. I agree it's also fun to use equipment for (like in your espisode of combining a boom lift and a pond) a little less intended purposes although fun can fast escalate to big problems or even tragedy. You appear to be a wise man, so that will probably never happen.. nobody knows for sure. Keep on, cheers and do it right! There are priceless things in life. 😉👍

Jon, you have some amazing tenacity. I’d need to use a common logarithmic scale to measure it. This boom lift is sure testing it to the max. Based on all the problems you’ve had to fix on it, I’d bet a lot of your money that the previous owner did very little maintenance on it using a tech certified to work on it. So checking out the boom isn’t just a “might get to it sometime” job. I’d categorize it as a “not going to use this until I inspect it and fix everything that looks out of sorts” job. You have probably tripled it’s value with all your repairs. Your channel has great content and I appreciate the video quality too. Keep them coming.

Protip for wiring diagrams, make a copy of it, and use highlighters to follow wires. Cheap-o kit works wonders, mine is i think 10 colors. Its Sharpie brand because it was the only narrow tip, get them after school starts when they are cheap as dirt. Makes it 10 times easier to keep track of what you want to look at.

I was the company painter for a construction company in 2014 and got handed the task of painting the company's 2 telehandlers. One 24,000 and one 27,000 lbs. It took me a month. It's not an easy task.
