Big news! I've put together an amazon affiliate storefront where I've made lists of my favorite tools that I use in my many shop projects, with an individual description on each tool explaining why it made the list. Check it out! I think you will find it useful! www.amazon.com/shop/farmcraft101 I make some money if you buy something from the list, or even if you buy something different after clicking on the store. The prices are the same Amazon prices no matter if you go through my store or not, I just get a small percentage if you do. A great way to support the channel that's essentially free! Have a great weekend everybody!

This will sound weird, but I watched both videos and they brought tears to my eyes. The reason is I am now 78 years old and when I was 10 to 14 years old I had this identical motor (same color, same decals, everything) on a boat similar to the one in the video. Back then my parents bought me the boat and motor used for $125. I was a fishing fanatic and spent all my summers in this boat fishing, mostly yellow perch and northern pike, around Madison, Wisconsin. I had to learn everything about that motor; it could be a little temperamental! Thanks so much for this great video.

I too, had the same reaction. in 1952 or so, I was introduced to duck hunting by my grandfather & father, at a club my grandfather started in 1908. I was 4, and would sit in the blind with a toy popgun, shooting at ducks. Our little boat had the same motor, and to this day, I still love the scent of two-stroke exhaust. It reminds me of a time long past.

Wow. I have my Dad's Johnson Outboard and it looks identical to this one except it's more dented up and the paint is more faded. . I'm 68 and I was about 10 years old last time he used it. We would rent a wooden creek boat from an old guy on Tranters Creek for 1.00 a day. Those boat leaked like crazy and we had to bail the whole time. I still have the motor but it hasn't run in at least 58 years. Dad would use an 8 ounce Coke bottle to measure the oil. Good times and good memories.

Great job! There's a few things I should mention. I've owned outboards since the age of 8 so I know a few things. The lower gear oil is filled from the bottom up. This assures all the voids are filled. You need a small hand pump for that purpose. Once the oil comes out of the top you're done. The tricky part is unscrewing the hose then quickly putting back the screw. Expect a little spillage. The water pump "pee hole" simply lets you know the water pump is working. The hoses from the water pump to the "Pee hole" do get clogged from time to time which can make you think the impeller is no good. It's a good idea to use compressed air to assure the "Pee hole" and hoses are clear. From the video it looks fine but that stream of water could be a bit stronger. To check blast some air in the system. if there's no change the impeller may be a bit brittle from sitting so long. If you can't find a new one coat the impeller with Vaseline and let it sits a few days. It's great for bringing the rubber back to almost new condition! Best Regards, Jay

@@anthonyadverse4449 Vaseline is an old trick my grand dad taught me. He would coat the sidewalls of old tires and I do the same for my boat trailer tires because they tend to dry out and crack sitting so long. One time my windsheild wipers froze. It turned out the rubber bushings at the pivot point dried out. I coated them with Vaseline and they never failed again!

"The water pump "pee hole" simply lets you know the water pump is working." Partially true. You do address it in you comment. I have a story relating to this. Scenario: I was a captain for 30 years., One job (Viking 65'..The old Gulfstream Vikings) We had Nova RIB with Yamaha 75 we just obtained, used in OK condition. The motor RAN fine, and pissed water fine, but would overheat. (Ocean Reed Club in Key Largo) I thought the stream was pretty strong. So...confused. Turns out that the motor had sat for a while. The impeller had taken a "set" and was not pumping at 100%. The shop told me this. Fort Lauderdale repair shop big dollars later, and we had a new impeller. Issue solved. I always serviced my little 2 stroke Evinrude impeller. I had to have a real shop deal with the 75hp 4 stroke. You drive it to them in the Intracoastal(near Pier 66) and they take the whole RIB out of the water to work on your motor. I bought a sweet SS prop and fixed up the RIB. All new special ordered SS fasteners that did not rust at ALL. New bench seat. Turned out to be AMAZING for the Bahamas. GPS, fire extinguisher, depth sounder...etc. Never a problem after that. Fast, handy and reliable.

Growing up in the 60's we had a 5hp Evenrude...just that and NO boat. Once a summer, Dad, me, my two brothers, and a few of our friends would take it to Kennerdell, PA. We'd rent a small boat for the day and spend it on the Allegheny River. I wouldn't trade those memories for a million bucks. I'll never forget when Dad told us the motor was broken and too expensive to fix. I never knew why and thought my Dad was being cheap. Well, I hope the tribute to his family is better represented than a little 70 year old 2-stroke motor. I don't think a thing his father or grandfather bought is what one would call a tribute to the family. It was something that sat in the garage and collected dust for 50 years. Maybe if it was a legendary airplane or vehicle his pop or grandfather used in their family run business. But, he barely remembers seeing this hobby motor run. Probably not very impactful on his family's heritage. My advice would be to sell it if he is not going to use it. Many lakes outlaw the use of 2-stroke motors and they are becoming white-elephants and just more junk to get rid of.

Dude, you have to fill the gear oil from the bottom! Till it comes out the top, then put the screw in the top, then screw the bottom! It helps to release air pockets when filling. You most likely have air pockets in it right now. Sorry for the negative comment, the 2 videos on this motor are great! Glad you saved it, it's super cool!
@perotekku
@perotekku 2 ай бұрын
As somebody who's done a lot of fills on outboards, it depends. The "fill from the bottom" originally came from outboards from the 40s and earlier, that took grease in the gearcase. Filling from the top could trap air in the bottom where the gears live, and the grease wouldn't flow down. However every outboard from the 50s to the present use gear oil. Filling from the top is perfectly acceptable, as any air will work it's way out, and the gears will be perfectly fine.

Before working on outboards, he was an aircraft mechanic in WW I working on Jenny's or so I was told. The folks at Airline outboard motors in Houston made him retire, but would save some of the old stuff for him for when he felt like going up there and working on something. Ah, the good old days. When refilling the lower gearbox, it is much easier to fill from the bottom plug (that you also use to empty the gear oil. The heavy oil is thus squeezed into the gearbox until it gets to the to fill hole. then quickly screw in the bottom plug and then the top one. This way you can be sure that it is actually full of oil rather than an air lock giving a wrong impression of full oil.

I learned it from evinrude owners manual it says fill from bottom oil drain hole squeeze tube untill oil drips out top oil plug then put plug in bottom first I remember our 1964 75hp took 2tubes and my 1977 115hp also took 2 but my Johnson 40 took 1 and my 1980 175 hp took 3tubes

Also you can have some vaseline on your finger and plug the bottom hole and then put the plug in.

Better to screw in the top one first, to not let air in. It runs more slowly out the bottom hole that way.

Squeeze into bottom hole, leave the bottle nozzle in, fill to spill, install top plug then bottom plug. Owners manual.

Well THAT brings back some memories. When I was growing up my dad had a 1950's Johnson 5 HP that looked a lot like that one. I remember him throwing it in the trunk of the car and going to the lake and renting a boat and going out for the day fishing.

I watched all of the videos. I am 73 and in the early 1960's my Dad and brother inlaws went to Lake Wenatchee to go trout fishing. My Dads brother loaned that same outboard to us to mount on the rental row boat we rented from the resort. The four of us motored out a couple of miles then the motor stopped working. I was the youngest so I got to row us back into the resort. I kept looking at that Jonson motor while rowing with disdain that it left us stranded once we motored so far out on the lake.

Very nice to see you got it working again. For myself I'd just be happy to see the moving parts, gaskets, etc fixed up so that you, or someone, can use the engine without worrying about it throwing the prop or coming to some other sort of grinding, catastrophic halt. Fixing up the casing, new decals, etc. would be losing the character of the motor. It should look banged up. Regardless of what you decide to do I think it would be fascinating to see it.

Quick tip for replacing recoil rope. My first job, at 13 was in a small engine shop. Old Joe taught me how to service recoils. One point he reinforced, was when you knot the rope, light the bitter end and let it burn until it just begins to contact the knot. This causes it to melt into the knot and it will NEVER come lose on its own. Great series, I'm enjoying it very much. Thanks!

I have a service manual for Johnson motors covering that motor and all their motors from the beginning and can get you information if needed. You did a good job rebuilding the carb, according to the ones I have worked on. The idle rotary valve is tricky, but when working , will let it idle at a put, put, put. Points and Coils are available yet, Sierra has them.

After a hard day power washing at home , I must say these two videos have me full of admiration for your effort patience and skill . My father used to have an old British seagull outboard and this video has brought back some good old memories . Your determination to get the Johnson running again was resolute , just amazed at the lathe skill and ingenuity whilst lapping the float seat . You now have a new subscriber . PS Do not turn mutton into lamb , many a good tune was played on an old fiddle .

Having spent a lot of hours running a motor exactly like this, some thoughts: 1) Both needle valves need to start at about 3/4 of a turn. 2) as you run it, you will need to adjust both needle valves and the speed (timing & throttle) control. 3) Depending on clogging, the fuel filter may stop passing fuel at 1/2 tank.

I grew up with this engine! I raked an entire resort to get it when I was in 5th Grade got it home and had to pull the carb and clean all the fuel passages in the carb, the fuel lines and tank, got the engine fired up and the carb adjusted and good for the next 10 years running the engine on a 10 ft flat bottom aluminum boat. When I was in high school I was duck hunting and tilted the engine up when I got to my hunting spot and it was cold out and I froze the cooling impeller I noticed the engine getting warm and no water coming out the cooling dump so I ended up rowing home. This STILL IS one of the best old engines ever built in my eyes, although I have updated and run all 4 strokes Mercs today I still take my old Johnson out and fire it up every year just because its such and old friend in my life!!!

hmmmmmmmm. Sounds like it is running on one cylinder. Have you checked? As far as parts go those engines are very plentiful. No lack of parts for them. That particular engine has a nice patina to it though. Personal decision on your part but I really would check both cylinders to see if they are firing.

Also, if I pump the primer a lot, it will spray a fine mist out of the hole on the back of the engine where the low speed screw is located, called the rotary vane pump in the manual. Is that normal?
