I recently visited the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin Manitoba Canada and I was able to drive Versatile 1080 AKA Big Roy. Big Roy was a concept tractor built in 1977 and was later restored in 2016.

Big Roy and a couple Big Buds in one trip? That's a good trip.

I worked for Versatile for a few years and every time I walked past Big Roy I thought, what a shame to have it just sit there. It should be in a field pulling gear.

Huge but beautiful machine!!! Nick Welker sent me...dig this machine. Looks like it's a manual shift 2 sticker like many of our old trucks here in the Hawaiian Islands. She's a beauty!!! I'd love to refit Welker's Versitile. After seeing a 13spd in one the Welker's Big Bud's I'd love to drop in a Great Lakes 3408 Cat V8 to a Mack RQ 720 into drop down gearbox to some Timkin axles...maybe extend the rear to accept tandem Timkin Rears. Don't know much about farm equipment, but do know my trucks. I drove with every Class 8 diesel engines...Detroit from 6-71 to 12V-92TT, Cummins from the NH220 up to the NTC444 & my ALL TIME FAVORITE Cat 3406 up to the 3408. Shifted Roadranger's from the 8spd to the 18spd...but I prefer the RTX 14615 & the RTO 14615 when driving with the Cat engines. But my ALL TIME Favorite are the Dana Spicer 5X4. I thought the Stieger's & the Big Bud's were big that thing f###ing HUGE!!! Remind's me of the TEREX rock trucks we use in Mass Excavation!!! Good Video Mike!!! Aloha, Chief

600 ish HP and 40 years later thats what just about all high end 4wd tractors are these days
@RJ1999x5 жыл бұрын
A huge difference though. The 600 hp of today wouldn't pull 1/2 the load of 600 hp of the 1970-80's
@Kopjar15 жыл бұрын
Like a new 600 horse quad track, little tiny engine needs to be working its bag off to maintain that power where as this 1150 would just play with anything you could hook up to it.

That tractor looks awesome it should have gone into production I know for a fact and if I had a farm I definitely would purchase this type of tractor because of the versatility 4 axle that means it won’t get stuck easy and has plenty of power for pulling!

nothing like a Big Roy! I heard a rumor that was a 2nd one that was built and is somewhere in Colorado . . . not sure if this is true.

@MustangsTrainsMowers5 жыл бұрын
I wonder how the field testing went with it? From what I have seen in videos you can do better with LSW tires than tracks.
@justinstearns97235 жыл бұрын
If I remember right they had trouble with tires not holding up on it, Which isn’t too surprising given that it has to steer 4 axles at a time.

When I used to go up there for a week with my grandparents. Grandpa had adopted a john deere D that we put through the parade every day. The rumors where the big roy design never took off due to it trying to pull its tires off the bead with implement in the ground. Is there any truth to that rumor?

Is Big Roy the largest farm tractor or is Big Bud the largest farm tractor? Both have videos claiming they're the largest. Both look very impressive. Wikipedia say it's the Big Bud though. Not taking a side with either, I'm just curious to which is indeed the largest. 🤷♂️

What was the idea behind this concept? What jobs was it intended for?
@jeepanimal29434 жыл бұрын
I cannot prove or disprove this information, it is only what I have found in my own asking of the question.. "Why didn't they continue?" I believe there might be a marketplace for these monsters today...But, basically, it was intended for large operations in the Canadian and American mid West, the same thing that the Big Buds were made for. But this one was canned by the factory as a possible product line, because there were no implements large enough to tax it's power. Again, I cannot prove or disprove this information, it is only what I have found in my own research.

Ok Mike Less. This is the first vid of you I have watched. I love that you, MN Millennial and Welker Farms have come to Canada. I know that you guys even How Farms Work adhere to Canadian driving laws yet with that said you break the most Canadian law of all, grammar. "Anyway" is not plural. It is not anyways. I cringed when auto correct didn't even correct that. The word is "Anyway". The only farm youtube channel I watch that gets this correct is MN Millenial. My only rant. Good vids other wise. I would say I put in my two cents, but us two color flagged northerners stopped using the penny a couple of years ago. So take my nickel sense. BTW the only reason this comment was edited was to make sure my grammar was correct.

Does anyone know why it never went into production? Was it not built quit right for the job? Most today have two axles 8 tires rather than four axles 8 tires: could that be a big extra expense? Also that many wheels over the same spot might be a compaction problem..... Still it would of seemed to me that it would of had a place for some kind of job!
@lynwessel24712 жыл бұрын
Seems like an impractical design for only 600 hp compared to the Big Bud and Rite tractors. Steiger had a twin engine prototype at Farmfest in the mid 1970s but scrapped the design and unfortunately also the tractor.

Made in 88 at Versatile when Ford New Holland owned it. The only one ever made just like Big Roy! Last year Big Roy pulled the TA78 in the four daily parades. I got it lined up for my buddy to drive it in Saturdays’s parade! Here’s a video I made of cell ph video clips. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fp9igtWW05bVZIU.html
