In need of lumber to continue building his pole barn workshop, Pa Mac tries a simple method for turning trees on his property into boards. Watch as he demonstrates simple techniques of using chainsaw mills to make homemade lumber for the small farm or homestead.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes regularly. (As long as Pa Mac's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)

It's nice sometimes when you can look back at your childhood and see survival skills you learned. I didn't know it's called skidding though. When my step father hooked up the tongs and the boom to the tractor and showed me how to hook the tree, he expected me to hook the trees and posts when I was available. I was as young as 7. No harm done in showing the child the way through the expression of working safely how dangerous heavy equipment can be, but at the same time sharing the knowledge and experience to grow confident in doing things. Hands on works remarkably well, just take care.

Hey, Ian Thanks for the kind words! As for the chainsaw seen in the videos so far its a very old Jonsered 670 Champ.Twas old when I got it but we did so much together. It finally died (may have its funeral in upcoming episodes so be watchin)its replacement is a Stihl MS460;Much of what you see me doin with it can be done with hand tools but the blessing of a chainsaw is time savings. For a little more on chainsaws, check out the lumber article at the FHC website under "buildin or makin" Yours Pa Mac

Enjoyed the video. Wife liked the background, she always gets on to me for watching videos with saws or loud engines. Years back when I was strong man I tried the Alaska experience in sawing. I was use to handling hay all day and other work. I only needed that one Alaskan experience to do me in. I saved up a bought a Norwood lumber mate. It's nothing like watching TV while laying in a recliner but it's a dream compared to an Alaskan mill. Several companies sell band mills that one man can carry into the woods and are also really affordable in price. I use the Norwood a lot or I'd have gotten a small potable mill. Just comparing running cost between chain or band makes a big reason to go to bands. Oil, and gas is cut to near nothing using a 6.5 HP Honda clone engine. You probably already know all these facts. Watching this brought back all those scary thoughts of chain saw milling. It was a well done video and enjoyed it.

I use a bunch (5) of pre-cut sticks about 12" x 1" x 1/4" instead of wedges to keep my cut open. I found the wedges can lift the back of the board where your jig is resting and change your cut angle.

You mastered slowing the tempo of the song to the slowing of your own weary bones at the end of the sawing. Kudos, that was a stroke of genius. Also, thank you for saving me from my dream which would have become a nightmare of doing the same you did. I think I'm bringing my logs to a sawyer and save my body for the hoisting and hammering of building my pole barn instead of what you did. But it sure was fun watching you do that.

using sticks the same size as the width of the chain, makes a good cut. but if you must use wedges, then only put them in the same width as the chain, and no further. good cutting skills you got there. definitely not acting, that is real life workout. awsome video !!

I have an 18in bar and a ripping blade coming in Monday along with the little red saw guide. Got a 4ft thick cedar laying on its side. There will be a lot of lumber come out of this tree. Yeah it will be a lot of work but otherwise I am looking at hundreds of dollars to get it otherwise. Its all clear too.

Thanks for the really nice home grown video. I've been using the Alaskan Mill for years with great results and have never found any benefit in rocking from side to side. A steady forward motion has always given me a much smother cut, just as long as you maintain the optimum sharpness and the proper angle of the top cutters. Ten degrees or less, but filed consistent and accurate for all the teeth. Inserting wedges or spreaders is important so the chain does not cut into the portion already cut and cause added grooves. I always use my guide bars, not just for the first cut, but for every subsequent cut in order to get the best and truest surfaces. Just a few thoughts that might be helpful, even for some of the "Old Timers" from Frank Crane in California.

Thank you for the videos and information. I like learning how other folks do things and the video with the 3,4,5, mathematics is very helpful. I too will soon be building a small barn to house my critters and critter stuff. I plan on using the new found math as it seems to work really well for you and it sounds just as simple as using the old framing square. Good luck on your projects, I look forward to seeing your next video.

Great videos, super informative, inspiring. I like the way you break it down and show the steps. I kinda cringed when I didn't see any ear-protection. Not trying to turn your videos into a safety bulletin but figured Pa Mac would like to be able to hear his grand-kids down the road. Keep the vids coming.

No need to cringe, there, 39knights! I bet it's hard to see that toilet paper stuffed in my ears. Not the kind of close up I thought would look appealing, though. Even so, it probably won't be the chainsaw that diminishes my hearing, it'll be the old 12 gauge shotgun. But having seen our own aging parents love and desire for quiet, the grandkid's noise toned down a bit may not be a totally negative loss. I'll still do what I can with the toilet paper, though, to keep hearin'.
