When our ram became dangerous for us and the kids to be around, we knew something had to be done. We didn't want to sell or cull him so we experimented with the Ram Shield from Premiere One. And it worked!

Wow that shield really helped. We have a ram that likes to charge us. We have heard that if you spend to much time with the ram, the ram will look at you as if you were one and the same, kinda like a dominance thing. Thanks for sharing.

Aggression is an inherited trait. Through selective breeding, it can be reduced in livestock. - I don't breed rams that show any aggressive traits. They go directly to the freezer.... I can walk out in the bachelors pasture and not have to worry about anything, my rams are like big dogs..... A couple of rules for raising rams - DO NOT PLAY GAMES WITH YOUNG RAMS.....And, when you pet a ram, DO NOT PET THEM ON THE HEAD, it provokes their butting instinct! You're unintentionally creating a future problem! If you must pet them, scratch them on the chest or up on their shoulders, they really like that.... These shields can be trimmed a little, on the sides, for a better fit and little better side vision - and they work great to keep rams from killing each other too.

@@kyle18934 Normally, if you don't make a pet of the ram, or EVER pet the top of the head, and keep a healthy respect for you, they won't butt you. Mainly they do it, if they are too friendly with you. Better they run from you, not at you for your safety.

@@crenaud590I have one he is scared of me but one time I saw him butt a tree and the amount of power he had in that headbutt I became scared of him ever since he is still scared but evertime I look at him am scared asf am scared to turn my back or even bend down around him

Our rams like to be rubbed. I have three large Corsican/Dall rams and they break 4" posts like toothpicks. they want to be rubbed every morning. Sometimes they bump me or kick me with the from hoof to get my attention. I have to be really careful around them. They do not know their own strength. They are at 1.5 curl on each side.

@@kyle18934I have a ram sheep still more powerful than his i think his genetics is a blackbelly sheep his body is so wide and his head is so wide too I can tell that thing is powerful

Those things are great. He can’t hit what he can’t see. Best to hog-tie or tether real short to a post - so you can adjust the straps while ge’s rendered less dangerous. Like people - some rams are tough-guys and some are more mellow, but you never NOT keep an eyeball on even the sweet ones - especially during rut. Mine are all haltered so I can get a grip with arthritic hands. Live with ‘em long enough and you can read their minds just watching them - if they start getting an idea to test you. I use a pole, but swap it sideways so my “horns” look wide and intimidating. I also carry a white rag in my pocket, cause any emergency deterrent while I’m letting birds out the shed - suddenly yanking that rag and flicking it at their face - tends to send them off across the pasture. Better he’s way over there - than blowing my knee or cracking my hip.

No, not all the time. Just when we are going to be working with them or moving them daily. He's in a large pasture right now so we took it off since we don't need to be close to him right now.

Any male breeding animal is dangerous at breeding season. Do you leave the ram shield on all the time or only when your in with him?

It's not on him right now because he's in a big open pasture. But when we were moving them every day he was wearing it so we could get in there. I filmed this several weeks ago. He got used to it after the first couple of hours.

Is it possible to control the aggression of the Ram by pinning him down to the ground everytime he attacks? I mean any way to show him he is not the Alpha around? Or would they still keep attacking?

Good idea. We have tried this also and it will put him in his place a little while and then he rams again.

@@ShelterMountainFarm I actually figured out something.... I figured I would share .... while I was giving our ducks fresh water o realized he doesnt like getting sprayed with water I then put some in a spray bottle lol he hates it he will stop right in the middle of a charge or head butt lol

Searching KZfaq to see if there was anything to help us with our ram slam situation. We have had beautiful flock come from him. He is gorgeous, but while we had him in stall, separated, from ewes, family member thought to rub and push on his head, as he is so loveable, with clear direction from myself and my wife, not to do so. Well since he has been back with his girls since fall, we have had been challenged. 1 morning they broke out of fenced area while I was awav @ work. My wife knew she had to get them back in, as we don't trust him anymore. As she approached, he took a second to think, yes I think I will slam her instead of walking through the gate with the ewes. My wife was oil pulling at the time she saw them. All she could think to do was blow out everything in her mouth at him. :) It worked, he turned and quickly went through gate to meet up with ewes. Thank-you for the water suggestion as we wait now for a sheild. We have been wondering how we where going to keep working around him. Otherwise the freezer is his next stop. Thanks also for the video shared and your transparency, this is very helpful.

I've got a yearling that's turning mean he's starting to get horn so he thinks he's a big guy if you don't stand up to them they could really hurt you and even kill you ! I'm selling him this winter !

This never happen with goats. I raised goats for more than 30 years , and never encounterd an aggressive goat buck, yet I hear a lot about aggressive rams.

I had a very aggressive Nigerian Dwarf buck. Probably our fault because we played with him rough as a baby. He destroyed everything. Like everything...he broke a horn trying to kill a tree.

Would putting a shock-collar on those testicles stop a ram in mid charge? 😉 Seriously, I wonder if a shock-collar (on the neck) would distract/deter them? If Tesla can make collision avoidance systems for cars, you'd think someone could make something that would automatically give a ram a shock when it simultaneously accelerated while dropping its head.
