@user-pl4yq1oc1y
@user-pl4yq1oc1y 3 жыл бұрын
Ypure probably thinking about cotton jersey :) I would urge you to try to find some secondhand or go with an ethically produced modal(type of rayon/viscose) instead because its much better for the environment and the communities where the fabrics are produced (cotton needs a lot of pesticides which seep into the waters where its grown and processed and enters the water systems and is poisonous to both wildlife and humans who drink it. Similar issues come with 1st generation viscose)

Can you do one on how to source sustainable fabrics besides natural fibers? From what I've researched deadstock isnt very sustainable unless the fabric is damaged or warped in some way. I like sourcing secondhand fabrics for personal use but they rarely come with a content label so it wouldn't be legal to sell..

@@prb16 I buy secondhand fabrics when I sew because I'm not selling it. It's illegal to sell clothes without content label/ wash tag, so that would make a problem. I would love to start a small local secondhand made to order brand as a small side hustle mostly for the sustainable side and not for profit, but the logistics are hard with these rules. In-person thrift stores sometimes carry fabrics, either scraps or if people stop sewing etc. Same goes for online thrift stores. They both also usually carry a huge range of bedsheets and curtains etc. I received about 5 meters I think (for 15£) of a gorgeus daisy embroidered fabric yesterday that had been guest bedroom curtains and I cant wait to make a cute dress out of it for summer. But I couldn't sell it because of the lack of fiber content even though it's in great shape and I have wash tested it etc. Hope that answered it, but feel free to ask more if I was unclear :)

Hi there, you put Viskose under synthetics, but actually it is made from wood. If it is sustainable is a whole other question, though. That depends on the production process. Anyway, thank you so much for these videos. 💚💚💚

Viscose is a manufactured cellulosic fiber. It derives from wood, but requires some serious chemical processing to become a fiber, this is likely why she listed it under "synthetic." However...technically , that is not correct. There are two categories of fibers, NATURAL and MANUFACTURED. Natural fibers include cotton, linen (made from flax, hemp or bamboo), silk, wool, alpaca, and leather. Manufactured fibers are either SYNTHETIC (made from petrol) or CELLULOSIC (made from wood pulp). Synthetic fibers include polyester, nylon, spandex, acrylic, and imitation leather. Manufactured cellulosic fibers include rayon/viscose, lyocell/Tencel(TM), and modal. Fun facts: Lenzing makes a sustainable Viscose fiber, branded Ecovero(TM). www.ecovero.com Organic linen (dew retted) is the most sustainable fiber. Cotton is the third most genetically modified crop on the planet (after corn and soy). 100% recycled polyester exists and is considered sustainable as it GRS certified using post-consumer bottles to make the fibers. There are a lot of textile innovations in the realm of sustainability! Natalia, cheers to you for doing your part and being an advocate! Keep up the good work!
