The 80s were a time when nearly all of the fashion trends that people love to hate were created. Hair was teased and permed to get that classy Afro style, make up was more like face paint and unplucked eyebrows were trendy. The time that fashion forgot is a phrase suited to the 80s, as nearly all common laws of fashion were broken & torn into minuscule pieces. MTV was a major influence for 80s fashion, as well as TV shows such as 'Dynasty' and 'Dallas'...

Basically back then your clothes revealed who you were. People often were experimenting here and there. A kid in our HS died a lock of his hair blue, someone else covered their denim jacket in safety pins. Rolled or cuffed things (jeans, jacket sleeves, etc) were very popular as were ripped jeans, often with a big hole in the knee. I still have a sweater that is very 80's looking--basically maroon background with blue and yellow stripes. For some reason I won't get rid of it--who knows it may come back in style... A few years ago I saw a lot of 80's toys re-emerge (rubix cube, rainbow brite, my little pony, ninja turtles, and yes cabbage parch kids) I have to admit I was a bit sad when the 80's fashion faded into the "gunge" era of the early 90's,,,

Was also a teen in the 1980's - grew up in Cape Town - was the BEST time in my life - the teased hair, the leg warmers - the shoulder pads - we would not go out on a night on the town without our shoulder pads - what great days - my teenage daughter loves the dress style of that time and often looks for "vintage" 1980's clothes - I wish I had kept some of the things :-(

I grew up in joburg, but my late teenage years were spent in Australia.. what a lack of imagination and style! I grew up in the wrong era and the wrong country!! lol. Love that 80's stuff! best music too!

Another huge trend in the 80's were polo shirts .Lacoste with the iconic alligator,Ralph Lauren with the polo player. I still wear those. They are a classic that never goes out of style. Other trends were Boat shoes without socks, Members Only Jackets,Satin jackets, Jean jackets, bomber jackets. A lot of the stuff in the photos were for flashy people or entertainers. Most people dressed toned down. Women did have the big permed hair and would maintain it with hairspray and hot rollers etc...

We had so much fun back in the 80's. You were not able to sit in a bedroom clicking on a 'like' button you had to get out and experience things. so we spent more time out and about visiting people, going to gigs and stuff like that.

I think the illustrator Patric Nagel captured the 80´s visual style rather well with his drawings of white androgynous womens faces. The 80´s was all about celebrating, it was very colorful and it was cubism, patterns, triangular shapes and hard lines. Both in art and fashion. The movie and music industry influenced the kids more than today I think. You had Prince, Madonna, MJ, the synth groups and the "puddle rockers". The word glam comes to life. A great time.

People hate on the clothes we wore in the 80s, yet half that shit has come back into fashion. Especially the whole Flashdance and Madonna looks. The 80s were just fucking awesome...ya had to be there lol.

At last!! Someone who got it right. I had dress similar to the one at .51, the white dress with all the toil. I felt like Cyndi Lauper. I wore that dress to every discotech I could find. I miss that dress.

the moniker "the time that fashion forgot" is about the dumbest thing to say about the 80's. All of the more influential trends today come from the 80's. Mens shoes for women like Doc Martens, skinny jeans, oversized coats… the worst fashion came out when I was a teen in early 00's. Thats when we got hiphop, lowriding bootcut jeans, showing underwear( remember visible thong straps?)… guys especially looked like crap. I do hate the bright make up though.

Great track choice. Gary Numan rocking the burgeoning New Romantic look even in '79, the year of the track's release. Sounds more modern than it was, but then so did Kraftwerk's stuff.

With the exception of parachute pants and shoulder pads, I think the 80s had some cool fashion trends. At least people tried to be different and it was colorful. I even like acid washed jeans.

sooooo totally agree with you on this!!!! Women had an imagination back then and they were not afraid to use it!! And have you noticed in the videos of the 80s yearbook, that when the girls graduated they looked like women...they didnt still look pre-pubescent! It was the greatest decade ever and i am glad that I lived thru it. Proud even. IN fact i got up and crimped my hair this morning with my 80's crimper...lol!!! My teen and tween went nuts and want theirs done now...lol. blessed be!

The decade won't change your perception on life you will be just as miserable back then as your are now, their were teens who said the same thing you did saying they wanted to be in the 60s. Every decade has its downfall and uprising but none is perfect.

Man I wish i got to experience 70/80's.. The fashion and lifestyle seemed to be so uniqe.. Today we don't have anything worth remembering. Life back then seemed just much more enjoyable and peaceful at the same time.. Today we are lonely amongst big, crowded cities

I kind of liked the early to mid 80s - really from about 1979 to about 85 or 86. The fashion and music was more interesting. 86-to about 92 it just got really bad in every which way possible.

I love the 80's, I'm actually looking for vintage clothing from that era. All the trends introduced by Madonna, Cindy Lauper and Blondie to name a few were genius and unpredictable. There is nothing to make fun of (maybe the hair) What's memorable after the 90's to today? nothing!

I'm a teenager that loves 80's fashion ,and I wish that I was born in 70's to relive my teenage years in the 80's. I just simply loath today's fashion trends. Now a days you see males dress like wannabe gangsters with their underware showing while, the girls dress like sluts from the streets. I only wear hand-me-downs and my favorite classic rock band t-shirts. I don't want to follow what's hot or trendy.

At least the 80's had some style to it. There is NOTHING fashionable about walking around with your pants hanging off of your ass and the crotch dragging the ground.
