The fashion week tents have been packed up and the models sent home until the next collection debuts, but one deeply entrenched industry trend shows no sign of stopping: Fast fashion, which has become one of the biggest sources of pollution in the world.
According to a recent report, the textile industry emits more greenhouse gas emissions than international shipping and aviation combined. And the amount of waste the industry generates, as well as how much water and resources it uses, is increasing.
Since 2000, global clothes production has more than doubled, and the average person now buys 60 percent more items of clothing every year and keeps them for about half as long as they did 15 years ago.
In the USA, over 85 percent of those clothes end up in a landfill.
China, which produces 50 percent of the world's textiles, and imports the largest amount of recycled clothing, has been dealing with pollution from the industry for decades: Most recycled clothing from around the world is up routed there and turned into recycled yarn. But starting this year, China will begin implementing a ban on the import of 24 solid materials, including textiles.
Nate Herman, the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain for the American Apparel & Footwear Association told VICE News things are going to get much worse. “They have cut the source materials for recycled fabrics. It will have a very negative effect on our efforts to make the industry more sustainable,” he said.
But recycling clothes currently is extremely difficult - much of our clothing is from blended fabrics or synthetic materials, meaning that it is often more time and resource intensive to recycle them than to just produce new clothes.
Some experts, such as Ellen MacArthur whose foundation is leading the charge on creating a circular economy for textiles and who estimates that waste generated from textiles is worth $500 billion a year, believes that the fashion industry needs to go beyond just better recycling.

I highly recommend everyone watch the documentary 'The True Cost.' It's really eyeopening how the fashion industry not only contributes to pollution in the environment but also the exploitation of impoverished workers. It really is an industry problem, and I hope they integrate the circular economy asap. Things regular consumers can do: don't buy shitty cheap things you know will fall apart in several washes. Only buy clothes you REALLY love. Buy versatile items you know you'll get a lot of wear from. Buy from local boutiques if you can afford it, or vintage. Trade clothes you no longer love with friends.

Also any clothing you no longer need that you cant trade with friends should be donated to thrift shops and such, not just thrown away.

Consumer activism isn’t very effective though. Building an alternative industry by and for the working class where the consumer, the worker and the person subject to the environmental effects are all one is a useful innovation.

Allie Doak I completely agree, that's why I mentioned it was an industry problem first. I think "by and for the working class" is the ideal we should be striving for but the fashion industry has a tight hold on... the whole world. For example, clothing has become extremely devalued, so not many people would be willing to pay for a garment created by people paid a living wage. People who sew their own clothing with usually sell it (rightfully) for $100s online but we're so used to a dress being ~$50 at h&m that their fair price seems like a ridiculous purchase. Pre-WWII clothing was seen as an investment and we don't have that view of clothing anymore.

These are simply over-exaggerations and lies. As a person who works in the fashion industry (also modelled for Balenciaga, D&G, etc...) I know a few things. Don't be so easily fooled, you people out there! It's sensationalist journalism, nothing less nothing more.

I have a Nautica Sweater polyester, MADE IN USA, that my metrosexual, fashionists brother in law was going to give away in 2008 to charity. I grabbed it as I just came to snow country and needed a sweater right away. It has been through the washing machine and dryer about 100 times since then: still looks like brand new. I have a similar situation with a Timberland made in USA Tee shirt I brought in Wrentham Village, MA in 2003. The print is still on it after many cycles in the washing machine. Its not about the "fashion industry" its about the cheap ass clothing you get at fucking walmart, target, sears, dollar stores, that people use briefly and dump. Macy's is 50% the same. People tend to hang on and take care of expensive clothes. Its the cheap ass stuff that gets dumped, especially women's and kids clothes.
@0skele272
@0skele272 5 жыл бұрын
xev1435 Not necessarily- most of the ‘fast fashion’ issue is because fashion influencers, young people who want to be like them, shopping addicts, etc buy wayyy too many clothes (most often expensive ones) and then not use them again because they’re constantly buying new things

Textile industry is covering the world, clothes are a necessity for everybody without which we cannot work it is not fashion but a basic need. Clothes doesn't last ages but after a year gets damaged torn and worn out therefore people buy new clothes to cover themselves. Old clothes as rags can be used for cleaning purpose.
