This was so nice to watch as a beginner - just reading a definition often doesn't do it for me, just like you mentioned with deconstruction - it often sounds overwhelming. You did an amazing job explaining things in my opinion. I've been interested in fashion for more or less a year and it still feels like there's too much going on and understand at once, often to the point that it feels intimidating. I've been meaning to start reading and get more involved and educated, but the school being very demanding makes me exhausted all the time, fortunately your videos are a very good way to feel like I'm actually moving towards being knowledgeable.

Hey, Bliss! ;-) Nobody ever mentions it so I have to tell that the word "vintage" comes from a contraction of French "Vingt (ans) d'âge" wich means "twenty year old" (literally "twenty years of age"). The letter g in "vingt" (twenty) is silent, you drop the d and "vingt d'âge" became "vintage" and this is how (for a French speaking vintage clothes seller as I am) I can easily recognize and name vintage clothes (as we're in 2022 > anything before the 21st century)

I really enjoyed the way you broke things down in the video. I knew only a few of the terms (couture, creative director, and 3 others), but did not have the best understanding as to what they meant and how to put them into my own words. From what I have seen online, the terms "archive" and "vintage" are two of the most misunderstood words used by people interested in fashion. Some people think that both words are a genre of fashion, when those words are supposed to label the timeframe the pieces were made in.

I really appreciate the shot composition in this vid. You’re framed to the right, enclosed by the staircase, running directly into your left ear. The entire left side allows the contrasting focal points of the red couch and green wall to take centre stage. The narrow wall piece thingy in the background to the right frames the speaker, drawing significance despite the limited space they occupy.

As fashion is a fairly new hobby for me, I have never heard of the bias cut before. Can't really pin down, why that piece of new knowledge made me appreciate all types of garments even more, but it does. Thank you for all of this incredibly entertaining information!

Found the defenitions you gave very accurate imo. I understand that 97% of the colloabs are business associated, and there a purpose behind that which is reasonable (like, the things you mentioned), but I find that the most meaning and impactful collabs come when the two artists mutually like each other work and do not do it necessarily for money or recognition but because they enjoy working together, examples like Iris x Neutelings Riedijk, Iris x Anthony Howe, Raf x Ruby, raf x robert mapplethorpe etc.

I have to say you make some of the best videos on fashion for beginners, I learn a lot from them. I've never commented on any of your videos even though I have been watching you for a while, so this is a start.

As always it was a bliss to listen to your voice talk about theorie of fashion. Avant Garde is the most elusive term for me. I wonder if it truly exist anymore. There are only so many ways you can fashion something that covers a human body while allowing it to function and move with reasonable comfort, and that hasn't been done before.

The whole separation of creative director and designer for large brands is pretty interesting, imo. In the tiny micro-brands within alternative fashion, they're one and the same, with the designer often also being sewist, printer, and a host of other roles. It's interesting to think of a vision-first, rather than clothes-first, image of a brand-- it seems inorganic in some ways, but visionary in others.

Bias also allows the fabric to have a degree of stretch where it would normally not have much. (I sew)

If a designers aesthetic is consistent throughout their career despite the everychanging, cyclical, nature of fashion it makes sense to then consider them ‘anti-fashion’. i don’t know if my interpretation is ignorant or not but I already feel so much more knowledgeable about fashion already. fashion has always meant so much to me but now it feels like i’m beginning to really understand it, and wow is there just an indescribable joy in understanding something you love. that’s all thanks to you-so thank you!!

tbh I think both definitions of anti-fashion are pretty cool, your original one kinda reminds me of the ones for anti-humor and anti-memes, I think the one about cemented ideals is also a nifty one tho, just I appreciate your old one has a more directed view of aesthetics within pieces themselves

Deconstruction is fairly simple to explain at least in my opinion. It means taking a construct apart and looking at all the individual pieces that make it up like you would a Lego model. Sometimes taking something apart reveals things about the whole that were not immediately obvious before.

Hi. Bliss and greetings from Finland✌️ You talked about vintage. What if we add the term "timeless" to the same thought and then we look it all from the same perspective. It is in my opinion a very important addon. Cos now I think there is much less "vintage" in itself. Like Burberry and Barbour trenchcoats and even just neutral trenchcoats. They are in my opinion timeless but not always vintage and if you buy a "vintage" trench coat it is timeless.😅 I hope you catch my idea. I think there is also our culture and societys etc. that also changes it and how we look at it as a term.

Great stuff as always. I'm grappling with some of these concepts in my own writing. Sometimes you can even lose a grounded definition of what fashion is - an inherent inclination within (some of) us or an imposed commercial regime, or the negotiation between the two! I think that the two important terms of deconstruction and anti-fashion can stem from this. As someone says down below, deconstruction is lazily and easily applied to anything that shows the making process or is unfinished or undone. There's a similar lazy use in architecture. Deconstruction in this way is just a style setting like minimalism, utilitarianism, etc - effectively part of structuralism at the paradigmatic level. Malcolm Barnard's two books have a nice bit of push and pull on anti-fashion, also Ted Polhemus echoes that view of how something that is set to persist through time is anti-fashion. I've been looking at Gilles Lipovetsky's 'Empire of Fashion' - he rebuffs the possibility of anti-fashion, but I'm not 100% aligned with his stance. Again, it's about how we define anti-fashion - you were not 'wrong' in your first video. We have to acknowledge it can have variant definitions that go in very different directions.

First, I have to say thank you for creating this video. You provided so much context to a field that I’m intentionally exploring. **New Subbie** alert! I learned archive. Meaning a prior release of designer house clothing line in a given season. Like Chanel RTW collection 2021 would be considered Archive as it’s not the most recent body of work from the fashion house in the year of 2023. You confirmed Vintage for me which is a designer clothing that is 20 years or older. I didn’t know the term derived from the wine industry so that was cool. I’ll be saving and binge watching a lot of your content. ❤

great video! Although, I think we should loosen up the definition of "fashion designer" from 1 who can execute a piece of clothing from flat pattern to construction. In this day and age, a fashion designer is really anyone who can execute an idea in clothing - regardless of the means.

I only stumbeld upon this video just now but it really helped me understand some stuff deeper. I have a lecture in uni right now where we've been talking about a lot of these words and definitions but my professor doesn't seem to have the passion that you have and is really quite boring, so hearing all of this from you made it a lot more clear. I think a big part of deconstruction in the context of fashion (that Gill also discusses) is how concepts can be deconstructed and then that ends up appearing visually later on. For example a designer could potentially want to deconstruct the idea of "formality in suiting" - they might end up with a item of clothing that doesn't have any of that obvious grunge/torn up aesthetic or even a suit itself but the item is a manifestation of pulling apart that idea. The Rick sock boot is arguably a deconstruction of the dress codes of opera. Definitely agree with that comment on anti-fashion. It's got to do with not interacting with the industry or trends while maintaining a specific style more than anything else. Although I would argue that Rick Owens is not anti-fashion, while he has maintained his own style, he definitely does his own versions of trends and interacts with the Industry too explicitly. A potentially interesting note on the term avant garde is that it originally comes from warfare. When soldiers used to charge from their line or trench through gunfire and then find cover. Those who survived, typically by hiding behind somewhere raised (like a hill), are deemed the avant garde (forward or advancing guard). They then became markers for the next lot of soldiers to mimick them. So an avant garde artist is breaking new ground - and if they manage to "survive" or find something successful, it means that other artists can now follow them there. I think framing the definition within its original meaning makes it clear that process is far more exciting/challenging than the usually dry and laborious image we have for someone attempting to be avant garde.

A lot of the terminology that applies to fashion is used earlier in literature and art history. And these definitions become slippery when they move from one art form to another. For example, Susan Sontag's definition of deconstruction, that you mentioned is very similar to the definition of modern art as used by Clement Greenberg. The process and materials become the focus of the artwork rather than a theme or subject.

Another person from literary studies here. Deconstruction was Jacques Derrida's way of naming his own practice of commentary on philosophical texts. Philosophy, in his jargon, had a specific meaning associated with the late Heidegger's split between philosophy and thinking. Thus, deconstruction cannot be applied so readily to things that are not philosophy, it would necessitate some adaptation, and also because it is not a doctrine to be applied, it is not a theory. The anglophone world, especially the USA, happened to appropriate the term disregarding this consideration, distorting it to confusing, almost unusable degrees.

there might be a distinction between terms based on changes from 60s forward when distancing the terms of vintage and ready-to-wear and deconstruction are you talking about the imposition these terms have on marginalized movements versus the imposition on individuals only? also the "measurements" from bias to creative director since the 60s seems to have an undercurrent and structure of measuring culture with a critical view that spells out culture as a construction or naturally occuring i believe you are honoring the individual agency built to culture. For reference: Public health is “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private communities, and individuals.” As such, I can always find happiness in my choices as a struggling millennial committed to public health sciences and medicine (with lots of outside interests). When i see people talking about the democratization of fashion, they usually go on about how fashion ought to be accessible to everyone and should not be exclusive only to the rich. Interesting to see that the Democratization of knowledge is also a thing.

I was a runway model in the 70’s, a high-end fashion designer in the 80’s into the early 90’s, and had my own label, making one-of-a-kind pieces that sold for thousands. I was rising in the industry when one day, I ran into God. Since He was more interesting, I left the business to follow Him. But I’ve always loved design, fashion, style, color, texture, patterns, geometrics, fabrics, and character. This channel is wonderful and our brilliant host is like a professor of fashion, very intellectual but also artistic. So glad KZfaq recommended it.
