In the spirit “that it takes a village” , when a child holds the door for me I not only say “thank you,”, I also add “What lovely manners.” I feel like this can reinforce the lessons the parents are teaching. Also, at Halloween, when giving out candy, I say “what good manners” to the first child who says “Thank you” and I notice that every child afterward also says thank you. Of course , I am an elderly woman.

Saying things such as ‘what lovely manners’ to a child often ends up more patronising than polite, even if you didn’t mean it to though.

I agree, I remember my elders doing this for me. I wanted to please them with such manners, and children want attention so give it for behavior you want to see more of! Love the comment !

I think a basic etiquette form we have lost is DINING ETIQUETTE too! Basics are: No talking with your mouth full No phones at the table Being kind to the server ✨ How to hold your knife and fork How to position your drinks and pour/hold them How to sit To never EVER comment on what another person has chosen to eat negatively

People forget that last one. You don’t know what other people’s relationship with food is (EDs etc.) and you can unintentionally make people feel insecure or uncomfortable 💛

The saying you go wise with age. Isn't true I've came across individually that's are just down right rude. Then they think they are entitled to such behaviour because there older. Which is so wrong. Respect is earned.

I really like this Fashion Mumblr Finishing School idea! I personally think that these kinds of basic rules of politeness and kindness are less common than they used to be and they are something worth preserving, as I think they go a long way in making our society more harmonious! :)

It is wonderful to see someone of the younger generation concerned with simple kindness. Thank you, Josie. We surely need more of these tips in the world, especially in these difficult times in our world. The hardest irk I have is people gluing to the phone instead of listening or holding a kind conversation with the person with them. I see this so much today.

Josie, Etiquette is so important, I teach my daughter it daily. Manners are so important. I own a book on etiquette. Well worth the investment too look back on. It teaches how to set the table, respectfulness, amongst so many other thing’s. My grandparents truly were the best teachers in these traditions and I believe in passing them down. This will be a beautiful series. xx ❤️🌸

Good manners never go out of fashion! I applaud you for wanting to give a refresher about good manners, or even for some an introduction. Respect, kindness and consideration will always be appropriate, even in tense and uncomfortable situations! I LOVE the idea of an entire series... from making proper introductions to table manners and everything in between! A world with more respect, kindness and consideration is a wonderful thing! 🥰❤️🥰

Holding the door, is something I’ve always done... but my pet peeve is when I hold the door and the person doesn’t say thank you or even acknowledge you.. it drives me nuts! So rude!🙅‍♀️

I agree. When that happens to me I say to the person You’re welcome. That might get them to think next time around and say thank you. I’m from New England and people think we are cold and unfriendly but manners and respect are very important to me.

Josie Darlin, this is one of the BEST videos you've ever produced!! Kindness and respect - something we in America need more of desperately!!! Way too much anger here. Underlying principle of any interaction should be "Love your neighbor as yourself". "Treat others as you would like to be treated." Thank you for being a genuinely kind role model

Josie darling 💮 When "Proper Etiquette" became a seminar in the corporate workplace in the U. S., I realized that civilization had begun to decline... Reviving or introducing this behavior is to be applauded... When I began to travel internationally, learning to say hello please & thank you in the language of the country has always been appreciated. Being more of a diverse society it's something I choose to do locally... I find it creates a moment that leaves a good feeling between people 💞

Thank you Josie! People not holding the door is my pet peeve. I agree it’s a total deal breaker. I also get crazy looks from people when I hold the door cause I’m a women but it’s simply just being polite.

I get weird looks when I hold the door for others as if I have to go through it first. I really just like others to pass before me, just being polite. My male coworkers especially find it weird 🙊

My pet peeve is when I open the door and the people I open it for don’t say thank you or even look at you! Drives me crazy!! No manners.:(

I always try to hold a door open. Rain or shine, cold or hot. I will be holding a door for someone. My mom was so proud of me and I made her laugh one day. I had to use the restroom really bad. We had to find a gas station. By the time we got there I was in trouble. I quickly got to the door right before to others and I still held that door for them. It was close. Mom said I was probably the only person who would've stopped and hold a door open for others when they had to go that bad. TMI. I tinkled alittle before I made it back there. I'll never live that down. Luckly they both said thank you and gave me a smile. I said you're welcome 😊. I was 32. I'm 39 know. Lol

Another thing - ‘thank you’ cards! I was always taught to send ‘thank you’ cards anytime someone gifts me something and I still religiously do. However, I hardly ever receive any. It’s such a small and easy act to show that you appreciate someone spending their time and money to send you a gift ✨

It rubs me the wrong way when someone says etiquette is old-fashioned or unimportant - it is so important to make other people feel comfortable and respected, and having good manners shows that you are someone who puts in that effort. Ooo I loved this video Josie! ❤️ It’s nice to have a little reminder when morale is lower and stress is higher during this time. Interestingly, I noticed that manners are more appreciated here in the UK than they are in Canada/US which is so lovely! Door holding is a MUST in Canada, but in general our North American countries tend to be a lot more... informal! 😅

@@JosieIrons Hello Josie, I'm with young 100% on men holding the door for a woman. For me it's the little signs that will make it or break it. It's not a difficult thing to do, no matter what some people think about it by calling old-fashioned/dated, it shows a lot about a person in general - basic respect and manners.

Americans that I have come across in the UK are extremely polite, cheerful and friendly. Same for most British people too but I have come across a few that are formal but not necessarily friendly or polite.

Regarding saying "bless you" - the actual proper etiquette requires to ignore when someone sneezes. Why? Because if there is a business meeting or other professional event, the person sneezing is already feeling awkward and by saying "bless you" you are acknowledging the situation and putting even more attention to the person, who is already feeling a bit awkward. So in those situations the proper and professional way is to ignore. However, in a more informal situation, saying "bless you" can be considered a nice gesture.

I said bless you to someone who I didn't know was a Jehovah's witness and they were very insulted and asked me not to do it again. The bless you apparently has something to do with the adsumption that if you sneeze it has a devil connotation 🙄

And it's not just about feeling awkward, but if there is a meeting with 15 other people, and everyone would start saying 'Bless you!' it would take the attention from the topic of the meeting. One of my university professor taught us this, and asked us kindly not to say 'Bless you!' to each other when we have a lecture going on, it would distract everyone's attention.

@@tirsup that's just rubbish - it's not what it means at all. It's short for 'God bless you' and was said to people at the time of the Black Death (Plague) as as sneeze could be a sign they'd got it, and has been carried on to show concerns for someone.

@@aztaNoemi Absolutely right. Same with coming too late. If you can sneak in to the meeting, you do it and apologize to the professor afterwards. But if you can't sneak in and everybody is looking at you anyways, you quickly apologize for the interruption and take your seat. Nevertheless I feel like Josie is not referring to a meeting but to private situations where I feel like saying "Bless you" is the politest thing to do when you are with friends/family.

I personally really love etiquette videos, and you Josie are probably the loveliest person I have come across and I couldn't think of anyone more lovely to receive such videos from. For me its also one of the most important things to be able to teach or pass onto my children and I already have a few saved for anyone around me who might need them and I will do the same with yours. Truly to me this is such a huge blessing so please keep them coming. And this I would say, - you already smashed!

Hi all, I agree with what you all have said. I am afraid that it, speaking for the US, those etiquette lessons went by the way side when parents were practicing "new age" parenting starting in mid thur the 80s. Then late 80s through 90s when women were burning their bras (a figure of speech) plus going for traditionally men's type jobs everything from police to automotive and home improvement type chores. Then in 2000s women were joining the military. Now, that so many more of us are at home, I think Josie will get a huge interest in Mumblr Finishing School. It will be fun to watch this series. I was taught these things when I was just a tiny kid. Me and my brother knew how to act when we were out in public and at a restaurant. No screaming and running around. My mom always had someone come up to her and tell her how great it was to see 2 well behaved children. We have table manners that people still complement us on. Its sad that we are complemented on something that everyone should know.

This is the golden rule, “ All things therefore that you want men to do to you, you also must do to them.”, Mathew 7: 12, we all want to be treated with dignity and respect. I agree 100% with you I just wish people was more like that. We don’t have to all agree on things but being kind even when we don’t shows respect . Xx

So good to hear you say all this out loud! As a primary teacher and mummy to two daughters, I spend my time reminding children of these values every day! Loved this video Josie! I’m 53 and so believe in proper etiquette. I find it so sad that the younger generation has lost the use of proper etiquette. Especially here in the USA. I find it so refreshing to watch your channel and your fashion sense. Very classy. Which more of the younger generation watched your channel. Keep up the great work. Josie, i adore and respect the heck out of you for encaging us and reminding us of the importance of manners, respect. We can all use a refresher and perhaps reflect and ask ourselves, how we can improve are we making our parents / mentors proud on a daily. Every generation can benefit hearing your words. Love this series. Becoming a kind respectful human is so very important in my books, and I did a great job teaching my son. Im proud of that for sure. Thank you Josie for reminding me dont stop teaching and learning.

What a great idea Josie. Something I have noticed since COVID started is that some people have forgotten how to be courteous to others. They have forgotten how to drive and causes frustration. I also don't think the younger generation get caught basic manners and respect these days. If the only things they learn are what they pick up from 'street' talk they are seriously missing out on these important life lessons.

Coming from the younger generation, i completely agree, everyone think that it is cool to be rude but its really not, and mannerism is so much better and should be encouraged

Josie- thank you so much for reminding everyone these basic rules. It never hurts to be reminded. Please do more as it comes across very genuine from you. Second- a point about lack of eye contact...it drives me crazy as well. But please do keep in mind that many people with autism and sensory issues struggle with that. It is natural to think it rude, but sometimes there is another issue. (I say this because my son is autistic and struggles with eye contact).

I love this video and playlist idea. Its surprising to see how many of these tips are just common sense but so many people don't do them any more which is such a shame. I always try and say hello to any fellow walkers when out walking my dog. If I get a hello or even a smile back it makes me feel so good and sets me up for the day xxx

I love this! I was brought up with excellent manners and it does definitely seem to be lost knowledge. My 2 year old says "thank you" when she is given something and "you're welcome" when someone says thank you to her, if a toddler can do it, we all can right? And shouting from another room? Ooooh that really really gets to me. Its so rude, like the person doesn't think enough of me to come and speak to me. I totally agree with the door thing, no excuse for rudeness and that is a deal breaker for me. On the subject of people not making eye contact, it may not be that they are being rude, I have social anxiety which makes it hard to maintain eye contact. That being said it is obvious when someone is disengaged. Thank you for this series, you are an inspiration

Respect & kindness is something I go by everyday. Treat others the way you’d like to be treated 🌸🤍 I feel like basic manners could be overlooked especially in the US so easily due to entitlement unfortunately. Thank you for reminding everyone to be more grateful Josie! 🌤🤍

Modern women NEED this form of training. Thank You for providing it. As for manners, men need to learn it as well. I'm afraid modern society frowns on traditional manners because they were never taught them.

Loved this video, my mother went to a convent school, she had elocution lessons so when we were going up she taught us, so when I had a daughter I automatically taught her and now she has children I'm hoping she will teach them x

Loved this! 100% agree on the holding the door on a date thing, such a good indicator on whether someone has good manners or not. I think a lot of it boils down to observing and being present in the moment. Noticing the people around you, reading the room and giving people your full attention. But observing yourself too, so you can catch your reactions before blurting out the first thing that comes to your mind. It's not always easy but practice makes perfect!

About the ‘bless you’, I think it’s up to the person who sneezed or coughed to say excuse me! It came out of your body, why would I say it lol. I think it’s rude when people don’t say excuse me after their own bodily functions.

Its a great reminder to exercise these tips, most of which we know but have gotten lax with in practicing. I've always had problems remembering a name directly after I've been introduced but when you stressed how good it makes one feel, I am encouraged to put in more of an effort in this small kindness.

I agree with everything here..I was bought up with these manners.. My grandmother was very careful in introducing me to good manners..you are so right and it’s a shame some are being forgotten.

Personally, I think there is a fine line between keeping tradition alive and 'etiquette'. Much of this feels out of date to me, as you can certainly be a lovely polite person without following anachronistic customs - unfortunately, the moment someone mentions 'etiquette' my mind immediately goes to classism (aren't these just global good manners?). Alas, you also cannot guarantee that someone will respond positively to such 'etiquette'; for example a male friend of mine opened the door for a female recently, who then proceeded to lay into him for being sexist. Just my thoughts.

Proper wedding invitation wording, timeline for mailing invitations/save the date, gift giving, etc. I hope you enjoy your day.

I love love loved this video Josie! 😍 Isn’t it sad that we class general manners as being “old fashioned” or “trying to revive a tradition”. I can’t say enough how much I love that you’ve started this series! So many times in the work place I would think I’m going mad by wondering why people don’t greet one another upon first entering the room, or times my manager would do a 1-2-1 with me whilst responding to her emails, or why people seem to say please and thank you less often. But on the flip, I do need reminding to treat people with more grace on the road, my road rage is not an endearing quality. Just so grateful for this series! Thank you xxx

Josie this vlog was WONDERFUL 👏 Thank you so much for doing this . I was never blessed to have children but when our and about with nieces and nephews always made sure that they said please , thank you , opening doors etc. As well as saying hello or good morning ( especially to someone older ) was instilled in me from my parents . I could go on with examples...will end with these few things I try to live by . Show grace by remembering if that was you wouldn't you want it shown to you . Also be slow to speak but quick to hear ( listen ) JUST LOVED IT 🙏🤍🙏
