Based on the way the steel looks like after grinding my guess is that's somewhere around 800 grit which is more than enough.

Man of the north Although not certain, I guess from the sound of the steel rubbing against the stone is around 400-500 grid. Better results are obtained if the surface of the stone is well polished and oil is used instead of water.

That is the sign of a craftsman, the knowledge to find the right kind of stone and then make it a sharpening stone.

One of my favorite of the videos so far. I enjoy watching the skill of freehanding the grinder with so much precision. It takes a lot of skill and a good eye to do those things that are done here with a simple grinder

i wonder if he could cast grit in a mold like concrete....but where to get the supplies is the question in his case... an ancient method is the foot-treadle stone wheel, I think those were later cast (wheel with hole in middle)

Yeah i guess he could, but there are nothing wrong with natural whetstones. In one of his comments he is saying its quarried from the mountains so i feel its type of stuff they have used for ages. He says its type of sandstone, and i think historically it has been used lot as sharpening stone.

All you need is 1.) double cut file - for brand new blunt edge 2.) a chefic whetstone - sharpen the edge more 3.) a naniwa whetstone - don’t sharpen, just take off the heavy burr 4.) a leather strop block - take off the smaller leftover burr, won’t mess up the leather.

What an ignorant evaluation. I have made sharpening stones with nothing more than other rocks, while I was camping near a lake in the wilderness. You literally don't need any tool but the stones themselves.

😠 I had to give this a thumbs down 👎 not because the skills making the stone were bad but because you endangered a child’s sight without care, at time stamp 0:43 as you are trying to break the main stone you have children watching at eye level where the bar hit the stone, all it would have taken was for a chard of that stone to reach an eye and one of those kids could have lost an eye.
