How to build a Copper penny sorting machine, This model penny sorter is not easy to build in a day, but with patience you can build a machine that sorts with very high accuracy.

Well done sir. I dont think its idiotic at all , saying no thanx to the way overpriced machines is a win. Thanks

Great! I like the commentary at the end of the vid and the self adjusting container position for the new pennies. The container moves to a location for a perfect "bounce then in" as a newer penny comes out of the chute. Congrats!

Not idiotic at all. This is fantastic. What a cool and simple device. This is the first DIY version I've seen segregate based on weight.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I just needed the inspiration and basic ouline of what it would look like. I think if I watched a breakdown to build it piece by piece it would just confuse me more. thanks again for putting this together and inspiring all of us soon to be penny horders!

No , that is very smart an well planned out, great job, its people like you that we need to make things built in our own country, to put it in small words,,

Thank you, i wish i had others to hang out with to build things, Did you see my homemade steam generator, They say only 10% of people will survive long term after a power outage, Now i really need to work on my liquor making skills, who would want to live on without a drink!

I know I would love to have a tutorial on how any specs you can give and just an overview of the design features would be awesome! I love this idea and can see the potential it has! Any tips and information regarding the design would be greatly appreciated by others and myself who have watched this video! Thanks

YES! Please make a tutorial! I REALLY need to make one of these, and have been racking my brain over different designs and possibilities. Especially on the weighted lever and the motor. Please!
@creativeobsin5 жыл бұрын
I like it :) the fact that the "gate" have to be backwards to function better is kind of fascinating to me, but when you think about it it's actually quite logical since the leverage angle is highest at the tip. Thanks for sharing :>

Thanks for the nice comment, good luck, keep the slot in the ramp the penny rolls down as narrow as possible, otherwise the penny will want to lay over as it rolls and that will slow the penny and cause headaches. also the angle of the ramp must be adjustabile, if you look at mine there is a white knob with a long screw under the ramp to change it's angle.

what if you add another rail to the other side so as the motor pushes one side out and the other side comes in to get a penny?you would have a rail on each side. would that work?

what did you use for the fulcrum that has the counter weight and paperclip on?

Check out "Cody's Lab". He made a sorter that uses magnets to slow the copper pennies down so they fall off the very end of the rail whereas the zinc pennies keep rolling fast and fall farther away from the end into a seperate container just past the one the copper pennies drop into. Anyway...your feed system would be a perfect match for his magnetic sorter. Good video.

Haha not a waste this is a good machine based on sound principles. Nice practical engineering. Are you regularly sorting pennies with this? I would think a very large hopper would allow you to run this for a long time and sort a lot of pennies without having to be standing by
@stclairstclair12 жыл бұрын
Plexiglass, but getting the fit so the gate swings like silk and lines up perfectly without hanging up was critical in obtaining reliability, i had to wet sand the parts.

a tutorial on how to build one?, i could if you want me to, but because i built it on the fly there are no real specs, so the critical adjustments to get it to run perfectly would still be in your hands, im a mechanic and spent a few nights working thorugh it, but yes if you respond and tell me thats what you wanted.

if you still have this would you sell it???? There may be a way to make money off this great idea.
@scrapman5024 жыл бұрын
This thing works great, but it could use a modern upgrade. Get rid of the penny counterweight and paperclip scale. clip a neodymium magnet onto the end of the ramp. When a copper penny passes the magnet it will get slowed down considerably and drop nearly vertical. A Zinc penny will roll right past the magnet and fall considerably further away. All you need to do then is to put two separate jars at the end of the ramp, The copper pennies will fall into the jar closest to the end of the ramp and the zinc ones will fall into the jar furthest away from the end of the ramp. 100% accuracy. You might want to increase the pitch of the ramp a little to increase the drop speed. You can also increase the load rate into the ramp.
@stclairstclair4 жыл бұрын
Scrapman50, I cant change anything as doing so would cause my perfectly adjusted sorter to not work, I agree your plan sounds good, post a video when it's done.
@Haxpatty10 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can add 2 rails, increase the motor speed, and add a splitter for the rails. I think I might try your design my friend!
@playinlikejimi10 жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest the same, kinda. I would increase the length of the arm on the motor so it stays the same speed, but slides the grabber under the hopper twice the distance. 'neutral' will have one hole on each side, as it pulls towards the motor, one hole will grab from the hopper, as it pushes to drop it on the rail, the other holder will grab a penny, as it pulls back towards the motor again it will drop on to a separate rail. I'm going to try it when I get a chance. In short, exact same design, at the exact same rate, but will operate 2 separate rails underneath (so technically doubling the rate)

A vending / slot machine / change machine feeder uses a disc with holes in it, on a stepper, they can be shockingly fast. (think jackpot in vegas) (the coins are in tubes above the wheel of course)
@stclairstclair6 жыл бұрын
I cant drop them any faster or i will end up with a log jamb due to the fact that i have to wait a moment for the penny to pass or fall, Thanks for watching!
@Car1Sagan4 жыл бұрын
How much can you load into the hopper before it jams? Where is the video you said you'd link to that inspired you?
@stclairstclair4 жыл бұрын
Silver Slingblade With this pop bottle hopper i can stack the pennies to the rim, but they must be stacked, I would recommend going with a clear tube that would hold them neat, Fish-tank lift tubes are cheap and might work much better, The video that inspired me was "Anyonefindamerica1" But he disappeared and I've never seen him again, thanks for watching! Go look at my homemade steam generator if you like, thanks again.

Silver Slingblade , Also you need to make the ramp adjustable, if you look on mine you can see i have a white thumb screw with the bolt facing upwards on the front.

good idea, but a little too slow. It took about 30 seconds to sort 20 pennies, and I can sort an entire roll in that much time.
@stclairstclair6 жыл бұрын
I dont do enough penny's to worry about, it is very accurate though so im happy, thanks for watching!
@vernhartjr4 жыл бұрын
You got plans for this?
@stclairstclair4 жыл бұрын
vernhartjr < It was built off hand, The rail gap that the penny runs down is 1/8" the same size as the plexiglass i used for the gate, I didn't do a good job of showing it, it is the same as the fist wooden one i showed, also I never mentioned the thumbscrew I have on the ramp, you need to be able to finely tune your ramp up or down to effect the penny speed, thanks for watching.
