Thanks for your epic Sumatra travel vlog. The whole episode was fascinating and waiting eagerly for your next travel vlogging. The amount of effort you put into narrating the scenario is indeed praiseworthy.

You are patient man, Doug. I think that is essential for what you are doing. I used to use Agoda a lot. Recently I find the price changes when you click “pay”.
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 8 ай бұрын
I've noticed that about Agoda, too, and I can't quite figure it out. It's difficult to see what exactly is going on, but every time you click on the "next" button to confirm your reservation and then pay for it, the price goes up. And I can't quite figure out exactly how or why. I'm sure they add fees and taxes along the way, but there are other stages where the price seems to jump up for no reason at all. The price will be listed at 80 RM, and then you click on it, and on the next page, the price will be 95 RM. And then they add the fees and taxes at the next window, and the price is now 115 RM. And then when you finally hit the Payment button, the price goes up another chunk of ringgit. I don't remember it being this bad before. And when the price goes up from window to window, they don't actually list what has been added to the base price.

I am missing the cc question, Doug. But the vlog has got. the amount of views which all of your Videos deserve
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 6 ай бұрын
Of course, the CC didn't exist back when I took this ferry. I hadn't come up with the idea yet. Yes, it WAS nice to see a higher view count for a Planet Doug video. I guess the secret is that a general audience likes to see people on the move, actually travelling, and going to new places. My instinct and habit is often to stay in one place for a while, and that isn't so exciting for videos.

Some time since I last followed you . Now back to you again . Love the way you explained every single step you take and things you do in great details . On top of that , your amazing English is a great bonus , especially for us Asians . You are the best travel blogger I ever come across .

Thank you, Myanmar Mike. I'm sure I don't deserve your praise of being the best travel vlogger. I don't think I'm even a particularly good travel vlogger. 😁But I agree with you about showing things in detail. It drives me crazy when travel vloggers leave out all the details and logistics of their trips. I want to know all the details. My favorite travel videos give the whole story about the planning for a trip, getting the tourist visa, changing money, setting up their smartphone with a SIM card, buying tickets, getting to the airport or train station, etc. I enjoy it when they show all of that in the video. But it's quite rare.

Ever since 1985, they haven't changed. Makes tourists feel disgusted of them culture-vulture destination, leading to transport taking center-stage and aviators mistake their importance of transport-destination.

Congrats on getting back to Malaysia Doug. You got a beach-view hotel 😆way to go! Nice room 👍 love the sliding blue plastic door to the washroom, very practical lol. I've been very busy these past months and just been peeking into your Indonesia travel here and there.. congrats for that successful trip as well. May I suggest you get back into the company of people of your culture and understanding? Being alone too long can be stressful on the person, yet the person may not perceive the stress. You are a legend sir, Godspeed. LFP

You make a good point. In fact, if money were not in limited supply, I'd love to fly back to Canada for a visit. I feel like I could benefit from touching base with my roots and being around people like me. When you are overseas for a long time, I think you start to lose track of your identity. You forget who you are. And in a way, you start to think you must be crazy, because no one around you shares your cultural background and your interests and views and feelings. You definitely need to touch base with your roots from time to time to stay centered. It can be stressful otherwise to be alone all the time.

I really feel you there. Thinking more about this topic, perhaps if your calling really is in Asia, you will find others there that can fill the need we described. Do you have an "anchor home" anywhere there? Chiang Mai? Mae Sot? Also, have you thought about formally volunteering with a social benefit group out there? Maybe that kind of energy can give you an added inner boost. Best to you sir. Thanks for your travel. LFP @@PlanetDoug

I remember when I was on Lombok island, eating a similar meal, the flies were aggressive and spoiled the enjoyment of the food! I’ve never experienced that anywhere else as bad!
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 8 ай бұрын
It turns out that flies are a problem in the entire area around Port Dickson. This restaurant was particularly bad, but every place I went to also struggled with flies. I don't know what it is, but there is something about this environment right on the ocean that created a large fly population. Every restaurant and cafe had to deal with them somehow. And as I mentioned in the video, they are a particularly type of sticky and brazen fly. They barely notice when you try to wave them away. You have to wave your hand over your plates like a madman for the duration of the meal. And even then, the flies just laugh at you and keep eating. I went to a very nice restaurant with my friend Daryl (WanderEats), and they had come up with a system of special tabletop fans to keep the flies at bay. Every table had a small battery-operated fan gizmo that helped keep the flies away.

I know. I keep trying to balance the time needed for living life, shooting video, and then editing video but I keep failing in the attempt. 😀 I had all these big plans for Malaysia, but I ended up not following through on any of them. I needed all my time to just edit the leftover video I shot in Sumatra. Perhaps I can reset once more and start again fresh. Unfortunately, my time in Malaysia is practically over already. I'm making plans to leave and I basically just got here. We'll see if I can manage my time better from now on...

Since 🇲🇾 and 🇨🇦 are part of the British Commonwealth group of countries. I think hopefully for reciprocality that Canadian immigration can at least grant entry to Malaysians visiting/travelling to Canada without the need of lengthy visa paperwork and give the same treatment access similar to those Singaporean passport holders.

Hello doug . I hope you are well . Thanks for the video mate . Im going to definitely plan something like this . I uave a friend who lives in pekanbaru Sumatra and plan to visit him this way . KL - PD - Dumai- Pekanbaru. Thanks for giving me this great 💡
@PlanetDoug
@PlanetDoug 8 ай бұрын
You're welcome. The same company runs ferries out of Malacca. They also go to Dumai, so that is another option. I don't know if it is easier to go from KL to Port Dickson or from KL to Malacca, but that is another option. And on my first trip out of Dumai, I rode my bicycle. I didn't take a bus to Pekanbaru. So I don't know how that works. But it should be simple enough. I'm sure there are regular buses making that trip out of Dumai. In any event, it would be a fun way to make that journey rather than just flying direct.

@@PlanetDoug Thank you . Yes exactly and definitely better than flying for sure .I googled the bus and it takes about 4 and half hours from dumai . One other question Doug .. can you bring liquids on the ferry ? I would like to stock up on a couple bottles of whiskey and a bit worried they might consficate it . Many thanks . Good luck in your travels .

No I don't get nervous. But recently a friend of mine wrote about the possibility of strangers putting drugs into one's luggage without their prior knowledge or consent. Now if I'm ever caught with such drugs in my possession, I could be in very serious trouble with the immigration officers ....
