In this video I finally test Fast Flight vs Dacron strings on one of my favorite bows. Using the Competition Electronics ProChrono DLX to test the overall performance of each using my Southwest Archery Ghost takedown longbow.
The results are eye opening to say the least. My arrow selection for this test were Gold Tip 500 spine with 50 grain inserts, and 125 grain field tips.

Another consideration might be the more forgiving the B50 is on the bow itself. 5 feet per second difference really is not a lot. I find the B50 string is "softer" shooting and prefer it knowing it is easier on my bow even though it is built for fast flight modern custom made TD RD longbow. But thank you for the demonstration Scott much appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I have used B50 and B55 over the course of time, both I have enjoyed using across all of my bows. The TD bow shoots equally well with either. You are correct 5fps plus or minus is a minimal difference, it's easy to get hung up on how fast a bow shoots, but for me it was more of a curiosity about performance and speed. The B50 is definitely more forgiving on limbs. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment my friend. Best regards.

Great video. I use B55 because it's cheap and most of my older bows need it. I just wanted to comment on the difference in speed between Dacron and FF. I found that once you start using heavier gpi arrows, like quite a bit heavier, that speed gap between dacron and FF narrows substantially. I was listening to The Push podcast and they also made a similar observation. You can get more speed again from B55, if you have correctly tuned arrows and 3" fletching.
@ScottWinters
@ScottWinters 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great comment and info my friend. I have noticed the difference in the speed gap as you mentioned when using heavier arrows. One other thing that I have noticed with FF strings is longevity of the string. For some reason I notice small frays with some of the strands. It seems to present itself after numerous shooting sessions. I shot B50 and 55 strings for the longest time and never had this issue. For my fletchings, sometime back I made the switch from 4 inch fetchings to 2.5 inch fetching. I tend to prefer those from an asthetics standpoint over performance. Out of curiosity, what's the heaviest arrow you shoot and at what draw weight? I really appreciate your time! Have a great evening. Best regards.
@kanyinak
@kanyinak 2 жыл бұрын
@@ScottWinters that's an interesting observation on string longevity. My experience is that I have had B50 and B55 strings that I would still happily shoot that are around 10 years old. I can't say the same for my experience of FF because I only switched to FF when I bought some black hunter bows this year. My heaviest arrows are around 675 to 700gn with a little over 200gn up front. They are sitka at 29.5" and Australian Victorian Ash at 31" wooden arrows. I shoot them out of a 50lb Gary Sentman custom longbow based on his Competitor model and an old Martin Hatfield TD Hunter which is around 63lb at my draw. I prefer to shoot GT 5575s cut to 29.5" with 250gn up front out of the Hatfield. They are very quick out of the old girl and heavy enough. I'm still tuning for my Black Hunters which are in the 40 to 43lb range. That's how I found myself on your excellent reviews of these bows. I just bought some Easton tribute xx75 2016s to shoot out of them so looking forward to tuning and making some arrows.

I was guessing for those speeds out of 40 pounds, you were shooting some really light arrows. I noticed down the comments you thought around 370 grains total weight. I shoot 500ish grains and get around 134-140 fps out of that weight bow on a recurve with Dacron.

First of all, I love your videos, you're doing a good job. I wondered with this test were the strings the same age? I ask as if one is new and the other has had 100 arrows fired with it then the older string would have stretched out already whilst the newer string may be stretching out. If that is so...an excuse to get the Cronograph out again ;)

You bring up a good point my friend. Honestly I did not think of that. My thought process was that the dacron had stretched and settled enough to be consistent through all shots. Great video Scott (as usual) and I agree it's not how fast or slow your bow shoots, it's all about having fun with it! I'm gonna have to maybe get one some day to see how fast my bow throws my braided fishing line strings compared to a purchased fast flight string, or dacron string ... I'm sure other factors come into play ... I hear a fiberglass arrow is slower than say a carbon or carbon fiber arrow. Then you also have aluminum arrows which I don't own, and I'm sure weight of the arrows come into play! So with all that stated, maybe I'll just stick with having fun, and not worry about the fps stuff! 😂 😆

If you are making strings yourself then imo the price against performance makes things almost unviable. A spool of B55 is like 10 bucks, fast flight materials are nearer 50 bucks,when you work out the difference in fps per buck,there is literally not much bang for the buck. 10 fps doesn't mean much at all, for hunting. ESPECIALLY when you usually need to use more silencers on the noise increase of the fast flight or D97 strings. Then you are back down to a 6 fps difference. At these arrow speeds, less noise is better than even a 15 fps increase, when hunting. If not hunting, then no worries about noise. Several of my bows are quieter with a bare dacron string, than fast flight with silencers. All of my self bows are quieter by far than any of my manufacturers bows.
@ScottWinters
@ScottWinters Жыл бұрын
Agree with you in the speed increase. Adding the silencers will slow the string down and eliminate any gains made with the addition of fast flight. Not being a hunter anymore I don’t worry to much about the noise. The noise only bothers me if I focus on it, then it’s an annoyance because it’s all I hear. I appreciate your insight and the comment my friend. I hope you have a great day. Best regards

it sounds to me that the dacron is much quieter than the fast flight. fast flight is faster but its not enough to matter. the real question is either more accurate? the ff is certainly faster but the dacron is quieter.
@ScottWinters
@ScottWinters 2 жыл бұрын
The dacron is definitely quieter than ff. As far as performance goes either will give great results. The thing I notice most about ff string is it can affect arrow flight if the arrows are not tuned to the ff string. I did a comparison and there is a very noticeable difference in how the arrows impact. Same arrows ff produces weak spine, dacron produces stiff spine. The positive is that ff definitely helps reduce hand shock in an unruly bow, my longbow is a great example lol. A few extra fps really doesn't matter. As for accuracy, either produce the same results. I really appreciate your time my friend. Have a great evening. Best regards

Good test, but... you probably should have shot the bow *without* checking the speed on each shot, i.e., have someone else record it. It's far, far too easy to adjust the anchor point or bow arm extension to add or subtract a few FPS to subconsciously conform the test results to your expectations.

@@ScottWinters Indeed. Of course, minor inconsistencies--including those due to the diminishing strength of the bowman after multiple pulls--are to be expected, and averaging of enough multiple shots can still provide a meaningful trend line. But a blind testing procedure is a critical element, and it's frequently missed on KZfaq tests of this sort. Cheers.
