I would suggest using Durabond any time you are are finishing over an odd surface, like concrete, block, wood, painted walls, ect. But only for the bed coat. I would also prefer it for all prefilling but like he said the other hot mud will work okay for that. Durabond has a lot more glue in it that makes it much better for such things. Bed coat only though. You don't want to have to sand that stuff. You'd be amazed at what you can do with some Durabond and fiberglass mesh. It really help when the top paper has been pulled off of some drywall, like when removing wallpaper.

Yep durabond is way better for prefill and bed coat. I use it when I’m doing plaster work.

I avoid using hot mud when I can as a DIYer. The 90/45/20 etc yeah, it sets up, but it's still best to let an all day cure (especially for prefilling, it's great for that). There's not much I need done that fast as I'm not a contractor. I've used all purpose over mesh just fine, but I can see why hot mud is best for mesh. It's rock hard when applied properly. Basically, patches and pre filling is it's best use for a home DIYer. Also Easy Sand 😂 , it's a bear to sand.

Except for pouring it into the sink 🤣. What i do when I use the sh*t is i treat it like sh*t and pour it into toilet bowl but while it's still soft just past the point of being workable and don't flush more than an average amount of sh*t.😆😂 then when you're done emptying your "butt" I mean bucket flush few more times...🤫👌🤣🇨🇦. Or option 2 is to clean quick setting compound to the bottom of your bucket and WALK AWAY. Then the next day or maayyyyybbe 2 to 3 times the number on the bag, bring outside and give a few light taps on the bottom of the pale while up side down and plop goes the weezel.😂🤣👌👍😎👍🇨🇦🇨🇦. I seen a tile guy do this so I thought I'd give it a try just to see and by god it worked pretty good actually didn't even need to really clean the pale. Hey, there you go you should try those two methods on a video one day🤔😏👌👍🇨🇦 just noooo pooping plz lmao....🤣🤣👍

I learned this first from tiling thinset that also sets up under water. First I scrape what I can into garbage and then use a bucket of water and brush to wash up. You can pour off the water once solids have settled. There's always a sizable solid mass at the bottom that would've been down somebody's drain.

I used Easy Sand 45 for the first time a few weeks ago, and I was a bit scared I was gonna screw it up. I had to prefill some wall to ceiling corner joints because the original installers didn't take the drywall to the edge on the ceiling, and left a 1/2 inch gap. Not sure if that's common practice, or not, but I prefilled so my tape had something to adhere to just in case. I'm glad you mentioned the P-trap drainage issue too because I had to poor the dirty water in the sink because it was either that, or dig a hole, and bury it in the backyard, lol.

I do swear by Durabond90 for prefill as a bed for taping mud to avoid tape shrinkage in the center. It’s also good for larger variations - occasionally I have had to do use a thinner drywall patch as it was the only thing available it help build a strong surface layer to apply a cover and skim coat. I think you should do another whole series on drywall stains and moisture meter and primers and paint to fix annoying temporary water leaks…

One more tip especially for us duffers: wear old clothes! I've been lazy and done some mudding - little spots, not whole walls - with street clothes on. Hey, if I get it on my clothes or shoes it will wash right out! Hot mud won't wash right out unless it is caught early. For the same reason, a cap of some sort is a great idea. Getting a blob of hot mud dried in our hair is less than ideal. Just sayin'.

I'm trying to fix 8'x11' painted wall, last owners seemed to have practiced texture on it and then paint peeled in places. I was going to scrape/sand, prime with zinsser 123, easy sand 45, then prime again and paint. Missing or wrong steps? I'm so lost even after watching so many videos.

I think I and a lot of other people had the misconception that hot mud reaches its 100% dry point faster, but it does not. It only stiffens up faster and the entire point behind that is so you can put another coat of mud on top of the hot mud sooner than you can the other kinds of mud. I originally thought that since it was setting up sooner then it would also be dry sooner and that you could sand it a lot sooner than you can other muds but thats not true. It's made so you can add another coat of mud on top of it sooner but when it comes to sanding it has to be 100% dry and it does not 100% dry faster than other muds. Its right at the same amount of time to completely dry as other mud types.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 8 ай бұрын
You are correct except there is one other major reason for it setting up besides being able to recoat it quickly. And that is because by setting up it stops the shrinkage. Drywall mud shrinks because of the evaporation of the water but since this sets up before it dries it stops the shrinkage. It probably shrinks less than 5% compared to about 35% for regular joint compound.
@morokeiboethia6749
@morokeiboethia6749 8 ай бұрын
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Wow I didnt realize it was that low of shrinkage (5%). Learn something new every day. As for the regular all purpose, that explains why so many times I come in the next day and the joints that I swore were complete are all showing the bulge of the tape again. I thought I was going blind or crazy but now that explains it. I'm really glad I've tried out different muds now b/c now i know the situations to use them in and that saves sooo much time and headache when you use the right mud for the occasion. And honestly I learned most of it right here on this channel! Merica!

I’ve a problem where the hot mud sets up way too quickly and reduce my working time tremendously. The bag states 20 minutes or so, but after just about 5 minutes, my hotmud is no longer in a working consistency. What am I doing weong? Am already using clean water, etc and mix it by hand using the instructions’ ratio.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 ай бұрын
Mix only until slightly smooth. If you try to mix till all the lumps are gone, you'll overmix and it sets up faster. Otherwise, not sure. Make sure you follow all guidelines in this video.
