Flying at the edge of space at four times the speed of sound, is a new Russian interceptor, armed with a frightly modern arsenal of weapons.
And it is perhaps the last chance for the legendary Mikoyan and Gurevich bureau to survive
Since the late 50s, Soviets and Russians have been developing interceptor aircraft to cover their vast territory and respond to any threats to their almost 60.000 km-long border.
Interceptors always had a special status in Soviet and Russian air forces, with legendary MiG-25 and its successor - MiG-31, being always somewhat of a mystery and a serious threat to the West.
But now, the time has come for the next generation of interceptors.a new jet projected to surpass in speed and a maximum altitude of even that of the legendary SR-71.
This is the story of the new Russian thunder, screaming across the horizon - The PAK-DP.

The difference though is that this project is actually going to materialize. It is not an optional fantasy for Russia, the country does need a successor to MiG-31 even though it gets upgrades. It will take years though: for example, F-35 was started in 1993 and by now, almost thirty years later, is still not combat approved by the military. But it will be approved eventually.

Everything starts with imagination. But the Russians have the knack of turning a fancied dream into a tangible reality. Especially today, when their jet fighters perform a lot better than their Western counterparts; and the West has no other sensible response than to treat Russian weapons with skepticism and disdain. Just like what they did in the Russia-Ukraine war with propaganda at first, and later, with a soft acceptance that all hope for Ukraine is lost.

Not really. The faster U fly the longer the turn radius. A 1/2 a dozen interceptors flying in at different directions (left & right & above & below & slightly behind of target) firing the fastest air 2 air 70's designed missiles at the rt angles & spaced at the rt timed intervals, 1 or more will hit. No matter how much juking the pilot trys, he's not agile enough. We found that out the hard way in war games with a friendly nato partner using slower 4th gen fighters. Our SR71 couldn't out fly geometry & physics. The problem the Mig 25 had with the SR71 was the Russians never could slow down enough 2 maneuver in the rt angle of attack. By the time they tried the SR71 was out of range. They even tried straight on attacks, the SR71 simply raised up or down, missiles flew rt pass. That's why the CIA & USAF stopped direct fly overs over hostile nations. We knew it was only a matter of time B4 hostile nations would stop using brute force & start using their brains. Hyper sonic planes R only good if they can evade detection B4 the enemy can react 2 shoot. Deliver their payload then try 2 get home with the bad guy knowing ur there. Hard 2 do now. Hyper sonic maneuverable low altitude nuclear cruise missiles is another story. That's the real threat now. PS - USAF shot down 1 of our dead satellites using a F15 back in the 80's.

Indeed, this is exactly the scenario for MiG-25/31/41. Its goal is to quickly jump into high altitude and intercept its targets that can, indeed, go from roughly one direction. Hence it does not need more than frontal and a bit of sideways stealth and it does not need super manoeuvrability. A totally different plane from anything else currently in use worldwide.
@pjduker05
@pjduker05 2 жыл бұрын
I would agree with you if this were a cold war scenario. But unfortunately it wouldn't work to well in a modern setting. The biggest reason being that their enemies won't come from a single direction. Frankly we never have. Look at D-day. That was a many pronged front with fake outs on distant beaches. Now that said, a nation like the USA would certainly have many assets in the air searching for Russian interceptors and SAMs. This means our new friend the Mig-41 isn't getting pinged from just the front. Furthermore he would be up against stealth fighters and bombers as well. So unless he activates his active radar he will have just as hard of a time hunting us. And of course as soon as he does that every air and naval asset will have his location and it'll be less than minutes before he's parachuting over the eastern coast of Russia.

Big engines, lots of speed, one big problem - doesn't looks to me like it has much fuel capacity. Not saying it's a bad plane, Russian have lots of good aircraft. But, if this plane does and has all these things, including an internal weapons bay, it has sacrificed fuel space. Speed isn't everything if you can go Mach 3.5+, but only might have a combat range of 2 to 3 hundred miles?
@jamesstreet228
@jamesstreet228 2 жыл бұрын
You would think they learned that lesson with the Mig25. It was fast but only in a straight line and at it's max speed the engine started eating itself. It could carry fuel OR weapons but not both at the same time because of it's weight. It was so heavy that it's range was 350 milesish and that's if they didn't kick in the afterburners. Basically a useless aircraft. We found all that out when Victor Belenko delivered one to Japan. He went to Japan because that's as far as he could get on a tank of Smirnoff potato juice. Even then he was down to the peelings when he landed.

Brian Shule mentioned it during his speaking tour days, while looking back at himself in it, inspired him to take what might have been the first selfie, from his personal camera on a 10 second timer looking back from his instrument panel during a training mission. As for the Mig they're going need to make some serious advances in engine technology, since both the 25 and 31 running balls out for maximum speed runs pretty much fubar the engines requiring immediate replacement. If that doesn't happen the next flight would be sketchy at best.

Be interesting to see how fast this thing can really go if it's ever built, and also for how long. The big thing about the SR-71 was not only its speed but how long it could maintain that speed for. The MiG 31 can only go over Mach 3 in very short bursts or it'll burn up its engines.

"Can only" ? While its true you find lots of claims that its limited to a mach 2.8 for use, honestly "can only" ? The thing sits out there on a runway, no hangar, you climb in turn the key and go, Its a daily flyer so to speak. The SR 71 is a one off specialty that costs god only knows how much, requires weeks of prep before every flight and weeks of service after every mission flown. The Mig is lucky if they paint more than once every 20 years. Its made of leadish like materials and they used a brick for its aerodynamic profile. The SR-71? well thats where I would say "can only" to me the Mig is ten times more impressive. That however I get is just tomato, tomato. It's also a curiousity of mine, of how fast the SR-71 could really go, in such overload, burst speed settings. There are pilot reports of Mach 3.5 in the SR-71, and that's the highest publically available speed data. Engineering analsys on the shock cones of the engines, i vaguely remember showed full retraction and losing thrust past a certain speed... Even so, the true top end is a vague question mark, still. Russia was much more boastful with the Mig-31. It'll be exciting to see how far they can push the new aircraft, honestly, anything past the high mach 2's all require similar feats of engine tech wizardry, in terms of novel engineering solutions, as the SR-71 has. It is more a question, as i understand it, of what speed range they tune it for. The SR-71 is a slide-rule designed plane, from... what now, 50+ years ago? Surely, computers can help us do better than just the 3.2 mach in bursts of the similarly, not hyper advanced computer design aided engine engineering techniques that exist in the MiG-31.

@@vinloy23 the PD variant. You mean the one that used ballistic missile engines that had to be rebuilt after each mach 2+ flight? Sure...they refined it alright. And yes this entirely rumor. Yes the Mig-25 was faster than F15s, and a good deal faster, but they did not have anywhere near the range or payload, their missiles were less efficient, their cannon was all but useless at those speeds, they certainly couldn't turn and bank with the F15s anyway, and they would have been swatted out of the skies by the far superior F15s. Of course some F15s would go down too so it wouldn't be a 100% victory. But furthermore it's absolutely dumb to even compare the two aircraft. The Mig-25 is an interceptor. She's not designed for long range attacks and air superiority. She's designed to be launched from nearly any unprepared air field and intercept incoming bombers. The F15 is an air superiority fighter, more like the Flanker. Her job is to patrol the skies and make sure that the enemy is grounded. Comparing the two planes is about as silly as comparing a tank to a helicopter.

Just a thought… the identical mig 25 and 31 had a difference in number by 6. Same goes for the mig 29 and 35. If it’s related to the foxhounds… shouldn’t it be a mig 37?

Mig-37 was planned in 90's as low RCS interceptor, always appearing as concept arts in military aviation books at that time but cancelled before it could even be built into prototype. The plan was to have Mig1.42 as multi-role stealth fighter while Mig-37 as stealth interceptor with F-19 style rounded edge fins & wings.

It is my understanding that the limiting factor of speed with the SR71 had more to do with keeping the plane held back in a zone where it wouldn't destroy itself from the stresses of flying at a velocity the airframe could reasonably manage to handle for a sustained amount of time... not too much because of the engines lacking the ability to push it faster. This same airframe limitation is also why they didn't try to build a carrier version SR71, they couldn't make it robust enough to land without worries... I would suspect, if the Soviets could develop a similar or better power plant as the SR71, then the top sustainable speed world probably also be limited by the abilities of the airframe... tricky problems pushing airplanes that fast, not as easy to do as a missle, and there are other factors the SR71 took advantage of that don't seem to be in the mix of the rendition of aircraft shown in this video... but who knows... and of course, good luck to building such an amazing plane! LOL

why would you even think of trying to land an SR-71 on a carrier flight deck... a plane that needs a parachute just to land in something like 2 miles of runway. Get out of here with thinking of landing it on a carrier.. there were never any ideas of putting something like that on the flight deck. Hell it's so heavy it can barely get off the ground and needs all of the runway at takeoff speed.
@scottturcotte1860

I have seen footage of them launching off a carrier. This presumably was just to see if it could be done, similar to seeing how the Hercules was also considered and tested for carrier landing. I also remember hearing someone discussing them looking into the possibility of what it would take to beef up the airframe enough to land an SR71 varient on a carrier, but this idea was scrapped as unfeasible... and the SR71 was serving quite adequately in it's normal capacity... this wasn't my idea, these were things that were actually done or considered for proposals.... the military loves to consider possibilities that sound good but aren't sound....

The new Mig may exist as a prototype--a prototype cgi program. The Y-12 could already reached closely to mach 4 in the mid-60s according to pilots on record here on KZfaq. Kelly Johnson said fuel was the limiting factor on the YF12, Y12, and SR71. But at full afterburner in dense cold air, mach 4 was possible for a short time until fuel was exhausted on the lighter YF12 which was heavier than the mig 25 and 31.Pilots hit 3500mph in the SR71 and faster in lighter Y12 which equals mach4

You have an interesting memory regarding US wars. Take Afghanistan for example. The USSR was in Afghanistan for less than ten years and lost something like 15k men with another 25-35k wounded. The US was there twice as long and only lost around 2.5k. Seems obvious who's army was more capable right? Your army has been in Ukraine for like 2 months and you've lost what 15-20k? Good job! It is kinda funny how the US thought that the MIG 25 was some sort of super fighter, when in reality all it could really do was go REAL fast and shoot down bombers and spy planes, because that is what it was built to do. Yet the US panicked and rushed to develop an all purpose fighter that could beat the image of the MIG 25 they had in their heads.

There's no way that Foxbat 2.0 is as fast as the MIG25 or the SR71. It's not about speed and power. It's about heat, it's also about using what little air exists at 100,000 ft. The PAK-DP just from it's current design wont meet or exceed Mach 3.2. The Fox bat did ONCE and broke part mid flight. The PAK-DP is a pipe dream, and useless in a Dog Fight where speeds rarely match Mach 2 (never mind the insane fuel consumption.)

Just 1 correction. MiG didn't develop anything not because it couldn't. It was because in the 90's, Russia couldn't afford to fund 2 design bureau. (Or more precisely - wouldn't. Gov/t officials would rather buy yachts and property abroad, rather than give money to develop some 'useless' planes.) So they have to choose between MiG and Skhoi. Obviously Su was chosen. MiG was idling for a long long time.
