This is a wonderful and helpful review. I just got fitted today at the PGA Superstore in Rockville, Maryland and the P790 came out number one. As it may help others, here are the details. I'm 81, have a 16-17 handicap, have played 60 years. Have used forged blades for years: Mizuno MP-67, Mizuno MP-33, and currently Chicago Classics, clubs designed by Bob Evans, formerly director of tour operations for McGregor golf, and forged in Taiwan, they are nearly identical to MP-33s. Always with stiff shafts, Aldila NV Green MLTi Pro, TT Dynamic Gold S300, and currently Precision Rifle Lite which are 120 grams. Love the feel and look of forged blades, but I no longer have the swing speed to get the distance I want from my forged blade 7 iron that has a 35.5 loft. Fifteen or twenty years ago it was my 150 yard club. Now I get a carry ranging from an embarrassing 123 to a recent max of 134. Ack. So I grudgingly began to study reviews of stronger lofted clubs like the P790. Today at my fitting I tried the following: (7 iron loft in parentheses) P790 (30.5), Ping i525 (30.5), Cobra forged Tec X (27), Mizuno JPX 923 HM Pro (28.5), Mizuno Pro 225 (30), Wilson D9 forged (30.5). Did not try the Rogue or T200 and don't like the look of either, they give me the impression they will fall apart and the plastic back on the T200 is awful. Each club had a KBS Tour Lite Regular (95 gram) shaft. Tried a few others but that one worked best. The fitter used Pro V1x RCT balls. In the end, the P790 came out a very clear winner and best for me. Regularly got carries of 143 to 147. Spin and descent angle a bit less than fitter wanted, but we were able to add an extra 800 rpm using a high spin ball like the Bridgestone Tour BXS. I expected a clicky feel and sound from the P790, but that was not the case. It felt and sounded really pleasing. So I agree totally with Sophie and hope this may be useful to others.

I have been playing with the Wilson D9 forged since July. I like the feel and the forgiveness of these irons. Way more consistent than my old apex pro’19s

Cobra has one thing that the others don't, right now I play speedzone one length because I needed the extra help. However I have got a lot better and I'm looking into the forged TEC in one length. One length just simplifies set up and swing

I tested the P790, Mizuno 225, and Titleist T200. Best looks, feel and numbers for me was the P790 which I bought.

I bought D9 Forged this winter from a shop that was closing down. I got them for half price :-) Can't wait for spring to arrive in Sweden. I guess they will be feeling better than my callaway x22 tour. I miss the feeling from my Mizuno TPZ in the 90th and hoping the D9 Forged will get me back to more feeling and including more forgiving than the TPZ.

Hi Sophie I have the Wilson D9’s, I absolutely love them, disappointing seeing them down the list but for me now days it’s about value for money for great clubs and I feel Wilson are streets ahead in that category. I do think you maybe a little biased 🤔🤣🤣

Clubs aside, more on that in a bit, what I want Sophie is your swing. It's a perfect rhythmical swing with a really nice turn or pivot on the lead leg that I want to copy as a model. I am 81, have played for 60 years, and have a 17 handicap. But a lot of men younger than me would do well to copy it, too.

Srixon ZX5 is a very strong contender here. Nice compact head with a lot of forgiveness and tech.

Sophie, I know you play the Ping i525 from watching your videos. I liked hitting the 7 iron when trying it out but a little concerned ordering these because when I look at the bounce on the PW it is a 13. My angle of attack is pretty neutral. I don’t take a lot of loft off of the club at delivery yet I’m a 5 handicap. What is your angle of attack? And do you notice hitting shots off the bottom of the club. Also like the Cobra Forged Tec. Low bounce but stronger lofted and lower spin. It’s hard finding the right specs to fit my game. Your opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Ric

I would be interested to see descent angle or total distance added to the distance chart to give a better idea of stopping power.

I can’t go past the 2021 TaylorMade P790 irons,I was fitted for these with the KBS tour lite stiff shafts 2 degree upright and 1 inch over standard and compared to my old set(callaway apex DCB with Nippon modus 3 tour 105 stiff shafts)I was getting 10+ metres more carry and total distance with ease and the dispersion was so much better

For me its the Mizuno Pro 225, not the longest but at least the spin a decent amount and you can stop them on the greens which is the point of irons! Best looking and feeling of the bunch IMHO

Hello, I'm a 10 handicap looking for new irons. I narrowed down to either TM P790 or Mizuno 223 or 225. And information or suggestions you have would be appreciated. I normally play + half inch, 2-up with stiff steel shafts. Thank You

P790, Mizuno Pro 225, Takomo 201. I have the 790 and love em a miss hit doesn't hurt you with the 790's

I have the 2019 T200's.. 4-GW, Tensei Red AMT graphite shafts, - 1/2 inch and 1 deg. flat. I love their feel/sound on "ON Center" hits BUT off center i get a loud/clacky sound BUT they're super forgiving ! especially with all the Tungsten in the heel & toe that you cant see. The short irons look terrific, almost like a blade at address with a thin top line. The main reason why they're still in my bag is their forgiveness is unreal. I've hit some off the toe (outside the grooves) and i barely lose any distance. The other reason why they're still in my bag is cost, I paid nearly $1,250 for these irons as "used" set from 2ndSwing in Delaware off the rack. They looked like they were never even hit once. UPDATE: in December 2022 I custom ordered T100s's 6 iron to 48 deg wedge thru 2ndSwing DE, same specs as T200’s. Heads were on back order, clubs arrived in mid February. Feel/sound are impressive. And forgiveness too w Tungsten in the heel/toe. I’ll be keeping these irons for several years until the grooves wear out !

Got some 5 to AP in P790 and MG3 wedges in the bag. Changed from AP2 - AP3 and Volkie wedges this spring, and I love them. They feel a lot better than the Titleist.

I have played rouge St pro for around 8 months now, do like them, but I don't love them. I play of about 8 and these are plenty long and nice feeling. I wish I had tried the mizuno 225 though!

I tested many of these too on the course but ended up with the pxg gen 5s that outshone all of these for me - in terms of forged feel, right dispersion especially in the scoring clubs and great looks.

for me they tick ever box except looks. most PXG clubs look like an 8 year old designed them. some even have skulls on them...

@@maxibonkiswa yes clubs are so personal especially in looks and even feel and sound. I used to previously game the apex pro but for example did not like the clicky sound. Also used to game pings but never liked the notch. On the other hand liked the mizuno jpx’s. Performance wise the pxg have been the most consistent for me. Never took to the p790s though liked the p770s and p7mc. Goes to show that all clubs these days are very good - essentially difference may be the forgiveness on off centre hits and thus especially north south drop off.

I tried everything in this category early this year when trying out clubs (except the P790 - T-M was so back-ordered at that time, it would have been 3 months+). Finalists were Mizuno Pro 225, Cobra Forged Tech and Wilson D9 Forged. I picked the Wilson. They are as soft as the Mizuno and as long as the Cobra. Also, they had the tightest dispersion. I have played with them this year and LOVE them. And I think they look great in the bag, so I disagree with you putting them last in looks - just because you dislike a shiny finish. I ordered the Wilson's with a Recoil 460 ESX F3 (regular) shaft. I'm 72 and my swing weight came in between C8-C9 on these. Very easy to swing and I'm getting 150 yards with my 7 iron. And BONUS - they were by far the least expensive on the list! And Thank You for your great review of the Wilson's early this year that made me really want to try them.

For me it’s the Pings. Particularly how easily their longer irons are to hit. The 225s are very penal on mishits, the cobras launch too low and don’t spin enough (same for Wilson) and the p790s still famous for those rocket balls that totally fly the green. T200s are fine but just sound and look terrible IMO same goes for Rogue. Pings win this easily. Would’ve liked to have seen Srixon in here.

Where is the best price / performance club the Srixon ZX5 ? Thats by far my favourite iron manufacturer. I haven't tested the new P790 but the earlier model is the worst in this category I have tried. Very inconsistent, you get some crazy long shots and feel is also very average. Really surprised it won here, wow.

Wait....this is a general test. You have to look at the type of player your. I personally am a lower ball hitting player and the T200 irons helped me with higher shots with more spin. Got fit for mine and tried 4 of these . T200 were the best for me ,P790 was second but the shot dispersion was larger and less stopping power into the green. Only complaint I have is the plastic cover on the T200's.

I'm playing the Cobra Forged tec. Do the P790s still have the occasional jumper? Or do all player's distance irons have the occasional jumper?

I just got fitted for irons and went the the Forged Tec. The pro that did the fitting said he's noticed the P790's have inconsistent "hot spots" on the face of the irons. He has not noticed this with the Forged Tec.

Clearly a lot of bias in this video. 790 are good and probably deserve to win, but for example rogue st pros are $949 (second cheapest) and yet you still ranked them 6th in the price category below the Mizuno $1400. How does this work

playing the cobra forged tec copper irons......had a choice between the 790's or the forged tec...the forged tec seem not give any flyers like the 790's at the top end of my bag.......both exceptional clubs in my opinion and it is only my opinion the forged tec just pip the 790's both on price and feel........

Sub 70 699 will perform exceptionally well in this category. Great addition to the Players Distance iron offering at a very good price.

Problem with some of these distance iron offerings is that the lofts are so ridiculously strong that you are actually robbed of carry distance with the long irons and too long and short of stopping power with the short irons. Unfortunately they rarely give you anything other than a 7 iron for a test in the demo days or even in fitting sessions.

Looks are subjective and should not be given any weight from only you judging. That would of put the Wilson D9 Forged at the top and removed the Taylormade from winning. So personal preference with looks should in NO way have an effect on the winner. You said they all look gorgeous too.

No offence but reviewing clubs' performance off a mat into a net on flight scope is next to useless when trying to find a club to use in the course. Golf mats cover lots of flaws and don't give you a real indication of how they will play on course. You don't play golf off mats, golfers shouldn't buy clubs based on in store hitting off mats. Good review for looks and value, but performance should be decided on course.
