Fastest Lego Technic car powered by BuWizz - speed record breaker over 40 km/h

I spent several weeks creating, improving and testing this Lego Technic speed record breaker car. The basic idea was to use 2 BuWizz units, 4 buggy motors and 4 Technic motorcycle wheels and to add only the minimal amount of components to create the lightest and fastest BuWizz powered Lego Technic car. It had to be solid enough to survive all the crashes during the tests and record breaking attempts. The aim was to go faster than 40 km/h.
I had several tests at various locations until I found a proper track and the final configuration of the car was created. During this time a lot of parts had to be replaced as the axles were bent after a couple of runs.
The car does not have a conventional steering to reduce weight. For the speed runs only small adjustments are needed, so the direction of the car is controlled by the speed difference of the wheels - there are two control sliders on the phone for each side of the vehicle.
The speed was measured with the on-board GPS unit. The car was controlled mostly with my phone, but for the fastest run I was using an iPad (longer range). Even like this at full power the car ran out of range very quickly.
I think it would be possible to go even faster with this car, but that would require a completely flat surface and a chase vehicle to ensure the controller stays in range. Maybe another time ;)
BuWizz can be purchased at buwizz.com/?ref=5

I totally feel your R&D sweat and tears. I tried to build a pullback car for my 2-yr-old. It has to sprint like cat and sturdy as a rhino (so they don't destroy it). I find 1 pullback motor too limited, so I try to put 2 into 1 car.... then, the torque is too high at release, and most of the energy is lost. So, i start to add tires...... The process of R&D is very underappreciated for most viewers. Technic builds are not easy to tweak, and sturdy Technic builds are even worse. Congrats on this milestone project. Let's add more wheels for traction and hit 50!!

Thanks! You're totally right, the months spent to create the car is not really visible in such video. I'm planning to do an upgraded version in the future but the key element is to find the proper track and that's still missing.

Thanks! Not sure if the size increase would give a speed increase as well since the weight to move would be significantly higher as well.
@hntrains2
@hntrains2 4 жыл бұрын
@@RacingBrick, I was actually considering a lower speed exactly because of the added weight. But I would also expect increased adherence and maneuverability, and that I would easily trade for a decrease in speed. How about if L motors were used? How would that be reflected in the vehicle's speed?
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick 4 жыл бұрын
@@hntrains2 L motors would make it significantly slower. This whole construction was built to achieve the highest speed possible with 4 buggy motors, so if you would like to create something that is bigger and has better maneuverability then you'll probably need a fundamentally different approach.

@@RacingBrick I think lego will never do that unfortunately. They seem more concerned about making the stuff more idiot proof than giving anything near as powerful as the RC motors... Also we will never have micro motors like in the past. The only good side is that the app controlled stuff will certainly add possibilities with the new components depending of if lego makes that stuff modular...
@captaincamera501
@captaincamera501 5 жыл бұрын
This might add a lot of complexity but I think it could work. Add a gear box that you can switch the gears, there are a lot of different designs on the KZfaq. This will allow you to have a very high gear ratio increasing speed and than you can have a very low one that give lots of torque and then have an in-between. This set up should allow you to go faster, you start on a low gear and work your way up the different gears until you reach the highest one. This could increase weight so if you want this to work you might need to try to remove even more weight, I don’t know if weight will play a big factor but it’s still worth it. I’m not one hundred percent sure but hopefully it works!
@RacingBrick

That would be very true actually, it’s a shame that LEGO doesn’t make some sort of signal booster. This video has inspired me to go out and accept the challenge of making one that can go this fast! @RacingBrick
